  • - Commentaries on Selected Themes
    av Kayode Samuel

This is a collection of essays on a remarkable and turbulent period in the political history of Nigeria. Although written between 1999 and 2003, the focus of these essays reached far behind that period to the crises of the annulment of the June 12 1993 Presidential elections and its aftermath. The annulment marked a defining moment whose impact still haunts Nigeria's democratic experiment to date. The essays seek to offer both the general reader and professional an insight onto the issues, currents and trends that defined this watershed decade and its sequel, of which the current political dispensation is a part.

In the European scamble for Africa towards the end of the 19th century, Britain declared itself for the Oil Rivers Protectorate to gain monopoly of the palm oil trade in what is now part of the land it put together as a country. Later it formed the first Federation of Nigeria with the former Royal Niger Company as its principle commercial operator, and the indigenous people of tha area, the Niger Delta, the suppliers of raw materials that Britian needed for its factories. The author is one of Africa's foremost poets. Drawing upon offcial documents and the oral tradition he presents a powerful panorama of the players in the original drama of the creation of Nigeria.

This anthology of essays brings together original critical comments on Nigerian literatures written in the 1970s and 1980s. It is a celebration of Nigeria's contribution to the world's heritage of letters. The twenty-three essays in it explore the fundamental role of the intelligentsia in defining and describing the nation state in space and time. The contributions represent some of the best and most articulate assessments of Nigeria's literary discourses in their pre-colonial and colonial phases. The various ideological reflections in the essays reveal significant details about the intellectual and imaginative processes that have gone into the shaping of Nigeria over the centuries. The diversity of themes examined, the historical epochs covered and the geo-political spread of the contributors add to the uniqueness of the volume. Chinua Achebe, J.P. Clarke, Femi Osofisan and Kole Omotoso are amoung the 23 contributors included.

An Outline of Islamic Jurisprudence is a salient effort at addressing the dearth of materials in the English language in the somewhat complex subject matter of classical jurisprudence. It highlights the uniqueness of Islamic jurisprudence as a developed system because of its exactitude in terms of meaning, province and scope. The book serves as a handy introductory text on the basic principles of Islamic jurisprudence for judges, lawyers, academicians, especially law lecturers, students of law specialising in Islamic law, and the general public.Dedication - Acknowledgements - Preface - Glossary- Chapter 1 Introduction to Islamic jurisprudence [Preamble; Definition of Fiqh; Definition of Usul; Definition of Usul al-Fiqh]; Chapter 2: Shari'ah - Islamic law [Definition of Islamic Law; Elements (Arkan) of Islamic Law]; Chapter 3: Obligations and duties [Introduction; Obligations created by the Hukm (rule of law); Duties created by the Hukm (rule of law); Chapter 4: Declaratory rule (Hukm Wad'i)[Classification of declaratory rule]; Chapter 5: Legal capacity (Ahliyyah)[Introduction ; Definition of Ahliyyah; Types of Ahliyyah; Classification of legal capacity; Factors affecting complete legal capacity]; Chapter 6: Right - Haqq [Introduction; Classification of rights; Classification of rights in Islamic criminal law]; Chapter 7: The sources of Islamic law [Introduction; Definition; The classification of the sources; The order of the sources]; Chapter 8: The primary sources [Introduction; Holy Qur'an; Compilation of the Holy Qur'an; The difference in the two compilations; Holy Qur'an as the primary source; Ijma - consensus of opinion]; Chapter 9: The secondary sources [Introduction; Qiyas - analogical deduction; Istihsab - juristic equity or preference; Maslahah Mursalah or Istislah - considerations of public interest or extended analogy; Istishab - presumption of continuity; Urf - custom; Sadd al-Dhara'i - blocking the means]; Chapter 10: Ijtihad [Introduction; Authority for the exercise Ijtihad; Types of Ijtihad; Taqlid]; Bibliography; IndexDr Yahaya Y. This is a study of the principal aspects of the Udje tradition Á poetry, dance and music Á of the Udu and Aghievwen divisions of the Urhobo of Delta State, Nigeria. It defines the territorial scope of the study, surveys Udu and Ughievwen social history, and situates Udje within the context of the Urhobo song-poetry tradition; reviews the theoretical perspectives on the practice of satire in the Udje dance-songs, and considers the conceptual views of some Udje practitioners of Udje, both as a literary art and as a medium for social reform; and attempts to classify and describe Udje songs. The concluding chapters consider the decline of the Udje tradition and the satirical song-poetry tradition in Urhobo, reviewing how post 1960s trends are likely to affect the artistic integrity of Udje in the future.

The ten monographs in this series are devoted to a critical review of the regime of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babagandi, arguably the most controversial military dictator in Nigeria's political development and whose political and socio-economic 'engineering' efforts in the period 1985-1993 left everyone and the economy gasping and groping for a direction. In all, Malthouse Monographs for Africa (MAMA) Numbers 1-10 represent the most serious attempt yet at unravelling all that took place in Nigeria in that period, and should thus, hopefully, generate further exchange of views and discussions. The monographs contained in this volume are: Corruption and Corrupt Practice: Institutionalization and Legitimation under the Babangida Administration; The Military and Democracy in Nigeria: The Political Bureau Report; Politics of the Annulment of June 12 Presidential Election in Nigeria.
