In Goslar, Hilde meets her husband, Karl, a young officer in the German Army. When he joins the 7th Panzer Brigade led by General Erwin Rommel at the beginning of World War II, Hilde is left to bring up their children in war-torn Germany. Hilde's story is based on facts and is told here by her youngest daughter, Elisabeth.

Αναγκαζόταν να κοιμάται τα τελευταία χρόνια κλείνοντας όσο μπορούσε περισσότερο τ' αυτιά του. Το περιβάλλον στο δωμάτιό του ήταν γεμάτο με οθόνες που ούτε λίγο ούτε πολύ, έλεγχαν σχεδόν τα πάντα. Η πόρτα σιδερένια, με επένδυση, ήταν κατάλληλη για να ελέγχει τις επικίνδυνες ακτινοβολίες. Κι αυτά που το επίπλωναν δεν ήταν καινούργια. Ήταν εμφανές πως ό,τι αποτελούσε τον εξοπλισμό του, είχε συμπληρωθεί απ' αυτά που κατά καιρούς βρισκόντουσαν πεταμένα στους δρόμους. Η οικολογική καταστροφή δεν ήταν απλά τεράστια, ήταν ολοκληρωτική. Ο άνθρωπος με τις πράξεις του κατάφερε να εξαφανίσει την πανίδα και την χλωρίδα και για να επιβιώσει να ζητήσει καταφύγιο σε λιγοστές πόλεις τέρατα, που απλά επέτρεπαν στους κατοίκους της να ζουν κάτω από έναν μαγνητικό θόλο προστασίας. Η λύση όμως, αν και με λιγοστές πιθανότητες επιτυχίας, κρυβόταν στο ΑΒΑΤΟ ένα μυστικό πρότζεκτ που έτρεχαν δυο υπάρξεις χωρίς ταυτότητα καταγωγής.

Το πρόβλημα παρέμενε άλυτο παρόλες τις προσπάθειες των επιστημόνων. Ήταν αδύνατο η ανθρωπότητα να βρει τρόπο να φύγει μακριά από το πλανητικό της σύστημα, ένα σύστημα που συντηρούσε μεν την ανθρώπινη ζωή αλλά την κρατούσε όμως φυλακισμένη μέσα στα δικά του όρια. Η σμηναγός Τακάτα πήρε την εντολή ν' ασχοληθεί και να προσπαθήσει να βρει μια λύση. Μετά από διάφορες συγκυρίες, ο Μπόλντερ, ένας περίεργος ταξιδιώτης, επιβιβάζεται στο διαστημόπλοιό της και μαζί ψάχνουν για την λύση. Η τελική τους απόφαση ήταν να βρουν άτομα που λειτουργούσαν έξω από τις συνηθισμένες νόρμες, και μ' αυτούς σαν πλήρωμα και ναυπηγώντας ένα περίεργο όχημα, τον ναυτίλο, να προσπαθήσουν για μια φορά ακόμα να σπάσουν το εμπάργκο του πλανητικού συστήματος. Τελικά πέντε άτομα και ένας απόστρατος στρατηγός εντάσσονται στην ομάδα τους που ξεκινάει μ' αυτόν τον τρόπο το τελικό ταξίδι για την κατάκτηση των μακρινών πλανητικών συστημάτων. Ποιοί όμως είναι οι πέντε αυτοί και γιατί ακούν στα τόσο παράξενα ονόματα όπως Μιχαήλ Μπράουν, Ουριέλα Μανού, Γαβριήλ Λεόνε, Ζακχιήλ Σολέιλ και Ραφαέλλα Κούπερ; Και ο στρατηγός Μέτατρον Μάξους, τί ρόλο παίζει; Και πίσω απ' όλους ο κεντρικός υπολογιστής του ηλιακού συστήματος θα μείνει τελικά άπραγος;

Ann Jaffe was born in 1931 in a small town in Eastern Poland, about 75 miles northeast of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Following the partition of Polish land between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939, their part of Poland was ceded to Russia. Ann was 10 years old when Germany attacked the Soviet Union in June of 1941. Within 10 days of the beginning of the war, the Nazi army marched through her town, moving eastward. Shortly thereafter, the rounding up and killing of Jews began. During the 15 months of Nazi occupation, she witnessed the brutal segregation and killing of most Jews in her town. Ann's family escaped execution only because of her parents' useful skillsets, and their extraordinary luck. Transferred to a neighboring Ghetto, sometime later the family miraculously escaped into the neighboring forest, with the help of Russian partisan fighters. Surviving in the forest was brutal, but Ann did so along with her family, which included her 16-month-old baby brother. They hid in the forests of Belarus for 20 months without the benefit of warm clothing or decent shelter; the first winter they all huddled under an open sky and sustained themselves with a scarce supply of potatoes. Constant fear of recapture added to the family's misery. They survived three separate assaults by the German military without being discovered. There were very few lucky survivors. Despite the catastrophic events endured by Ann's family, her story of survival also details the existence of love and resilience within the human spirit. She tells her story not from a place of unresolved hatred, but from a place of tolerance, demonstrating the transformative impact of kindness.

Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences (French: Discours de la Méthode Pour bien conduire sa raison, et chercher la vérité dans les sciences) is a philosophical and autobiographical treatise published by René Descartes in 1637. It is best known as the source of the famous quotation 'Je pense, donc je suis' (English: 'I think, therefore I am', or 'I am thinking, therefore I exist'), which occurs in Part IV of the work. The similar Latin statement, Cogito, ergo sum, is found in Meditations on First Philosophy (1641) and Principles of Philosophy (1644). Discourse on the Method is one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the development of natural sciences. In this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism, which had previously been studied by Sextus Empiricus, Al-Ghazali and Michel de Montaigne. Descartes modified it to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible. Descartes started his line of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any preconceived notions.The book was originally published in Leiden, in the Netherlands. Later, it was translated into Latin and published in 1656 in Amsterdam. The book was intended as an introduction to three works: Dioptrique, Météores and Géométrie. La Géométrie contains Descartes's initial concepts that later developed into the Cartesian coordinate system. The text was written and published in French rather than the language in which philosophical and scientific texts were most frequently written and published in at the time, namely, Latin. Most of Descartes' other works were written in Latin.Together with Meditations on First Philosophy, Principles of Philosophy and Rules for the Direction of the Mind, it forms the base of the epistemology known as Cartesianism. The long chains of simple and easy reasonings by means of which geometers are accustomed to reach the conclusions of their most difficult demonstrations, had led me to imagine that all things, the knowledge of which is competent to man, are mutually connected in the same way, and that there is nothing so far removed from us as to be beyond our reach, or so hidden that we cannot discover it, provided only we abstain from accepting the false for the true, and always preserve in our thoughts the order necessary for the deduction of one truth from another.
