The George W Bush Administration has blasted into the White House proclaiming a national energy crisis which no one except Mr Bush and Mr Cheney, both former energy company executives, can detect. California''s blackouts seem more the result of profiteering by energy companies and their fellow travellers in the California legislature than of a national problem. Yet the White House sees a crisis which either does not exist or they are inventing one to pump up the already substantial revenues of their past, present and probably future buddies in the energy business. The book presents analyses which substantiate the fact that energy policies have been around for sometime and perhaps deserve a more serious response than ham-handed profit taking.

Medicare is a nation-wide health insurance programme for the aged and certain disabled persons. Over its 32 year history, it has provided important protection for millions of Americans. However, the programme is now facing a number of problems. The first and most pressing concern is whether Medicare''s financing mechanism will be able to sustain it in the long run. Many people are also concerned that the programme''s structure, which in large measure reflects both the health care delivery system as well as political considerations in effect at the time of enactment, has failed to keep pace with the changes in the health care system as a whole. A related concern is whether the programme''s benefit structure adequately responds to the health care need of today''s aged and disabled populations. This book addresses these and other related issues.

This book shows that some unexplained cosmological and electrodynamic phenomena may be treated and understood in the geometrically based framework of Weyl and Dirac. After a short introductory chapter, Chapters 2 and 3 consider the Weyl-Dirac space-time as a geometric basis appropriate for building up relativistic theories. In the following chapter the Weyl-Dirac unified theory of gravitation and eletromagnetism, as well as its consequences, are discussed. Chapter 5 presents a modified version of the original Weyl-Dirac theory. In Chapter 6 the Weyl-Dirac theory enriched by Rosen''s approach is considered as a source of geometrically based dark matter. Chapter 7 gives an integrable version of Weyl-Dirac theory, in which matter is created by geometry. In Chapter 8 an outlook of the Weyl-Dirac framework is given and its applicability to extended theories of electromagnetism, and cosmology is discussed.

This annotated bibliography presents 643 entries which deal with dangerous issue.

  • - Bridges to Belief
    av R Bruce Ward
    899

This book concerns the relationship of science/technology and human values. We live in a highly complex technical age, but very little correspondence exists between technology and the body of beliefs and customs that make up the culture. Moreover, those beliefs and customs are themselves under increasing stress in a society characterised by extreme volatility. The book explores a new set of attitudes, values and beliefs which relate to the reality of our times. It is a theme that embodies the cultural ideal of the people. Science and technology is proposed as that connection. It is there and in the matrix of the human condition that this book searches out and explores bridges of understanding.

Written for the millions of science teachers, students and the public who want evidence of their views. Society must make important choices in health and medicine, the environment, energy sources, the courts and in risk and safety. These issues and many other problems facing us require knowledge of science for their solution. Polls show that nearly half of the US population believes the myths, superstition and paranormal delivered by TV and the press. Despite the great advances of science in the 20th century, pseudo-science and anti-science are still around, even growing in some of the greatest universities and institutions in the land.

This book is a compilation of CRS reports on the Small Business Administrations (SBAs) Small Business Investment Company (SBIC). The opening report discusses the programs statistics, structure and operations. Other SBA programs are described later, some of which include disaster assistance, contracting programs and capital investment programs. A program is also discussed which seeks to aid small businesses owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. This collection examines the SBAs budget as well as recent developments and future trends. Economic research is examined to identify which business models create the most jobs and then analyzed for possible implications for Congress. The book concludes by discussing bills introduced to amend the Small Business Lending Fund.

This book is a compilation of CRS reports on abortion in the United States. The first chapter discusses the way legislation seeking to limit/ban abortions in midpregnancy has brought to attention the number of women choosing to have such procedures. The second report focuses on April 2018 in Mississippi, when the enforcement of a law prohibiting abortion on fetuses with a gestational age of more than 15 weeks was halted by a federal court. This prohibition is of particular interest to congress because of the early gestational age. The third chapter discusses those policies which restrict the United States funding of abortion and family planning activities abroad, which has become a significant issue in foreign assistance. Later, the court''s rulings since Roe and Doe are examined in the fourth chapter in the context of the governmental actions designed to nullify or limit their effect(s). In the fifth report, the authors discuss recently renewed questions concerning to what extent the government may impose abortion restrictions on aliens. The concluding chapter aims to address whether the constitutional right to abortion applies to an unaccompanied alien minor who is apprehended at the border.

  • - Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment
    av Irvin Mendez

Acute myeloid leukemia is the most common adult acute leukemia, but its etiology in individual patients is poorly understood. An increased risk of acute myeloid leukemia may be inherited (through congenital hematologic diseases and syndromes or germline disorders) or be acquired due to a lifetime of exposure to environmental or chemical agents, or genotoxic stress. In this collection, the authors explore risk factors for acute myeloid leukemia, newer epidemiologic studies on the connections between these risks and clinical phenotypes and outcomes of the disease. The subsequent chapter evaluates different prognostic factors and stratifications of risk that have been published in the attempt to assess the influence of acute myeloid leukemia progression on the overall survival of myelodysplastic syndromes patients, evaluating them in a population-based registry. Many acute myeloid leukemia patients cannot tolerate standard chemotherapy due to its high toxicity. A milder therapy for acute myeloid leukemia has long been sought after, and until now the only successful clinical application has been all-trans-retinoic acid-based therapy for just one subtype of acute myeloid leukemia, acute promyelocytic leukaemia. The concluding chapter aims to address other therapeutic candidates.
