Grades and assessment are elephants in almost every room where discussions of education are underway. This book examines the what, why, and whether of grades: When do they fail? What harm do they do and how can we mitigate that harm? Can we construct more poetic, less supposedly objective, models for assessment? What is ungrading? The word "ungrading" means raising an eyebrow at grades as a systemic practice, distinct from simply "not grading." The word is a present participle, an ongoing process, not a static set of practices. Ungrading is a systemic critique, a series of conversations we have about grades, ideally drawing students into those conversations with the goal of engaging them as full agents in their own education. This book represents over 20 years of thinking and writing about grades. The work of ungrading is to ask hard questions, point to the fundamental inequities of grades, and push for structural change. There are lots of places to begin this work. This book offers a handful of jumping off points, pedagogies and practices to explore to make assessment more equitable.

It's hardly ever easy to move a teenage child to a new town, much less a new state, when they are in high school. Leaving San Diego was unbearably hard for fifteen-year-old Clara Simmons. She'd grown up on the sandy beaches of sunny southern California, had a fast-paced lifestyle, and life-long friends including a boyfriend named Chet. She soon learned that life is a perpetual cycle of change. Georgia was no California. There were no beaches in the small-town not ten miles southwest of Macon, and the dirt was red! Just when she thought she'd catch a bus and go back to San Diego, her resistance shifted to acceptance. Her neighbor, sixteen-year-old Jeremy Gorman, cast new light on living in the country. Missing the California beaches was no longer an issue-the Gorman family lake would do just find. Their friendship grew into a full romance during the senior Christmas dance. Life would never be the same for the two teenagers from that night on.

In the last 20 years, I have driven across America four times, visiting and photographing craft distilleries. Five years ago, I traveled around the world, visiting the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, and Tasmania. Other trips have included to Europe have included England, Ireland, Norway, Czech Republic, France, Germany, and Italy, visiting and photographing the full range of craft distilleries. These trips resulted in numerous books, including 99 Pot Stills and The Nano Distillery. The database on my MacBook Air shows over 18,000 photos, most of which will never be published. To do this book, I reviewed my photo files and culled the best images from my travels. These images were sent to my illustrator Francesca Cosanti in Italy, who translated the photographic jpegs into line drawings for the coloring book. Designer Kate Jordahl then worked with me to design and lay out the entire book.Onward... Bill Owens

After years of traveling the world to help those in the greatest of need, he's faced with a life-altering decision: take his place as crown prince or walk away as a commoner. With no clear path that will satisfy him and the royal family, the tug between following his heart and doing his duty to Andelar becomes harder every day. When a chance encounter throws Missy and Aiden together, neither of them are prepared to challenge what they thought they knew about themselves. And when an ancient royal law threatens to tear them apart, they must decide how much they are willing to risk for love. --from page [4] of cover.
