This book meets this surge in development and application of Quaternary tephrochronology at the global scale. Lowe recently completed a review paper recently in which he examined the basis of tephrochrononology as a central stratigraphic and geochronological tool for Quaternary studies (Lowe, 2011). Topics included principles of tephrochronology, defining isochrons, tephra nomenclature, mapping and correlating tephras from proximal to distal locations at metre- to sub-millimetre-scale, cryptotephras, mineralogical and geochemical fingerprinting methods, statistical correlation techniques, and developments and applications in dating including the use of flexible depositional age-modelling techniques based on Bayesian statistics. Together with reference to wide-ranging examples and the identification of key recent advances in tephrochronology, such as the development of new geo-analytical approaches that enable individual small glass shards to be analysed near-routinely for major, trace, and rare-earth elements, potential problems such as miscorrelation, erroneous-age transfer, and tephra reworking and taphonomy (especially relating to cryptotephras) were also examined, the first time such problems have been openly discussed in detail. Some of the challenges and opportunities for future tephrochronological studies were identified. These and other topics thus provide a foundation for the book on tephras/tephrochronology.

ATLAS OF EQUINE ULTRASONOGRAPHYA THOROUGH EXPANSION TO THE FIRST ATLAS OF ULTRASONOGRAPHY IN THE HORSE, WITH NEW AND SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED IMAGESUltrasonography is a vital diagnostic tool that can be applied in numerous functions in a veterinary practice. In conjunction with relevant clinical information--patient history and physical examination findings, for example--it can act as an important aid in the veterinarian's decision-making process. Many vets in equine practice rely upon ultrasonography as a mainstay of equine diagnostic imaging on a wide range of structures and body systems. Ultrasonography is a useful procedure that is non-invasive and acts in complement to radiography to successfully diagnose the animal's condition. This book's aim is to encourage the clinician to rely further on the use of ultrasonography in their practice. The second edition of Atlas of Equine Ultrasonography provides an updated and expanded revision of the first atlas of ultrasonography in the horse. The first edition of this important resource was the first pictorially-based book to cover ultrasonography in the horse, and remains the only book currently available on the subject. The current version offers 450 additional images with greater clarity and precision in the images throughout and demonstrates how to obtain images in each body region while offering clinical ultrasonograms that show pathology.Atlas of Equine Ultrasonography readers will also find:* High-quality clinical ultrasonograms for important musculoskeletal, reproductive, and medical conditions in the horse* More than 1,500 images, with accompanying concise text describing the images* A companion website that provides video clips showing dynamic ultrasound examsAtlas of Equine Ultrasonography is an invaluable reference to any veterinarian evaluating ultrasonograms in equine patients. As a result, this book will be of particular interest to equine specialists, veterinary radiologists, equine practitioners, and veterinary students.

Asymmetric Synthesis of Natural ProductsFully updated learning resource covering the concept of using natural product chemistry for strategies in asymmetric synthesisThe third edition of Asymmetric Synthesis of Natural Products introduces students to the rapidly growing field of natural products in organic chemistry, discussing the practical, mainly pharmacological, importance of selected compounds and emphasizing the target-oriented approach of organic synthesis which is key in industrial strategies. To aid in reader comprehension, the text includes key references and an Index of Compounds. The textbook is based on two lecture courses (Asymmetric Synthesis & Asymmetric Synthesis of Natural Products), which the author has delivered more than 50 times over the past 20 years in Finland, the UK, Italy, and Greece. This third edition is fully updated from the earlier versions (published by Wiley in 1993 and 2012). The importance of natural products as truly renewable raw materials in sustainable chemistry and circular economy is illustrated through applications of e.g. organocatalysis, organometallic catalysis, and biocatalysis. The contents consist of traditional text supplemented with illustrations (such as chemical drawings and structural formulae). Three dimensional aspects are also discussed with the use of 3D renderings of structures for both reaction mechanisms (molecular modeling) and crystallographic data.Sample topics covered in the textbook include:* The foundations of asymmetric synthesis, including the theory and applications of individual asymmetric reactions* Sustainable development, the circular economy, and use of renewable raw materials that have become prominent in many fields of science and technology* Various natural product classes, including carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, proteins, nucleosides, nucleotides, nucleic acids, and polyketides* The properties of these natural product classes, including their structures, biosynthesis, and interrelationships, as well as examples of asymmetric syntheses and the practical value of these compoundsAsymmetric Synthesis of Natural Products is a comprehensive, authoritative, and up-to-date learning resource on the subject for advanced level undergraduate or early-stage graduate students. It is also useful for specialists already working in synthesis who wish to learn about asymmetric synthesis.
