Vom Sommer 1913 bis zum Sommer 1914 arbeitete Husserl zunächst an der Umarbeitung und dann an einer völligen Neufassung der VI. Logischen Untersuchung. Im vorliegenden ersten Teil einer zweibändigen Ausgabe gelangen die im Nachlass erhaltenen Entwürfe zur Umarbeitung der VI. Untersuchung aus dem Sommer 1913 zur Veröffentlichung. Diese Entwürfe lagen zum Teil bereits in Druckproben bzw. Druckfahnen vor, die Husserl dann erneut intensiv überarbeitet und handschriftlich erweitert hat. Nach dem Erscheinen der Ideen I im April 1913 war es nicht nur Husserls Absicht, die VI. Untersuchung seinem neuen methodologischen Standpunkt anzupassen, sondern auch seine langjährigen und weitverzweigten aktphänomenologischen Forschungen, vor allem seine Analysen der Wahrnehmung, der Phantasie und der Aktmodalitäten sowie seine urteilstheoretischen Analysen in den Text einfliessen zu lassen. Der Versuch einer Umarbeitung der VI. Untersuchung erfolgte im Hinblick auf die Neuausgabe der Logischen Untersuchungen im Herbst 1913. Dieser Neuausgabe wollte Husserl eine längere Vorrede voranstellen. Die im Nachlass erhaltenen Bruchstücke von zwei im September 1913 entstandenen Entwürfen dieser Vorrede ergänzen die hier veröffentlichten Umarbeitungsentwürfe.

Die im vorliegenden Band veröffentlichte Vorlesung "Einleitung in die Philosophie" aus dem Wintersemester 1922/23 ist aus vier 1922 von Husserl in London unter dem Titel "Phänomenologische Methode und phänomenologische Philosophie" gehaltenen Vorträgen hervorgegangen. Die Vorlesung befasst sich vor allem mit dem für die Grundlegung eines philosophischen Systems zentralen Problem der Letztbegründung. Radikale philosophische Letztbegründung ist gemäß Husserl nur möglich in einer sich in apodiktischer Selbstkritik bewährenden phänomenologischen Transzendentalphilosophie. Die tatsächliche Durchführung einer solchen letzten, in seinen späten Schriften und Vorlesungstexten immer wieder geforderten Kritik, findet sich nur in der vorliegenden Vorlesung "Einleitung in die Philosophie". Mit diesem unverzichtbaren Bestandteil seiner Ersten Philosophie bringt der vorliegende Band eine wichtige Ergänzung zu der in den Bänden VII und VIII veröffentlichten Vorlesung "Erste Philosophie" von 1923/24.

Mit der im vorliegenden Band der Husserliana Materialien veröffentlichten Vorlesung über "Natur und Geist" vom Sommersemester 1919 sind nun nach den Ideen II und der "Natur und Geist"-Vorlesung von 1927 alle drei großen Auseinandersetzungen Husserls mit der "Natur und Geist"-Problematik in Husserliana-Ausgaben zugänglich gemacht. Die zentrale Bedeutung der Vorlesung von 1919 innerhalb der umfangreichen und langjährigen Forschungen Husserls zum "Natur und Geist"-Thema besteht in ihrer systematischen Übergangsstellung zwischen den vorherigen, mehr an Analysen zur Konstitution von Natur und Geist ausgerichteten Texten und den späteren, diese Thematik eher wissenschaftstheoretisch und wissenschaftskritisch angehenden Arbeiten. In dieser Vorlesung stellt Husserl auf der Grundlage einer allgemeinen Einleitung in die Phänomenologie umfassende Überlegungen zu einer transzendentalen Theorie von Natur und Geist an, in denen er vornehmlich die physische Natur und die ihr zuzuordnenden Wissenschaften zum Gegenstand seiner Untersuchungen macht.

Sie markiert den Übergang zur genetischen Phänomenologie, und sie ist Husserls erster durchgeführter Entwurf einer transzendentalen Logik. Der hier veröffentlichte Teil der Vorlesung diente Ludwig Landgrebe als Grundlage für die Ausarbeitung von Erfahrung und Urteil. Durch den vorliegenden Ergänzungsband wird die ursprüngliche Fassung dieser Vorlesung in ihrer Gesamtheit zugänglich gemacht. Dadurch werden die Analysen zur passiven Synthesis in ihren ursprünglichen transzendental-logischen Zusammenhang gestellt.
