This series Dissertations in Language and Cognition explores issues of mental representation, linguistic structure and representation, and their interplay. The research presented in this series is grounded in the idea explored in the Collaborative Research Center The structure of representations in language, cognition and science (SFB 991) that there is a universal format for the representation of linguistic and cognitive concepts.

The articles in this volume are the outcome of the successful BRIDGE Workshop held in Düsseldorf in 2014. The workshop gathered a number of distinguished researchers from formal semantics and conceptual semantics and aimed to initiate a deeper conversation and collaboration instead of separating the two sides as competing views. The workshop provided a platform to further discuss parallelisms on specific semantic issues on the one hand and on the other hand to confront opposed claims from the two different perspectives. This volume represents a selected number of high-quality papers presented at the workshop featuring various approaches to meaning from linguistics, logic and philosophy of language.This series explores issues of mental representation, linguistic structure and representation, and their interplay. On March 11, 2011 the North-East of Japan was hit by a massive magnitude 9 earthquake. The earthquake was followed by a tsunami that destroyed farmland, cities, factories and the infrastructure of the coastal regions and also caused the nuclear meltdowns in the Fukushima Daiichi Powerplant. In media as well as in research the disaster was perceived as a national catastrophe, overlooking itstransnational character. Japanese diasporic communities worldwide organized support and fundraising events to support the devastated regions and thus showed their solidarity with the homeland. In both transient and permanent Japanese communities being active often became a means to overcome the global, local and personal shockwave of the catastrophe and overcome feelings of insecurity. Yet, the broad variety of activities also furthered diasporic civil society and helped to integrate members of Japanese communities more into the surrounding society.By bringing together disaster studies and diaspora studies and analyzing the reactions of Japanese transient and permanent communities in Ghent, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Sao Paulo, Honolulu and London following the Triple Disaster, this volume will help to get a better understanding of how catastrophes effect diasporic communities.

Bulgarisch und Mazedonisch sind die einzigen slawischen Sprachen mit definiten und indefiniten Artikeln. Dabei ist Mazedonisch unter den wenigen Sprachen, die den definiten Artikel deiktisch differenzieren. In einem innovativen Zugang legt die Publikation eine vollständige semantische Analyse der nominalen Determination in beiden Sprachen vor, die auch artikellose Nominalphrasen umfasst.

Mit dem dritten Band der Schriftenreihe Jiddistik: Edition & Forschung liegt der vollständige Erzählungszyklus Eisenbahngeschichten von Scholem Alejchem (1859¿1916) nun erstmals zweisprachig, jiddisch und deutsch, vor.

Gradation is usually considered to be a property of adjectives. Examples like "The boy loves his mother very much" and "The boy has grown a lot" reveal that gradation is not limited to adjectives but verbs are gradable too. Verb gradation has received considerably less attention in the literature than gradation of adjectives. The aim of the current volume is to explore the notion of verb gradation in more detail. The book presents a semantic as well as a syntactic analysis of verb gradation and combines three case studies with a general perspective on the phenomenon. Issues addressed in the volume cover, among others, the notion of scalarity in the verbal domain, the interaction of verb gradation with grammatical as well as lexical aspect and verb gradation as a subcompositional phenomenon. These topics are investigated from a cross-linguistic perspective. The languages of investigation include, among others, German, Russian and French.

The aim of this book is to investigate how definiteness is expressed in Polish, a language which is claimed to have no definite and in-definite articles. The central question is how the difference in definiteness is indicated between ¿a woman¿ and ¿the woman¿ in Polish. In English, the definite article ¿the¿ and the indefinite article ¿ä express the category of definiteness explicitly. Since definiteness is also relevant in articleless languages, there are other means to indicate that a nominal phrase is definite or indefinite. This study is delimited to four means for expressing definiteness in Polish, which are demonstratives, aspect, case alternation, and information structure. Each strategy is investigated independently from the others, although they interact in a complex way, which is shown at the end of this book resulting in a decision tree. Polish is not investigated in isolation, however, the study is complemented by comparisons with other Slavic languages and also with a Polish dialect called ¿Upper Silesian¿, which differs from Polish. The analysis in this book is based on Löbner¿s theory of ¿Concept Types and Determination¿ (CTD). Löbner¿s distinction of the four concept types (sortal, relational, functional, individual) is crucial since definiteness phenomena under discussion can be explained. Therefore, the interaction of the four concept types with the four definiteness strategies plays a central role in this book.

The articles in this volume present original research on the encoding of meaning in a variety of constructions and languages. Many of the contributions take the framework of Role and Reference Grammar as a point of reference, either by applying it to the analysis of linguistic data or by discussing, extending, and challenging some of its assumptions. The topics of the articles range from general questions concerning the relation of meaning and its syntactic realization to the study of specific grammatical phenomena in a number of typologically diverse languages, including Yucatec Maya, Kabardian, Tagalog, Murik-Kopar, Avatime, Whitesands, Tundra Yukaghir, and various Indo-European languages. The articles will be of interest to researchers and advanced students working on the interface between syntax, semantics and pragmatics.

Der öffentliche Meinungsstreit, ob der Islam inzwischen zu Deutschland gehört oder nicht, ist trotz präsidialer Stellungnahmen nicht abschließend entschieden. Kaum bewegen sich Positionen aufeinander zu, reißen aktuelle politische Ereignisse ¿ in Deutschland wie weltweit ¿ Gräben auf, die gerade erst zugeschüttet schienen. Dabei sind die gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen hoch: Nicht weniger als kulturelle Synthesen werden als Chance für Fremdverstehen und das ¿Zugehörigkeitsprojekt Deutschland" eingefordert. Durch den inflationären Gebrauch wechselseitiger Schuldzuweisungen geraten jedoch die Grundlagen für einvernehmliches Zusammenleben leicht aus dem Blick, und dies schadet der Bildung von sozialen Identitäten von Nichtmuslimen wie Muslimen in Deutschland. Die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses Sammelbandes leisten einen wichtigen Beitrag, die Diskussion zu versachlichen, indem sie aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven gesellschaftlich bedeutsame Fragen beantworten und Denkanstöße geben. Dabei gehen sie nicht von einer einheitlichen integrationspolitischen Theoriebildung für den Islam oder die Muslime in Deutschland aus. Vielmehr argumentieren sie gleichermaßen wissenschaftsorientiert wie praxiserfahren aus ihrer Arbeit mit dem Thema ¿Islam" in der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe, an Universitäten, Akademien, Medien und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Instituten, für die Politik sowie für Religionsgemeinschaften. Mit ihren Fakten und Analysen wenden sie sich ebenso an die Öffentlichkeit wie die Wissenschaft und versachlichen die emotional aufgeladene Diskussion um die Rolle des Islam in Deutschland.

Das Hirsch-Institut für Tropenmedizin (HITM) wurde 2013 als Außenstelle der Klinik für Gastroenterologie, Hepatologie und Infektiologie der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf unter Leitung von Professor Dieter Häussinger eröffnet. Das HITM dient dem Zweck des Wissenstransfers in den Bereichen Wissenschaft und Medizin, der Ausbildung von Ärzten sowie der Durchführung wissenschaftlicher Projekte im Bereich der Infektions- und Tropenmedizin. Der vorliegende Band berichtet über die bisherigen Aktivitäten des Instituts, seine Historie und Perspektiven und erlaubt darüber hinaus auch einen Blick hinter die Kulissen des Aufbaus eines Instituts in Afrika und auf die Lebensumstände und Eindrücke der Mitarbeiter. Dieter Häussinger, Direktor des HITM und der Medizinischen Klinik und Poliklinik für Gastroenterologie, Hepatologie und Infektiologie und Lehrstuhlinhaber für Innere Medizin an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, ist im Bereich der klinischen und experimentellen Hepatologie und Gastroenterologie aktiv. Er engagiert sich für die Weiterentwicklung der klinischen Infektiologie. In diesem Zusammenhang erfolgte die Zertifizierung seiner Klinik als Zentrum für Infektiologie, der Aufbau einer tropenmedizinischen Ambulanz und Infektionssprechstunde, die Errichtung des Leber- und Infektionszentrums mit der einzigen Sonderisoliereinheit in Nordrhein-Westfalen für hochinfektiöse Patienten sowie die Gründung des Hirsch-Instituts für Tropenmedizin.
