Our churches are beset by challenges. From the outside, they are beset by a rapidly secularizing culture. From the inside, they're being hollowed out by the departure of young people and a watered-down spirituality. Many believers are blind to it, and their churches are too weak to resist. Those who notice are often frightened, and wonder what went wrong and what they can do about these trends. The Benedict Option is a guide for Christians under siege - a strategy that draws on the authority of scripture and the wisdom of the ancient church. The goal: to embrace exile from mainstream culture and construct a resilient counterculture. In this visionary book, Dreher urges today's faithful to be new St Benedicts, building up local churches, creating new schools and taking up practices that can help them face today's world with confidence.Horrified by the moral chaos following Rome's fall, St Benedict - a sixth-century monk - retreated to the forest and created a new way of life. He built enduring communities based on order, hospitality, stability and prayer. His spiritual centres of hope saved not just Christianity but Western civilization. The Benedict Option is both manifesto and rallying cry for Christians who, if they are not to be conquered anew, must learn how to fight on culture war battlefields like none the West has seen for fifteen hundred years. It's for all mere Christians - Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox - who can read the signs of the times. Neither false optimism nor fatalistic despair will do. Only faith, hope, and love, embodied in a renewed church, can sustain us. These are the days for building strong arks for the long journey across a sea of night.

Everything is under control. That is until the mysterious person he's rented his flat to turns out to be none other than... Nash Nadeau, an actor - and the star of all Christopher's favourite Christmas movies. In fact, he's the guy Christpher's been crushing on for the whole past year. Since last Christmas. For Nash, this Christmas was a chance to escape Hollywood, to go to a small town and hide away, alone, in a place where no one knows who he is. But when a huge snowstorm hits, the whole country grinds to a halt. There's no way Christopher is leaving, and there's nowhere else for Nash to stay. The two of them are just going to have to weather this together, snowed in for Christmas...

While talk of Christianity's decline needs qualifying (the Christian faith continues to expand at a global level) it is incontestable that the faith falters in its Middle Eastern and European heartlands, meaning not just the retreat of religion from the public square - external hostility, and a weak response from ecclesiastical ranks, are mutually reinforcing - but also the thinning out of religion itself.   Public spaces have been largely evacuated of Christian presence as the state's ability to meet people's material needs has increased. Different dynamics are at work in various European countries - notably France, Germany and Spain - but the family resemblances are substantial. The Church has been left asking what it still has to talk about as the credibility of its own metaphysical claims has been diluted. Many people grant the positive role played by Europe's Christian heritage in raising us to the branches on which we now perch, but still think that the ladder can be kicked away. People with very little cultural memory of Christianity begin to ask Why should we care? And Is belief in God credible in the first place? Yet the secularist still cuts corners in inferring that the Church has done its job and can now fade away. Based on solid reportage and canvassing a broad range of views - giving due weight both to genuinely positive aspects of progressive politics and ways in which unaccountable ecclesiastical power needs to be challenged - Shortt nevertheless argues that the Churches are seriously underselling themselves. Representing the largest source of social capital on earth, they have a much stronger message than they themselves often recognize. Of course, Britain and other European countries are multicultural. Theocracy and other forms of authoritarianism should be shunned. But Christian values represent humanity's best hope. Clerics and other representatives should be saying so far more robustly.
