This book is a celebration of lizard-hood. It salutes a diversity of form and function unparalleled among terrestrial vertebrates, from apex predators capable of swallowing goats to limbless subterranean insectivores. In equal measure they thrive in a tropical paradise, a waterless terrain so bleak one wonders how anything survives, and the human domain, including domestic gardens and the ruins of past civilizations The book ventures into how lizards exploit those disparate places, and author and photographer Steve Wilson's attempts to document them around the world. This book is born from journeys of discovery by the author. Quests for lizards and other reptiles have taken him to some of the world's extraordinary biodiversity hot-spots in Borneo, Madagascar, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands. He has also crisscrossed his native Australia many times, searching for lizards in deserts, rainforests and even peoples' back yards. From mighty Komodo Dragons in Indonesia to tiny anoles in the Americas, every lizard has a tale to tell, making this a must-read title for anyone who is passionate about reptiles or about wildlife in general.

More than 50 years in the making, Australian Falcons is a beautifully illustrated volume of personal observations, interesting encounters with raptors, and detailed descriptions of behaviour that will inform and delight the reader. The late great Peter Slater needs no introduction as one of Australia's finest natural history artists, photographers and authors over a period of decades, with the renowned The Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds among his many works. For this book Peter teamed up with the equally talented and award-winning artist Sally Elmer to produce the ultimate volume on this family of scythe-winged birds of prey, including the Peregrine Falcon, which has been recorded reaching speeds of more than 300 kilometres per hour. Other chapters cover Australia's other five falcon species: Nankeen Kestrel, Brown Falcon, Australian Hobby, Grey Falcon and Black Falcon. Engaging text explains all about the lives of these enigmatic birds, while stunning photography and artworks provide a window into the hidden world of these raptors, which rarely venture close to people but capture our imaginations with their dashing flight and remarkable aerial feats.

Or, amazingly, that the venomous blue-ringed octopus has a beak it its mouth just like your pet budgie, only with a toxic saliva sting! Or that half the planet's oxygen, which is essential for our survival, is derived from the likes of macro algae in the world's oceans? Gavin Farmer looks at the history of car manufacturing and assembly in Australia in 'Cars of the 60s'. Following the boom times of the fifties, the sixties became a decade of consolidation on the one hand and a series of challenges on the other, some economic and some political. It marked the beginning of a very real challenge from Ford on GM-Holden as well as from Chrysler and several Japanese manufacturers who had quietly entered the Australian market. The decade began with a Federal Government credit squeeze which created difficult times for the whole industry. The sixties saw the beginnings of Australia's power wars with the likes of the Ford Falcon GT sedan, Holden Monaro GTS coupe, and the Chrysler Pacer sedan. The big story in Australia in the sixties was the emergence of the compact class of car epitomised by the Holden Torana that evolved out of the dull Vauxhall Viva. By 1968 it had been developed by Australian engineers into a compact six-cylinder car that opened a new market segment missed by its rivals; Ford entered the small car market with a dual attack. It was also in the Sixties when the Japanese manufacturers really established a foothold in Australia. In the Sixties Australia lost its innocence and life changed in every way; the "good ol' days" as they were remembered were gone. Established companies were floundering and failing as they were left behind in the dash to modernise and re-equip old factories-the Germans and the Japanese all had brand new factories full of the latest technology equipment that meant parts could be made faster and cheaper-and so the old order rather quickly changed.
