I am a proud father of three, dismayed by the fact I have now endured my second divorce. It's tough when there is someone in front of you reminding you of every flaw and failure, and not just yours, but the flaws and failures of your gender, and the ones you are bound to demonstrate in the future. Is that how everyone feels about me?I wrote a book once. College anecdotes, good times, ending on a high note. How did it go so wrong? I knew she was damaged, a troubled past, walls of defense, maybe a personality disorder or three, and injured animals fight to the death if they feel threatened. But I could help that, right? Review everything. This might hurt a bit. Maybe I should have pursued further the dozen or so interests that came before her. Maybe I should ask a few. Maybe I should look back at the closest friends from those times, too, as well as ones lost. This may not hurt quite as bad, except it might be worse. This book covers my introspective journey of self-analysis. I try to figure out for myself, how looking over the side of a bridge with a stroller at a couple of ducks links itself with a group of friends I have been lucky to have for most of my adult life as well as to a girl from a long time ago that I never even kissed. Eventually, there may be a small pearl of wisdom or two, along with some graphic sarcasm, and descriptions and stories that had me laughing as I typed, proving again that laughter is still the best medicine.

At times, it might make you want to hug me or punch me in the face. It should get people who think they know me to better understand me. A literary work that is both autobiographical and biographical in nature. It recounts the Jackson family's ancestry to the ninth generation and the lives of fourteen siblings raised in a two-parent household. It relives the time from a life of farming that never yielded any financial benefits to a move to the North.

  • - Retake Control of Your Life
    av Dr Terry Jones
    255,-

What if you could train your mind to see all the good around you? What if I told you that happiness is a matter of perspective? Many people seem to think inner peace is not a byproduct of struggle but rather a switch to flip then-voila, you're happy. Or they think happiness is only as good as their next relationship. Why? My name is Dr. Terry Jones and I believe the sooner we accept that happiness comes from within us, the sooner we can discover our own Power Tools that will help bring us joy. My goal writing Culture of One is to simply help you maintain a life of personal power and purpose, of internal peace and (yes) happiness. This book will introduce you the tools you need to be happy (no matter your circumstances), then show you how to find them within yourself. Once you become your own Culture of One, you will be empowered to use your own willpower to be the most aware, empathetic, and self-sufficient person you can be. This is not another new age philosophy, it's a pragmatic, psychology-based mind-set that lives inside all of us. Because we all have the choice to be happy every moment of our lives, we really do. Let me show you how.

  • - American Leaders in Desperate Times
    av Joel Schlesinger
    279,-

Scholars have concluded that leadership is among the most studied of phenomena yet the least understood. This inability to precisely define leadership recalls Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's struggles to define pornography: "I shall not...attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that... But I know it when I see it." Similarly, when it comes to leadership, we know it when we see it. This book explores the leadership performance of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Robert E. Lee, Katharine Graham, and Franklin D. Roosevelt at desperate moments in American history. A study of their leadership styles over a period of two centuries suggests that today's leaders might have something to gain from a back-looking perspective on this critical subject. Although this book is ostensibly about the five leaders, ultimately their performance provides a lens for the whole of the topic of leadership past and, especially, present. While leaders seem to have the liberty to behave as they like, their freedom is bound by organizational objectives, organizational cultures that may be difficult to change, and the diverse natures of their workforce. Leadership behavior, shaped by the spirit of the times, evolves; it is about the inextricable relationships-the inseparability-among leaders, followers, and situations within organizations and societies as they respond to the inevitable urgencies for change. The leaders in this book operated in environments over which they often had little control; a store of contextual factors substantially influence and restrain a leader's freedom of action. Our school-days history classes often paint leaders as two-dimensional cardboard cutouts. This book explores the crucial impact of context and just how effectively the leaders in this book led at severe, intense, transformative-desperate-moments in our history; it attempts to put weight and texture on the cardboard cutouts. To do so, this book humbly puts forward a leadership context framework to define the contextual factors that determine a leader's prerogatives. It is about "leading snowflakes." Because no two organizations and their contexts, like snowflakes, are ever alike, leaders must consistently adapt to new and constantly evolving internal and external circumstances. This book suggests that there is a holistic unity to leadership and that the four leadership qualities of status, esteem, technical competence, and organizational leadership skills, always present in some measure, help leaders motivate followers. The proper mix of these four qualities may depend on the nature of the followers and the situations faced. The newly elected Lincoln arrived in the nation's capital with low status and esteem; but his savvy technical competence and strong organizational leadership skills brought success. Robert E. Lee possessed high esteem, status, and technical competence; at Gettysburg, his inability to exercise sound organizational leadership skills led to his organization's failure.

  • - Advent Meditations Four Weeks of Spiritual Meditation and Reflection
av Isaac N, II Hudson & Mary A Hudson
    169,-

The season of Advent brings a stir of excitement in the air. The season has changed, the scenery is festive, and somehow hope has made its journey through hopelessness and transformation has emerged! It is a season that even those that are limited in their resources find a way to lift the spirits of others through their giving. It is a time to celebrate Jesus. A time to let Christ arise! It is a unique evangelistic opportunity for practitioners of faith to remind and be reminded that Jesus is the reason for the season. Advent is a season observed in many Western Christian churches, a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. This brief daily meditation during the four weeks of advent are intended to help us to remain focused as we reflect on our relationship with Jesus, a time for us to reflect on what his birth means to us, and an opportunity time and time again to experience his birth in us. Advent is a time for us to declare, "I am alive, I am alive, I am alive in Jesus." I declare that I am alive because the Christ of God is born in me! It is our prayer that these meditations will give you a new determination to live in the transforming power of Jesus Christ our Lord.
