Islam and civilization is a realistic and living issue which relates not only to the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the teachings of Islam, but also to the reality of life itself. The present and future of mankind and the historic role played by the Muslims in the development ofculture and building up a flourishing civilization. This is a topic important enough to receive the attention of an academic body instead of being given thought by a single individual. In its depth and scope it can compare with any standard subject of thought pertaining to life of man. It covers an immense area in time and space, from the first century of Islamic era to this day and from one corner of the world to the other, In its immanence, it encompasses from creed to morals and behaviour, individual as well as social, and linked with diverse phenomena of life like law, politics, international relations. arts. letters, poetics, architecture, cultural refinement etc. It is well-nigh impossible to enumerate the influence exerted by Islam in different fields and on different nations and countries. Only an attempt can be made to describe these in a few spheres where they have played a conspicuous role in the reformation, guidance and progress of humanity towards a better and healthier existence in contradistinction to the norms adopted normally by the Muslims during the period of their decadence. These universal gifts of Islam have been presented in this study under ten headings. 1.Clear and distinct faith in the Oneness of God. 2.Concept of human unity and equality. 3.Proclamation of human dignity. 4.Raising the position of women and restoration of rights.5.Infusing hope and confidence in man. 6.Unification of spirit and matter : truce between the two. 7.Alliance between religion and knowledge. 8.Intellectual pursuit in religious matters.9.Promotion of morality and justice : a duty enjoined on Muslims. 10. Universal creed and culture.

Islam means to submit one's will to God, to surrender one's ego and in all humility accept God's word, The Quran, as a guide with which to lead one's life. The beautiful miracle that transpires, thereafter, is that one begins to feel freer and more empowered by sacrificing the self in service to God's wisdom.Every aspect of the religion of over one-and-a-half billion individuals is divinely designed to absolute perfection. It imbues balance within one's life and fosters harmony both within oneself and in one's associations with others. To an outsider, however, Islam is still a mystery and for others it is too complicated to get one's head around let alone to practice it judiciously. Which is where this wondrous book comes in. Written by the great scholar of Islam, Sayyed Abu Hasan Ali Nadwi, it presents the beautiful religion in the most simple way making it thoroughly accessible to the layperson. Readers of this superb book will soon discover the gift of Ali Nadwi, which was to present Islam in a thorough but simple manner. His careful selection of words and terms invites the seekers of knowledge and wisdom to know more while answering their most burning questions.Among the secrets of Islam, the most important one is approaching The Quran as it only truly benefits those who approach it in the spirit of submission and love. And when learned and practised correctly, Islam changes one's life both inwardly and outwardly so then one lives to enter paradise among the righteous.

The book is a collection of my speeches and articles relating to the biography of the holy prophet. Some divergence was inevitable since these were delivered or written at different times and for different occasions. But there is unity in the diversity, for whatever has been said in them is inspired by the same idea and sentiment. Their contents revolve around a single personality, that of the Prophet Mohammad. They appertain solely to his life and teachings, his contribution to civilization and his gifts to humanity. The underlying aim, too, is nothing but to produce in the minds a living awareness of his greatness and arouse the feelings of love and deep devotion for him in the hearts. Hence, it is hoped that no confusion or tiresome repetition will be felt in these pages despite the dissimilarity or variation of titles and modes of expression. Most of these speeches or articles were, first, written in Arabic and then translated into Urdu either by myself or friends and published in various journals. For a long time, I had felt that the attachment of a large number of Education Men from the Arab countries, particularly those who had come under the influence of Arab nationalism, to the sacred Prophet who was the springhead of all their felicity and good fortune and to whom they were indebted for success and honour in both the worlds was weakening and getting reduced to soulless formality. The warmth and earnestness of love had gone out of it, although it was distinctly set forth that the love of the Prophet should be stronger than the love one had for one's dearest relatives of worldly possessions.Due to these considerations, I decided to bring out a collection of these speeches and writings, which had proved beneficial and were widely acclaimed in the literary circles of the Arab world. - Syed Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi

The author acknowledges the great services rendered to Islam by Maulana Saiyid Abul 'Ala Maududi in molding the thinking of modern educated classes and restoring in them the confidence in Islamic values and thought as well as rescuing them from the sense of inferiority or defeatism. In his view, this was a sterling work performed by Maulana Maududi which must be acknowledged and for which the latter was rightly bestowed the title of 'Spokesman of Islam' by many a man of letters. The author, however, deprecates that Maulana Maududi, unfortunately, took up the task of modernizing Islamic thinking and started reorientation of Islamic metaphysics through interpretation of certain definitive terminological concepts of Islam in his famous work titled the 'Four Basic Quranic Terms'. In Maulana Maudidi's view these terms assumed, during the course of centuries, meanings different from those understood at the time of the descent of the Quran with the result that , barring a limited period, they came to be applied in a very narrow and ambiguous sense and obscured the real spirit of more than three fourth of the Quran. The author discusses in this book how the interpretation and emphasis on certain aspects of these terminological concepts by Maulana Maududi have led to a new type of exegesis of the Quran and Islam which has a political coloring and revolves around the 'Kingdom of God' and 'Sovereignty of God' , and reduces the purpose of revelation of the Quran to the establishment of an 'Islamic State'. He fears that the new generation influenced by such ideas and 'researches' would not be prepared to accept any other disposition and a new religious temper would be developed which will have nothing to do with the spirit that was generated by the company and guidance of the holy Prophet. Devoid of any personal prejudice or objective to serve any personal end, this study of the interpretation of certain Quranic concepts by one for whom the author has greatest regard, has been undertaken with scholarly detachment for upholding what the author considers to be right and essential for the Ummah.
