With the support of the company, and through use of some underhand tactics, he does all he can to remove them.It becomes clear to Lydia that the timbermen will stop at nothing to chase off the people of Black Boar. With the death of her husband-which she rightly blames on the company-her grief turns to rage. Around this time, one of the the escaped convicts is ensnared by a clever deputy. Lydia uses the lost tintype (in a wily cat-and-mouse game) to solicit information on the other man still at large. It works. Burr Hollis is captured and brought to jail in the valley below Black Boar. But when the cagey, deranged Burr escapes from the holding cell, panic ensues. Burr knows that it was Lydia whose ruse helped to capture him, and he heads up onto Black Boar for a reckoning.

SOUTH CAROLINIAN MAXCY GREGG was a lawyer, a classically educated scholar with mastery of many languages, a politician, a veteran of the Mexican-American War, and later a volunteer soldier for the Confederate States of America, mortally wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 at the age of 48. His primary interest, however, was the natural world, especially birds, more than 50 varieties of which he must have identified. His "sporting journals," long neglected sources of antebellum Southern history, were meticulous and are meticulously edited by Suzanne Parfitt Johnson. Gregg's recorded trips cover most of South Carolina, portions of neighboring States, and a sojourn in Mexico-mountains, rivers, Upcountry, Lowcountry. In addition to the wildlife and his hunting prowess or lack thereof, he describes topography, weather, and natural phenomenon (a comet, a hurricane, immense flights of passenger pigeons). The record also provides insight into city, country, and wilderness life. His hunting companions play a prominent part-dogs, horses, and men. Here is a realistic and unusual sample of antebellum Southern life as it was lived day by day. The Hardbound edition of this book was published in October 2019.

In Sum Ledger's historical portraits, ekphrastic sonnets, and closely observed lyrics, Adam Tavel's signature fine-grained details and near hallucinatory clarity, no matter his subject, achieve far more than a kind of painterly attention to subject, something more ambitious and necessary. Tavel is showing us the America we have been and now are with this unspoken but omnipresent principle: to look very closely at the faces of the dead and the living, indeed to touch them, lightly, but not to hold them at arm's length.
