The Abased Christ is the first monograph to be devoted exclusively to Søren Kierkegaard's Christological masterpiece, Practice in Christianity. Alongside an argument for a new translation of the work's title, it offers detailed textual commentary on a series of themes in Practice in Christianity, such as the person of Christ, contemporaneity, imitation, and Kierkegaard's philosophy of history. Anti-Climacus, the pseudonymous author of Practice in Christianity, presents to his readers a uniquely challenging understanding of who Christ is and what it means to follow him. The Christ of Anti-Climacus is not the glorious Christ who abides with the Father in heaven, but the abased Christ who is poor, marginal, offensive, and persecuted. Throughout Practice in Christianity, we are called not only to perceive the abased Christ, but to follow after him. The Abased Christ aims to enrich historical theologians' appreciation of Kierkegaard's Christology. However, it concludes by grappling with questions of power, agency, and sacrifice which have been at the forefront of contemporary theology in the 20th and 21st centuries, thereby suggesting how we might make sense of Kierkegaard's Christology today.

Interested in the ideological workings of fiction, I study how major avant-garde tropes promote the potential of permanent renewal as white America's property. Renewal ties to the capacities to create, progress, transcend, and simply be. From Black critique we know that, within dominant discourse, all these capacities have been denied to Black bodies ever since colonization. Black work has been fetishized, appropriated, stolen, and dismissed in and by dominant culture, while Black being is construed as negativity and barred on the level of ontology. It follows then that racialization operates on multiple levels in the conceptual frame of renewal. I study this conceptualization by re-reading the works of and criticism on progressive white authors. I examine how images of renewal enable the claim on futurity, transformative potential, and movement forward as exclusively white properties. Premised on oppositions between positive capacities and a state of complete incapacitation, these images are often viewed as separate constructions. This project shows that, deriving from white ideology, such representations are symbiotic and simultaneous - the "good" story of white renewal rests on the continual transgression towards Black being.

This book is an introduction to financial mathematics. It is intended for graduate students in mathematics and for researchers working in academia and industry. The focus on stochastic models in discrete time has two immediate benefits. First, the probabilistic machinery is simpler, and one can discuss right away some of the key problems in the theory of pricing and hedging of financial derivatives. Second, the paradigm of a complete financial market, where all derivatives admit a perfect hedge, becomes the exception rather than the rule. Thus, the need to confront the intrinsic risks arising from market incomleteness appears at a very early stage. Slaves were property of their dominus, objects rather than persons, without rights: These are some components of our basic knowledge about Roman slavery. But Roman slavery was more diverse than we might assume from the standard wording about servile legal status. Numerous inscriptions as well as literary and legal sources reveal clear differences in the social structure of Roman slavery. There were numerous groups and professions who shared the status of being unfree while inhabiting very different worlds. The papers in this volume pose the question of whether and how legal texts reflected such social differences within the Roman servile community. Did the legal system reinscribe social differences, and if so, in what shape? Were exceptions created only in individual cases, or did the legal system generate privileges for particular groups of slaves? Did it reinforce and even promote social differentiation? All papers probe neuralgic points that are apt to challenge the homogeneous image of Roman slave law. They show that this law was a good deal more colourful than historical research has so far assumed. The authors' primary concern is to make this legal diversity accessible to historical scholarship.

This edition includes the letters exchanged between Charles S. Peirce and the Open Court Publishing Company between 1890 and 1913. Open Court published more of Peirce's philosophical writings than any other publisher during his lifetime, and played a critical role in what little recognition and financial income he received during these difficult, yet philosophically rich, years. Russia's war against Ukraine has grave consequences in several political categories. These include: a reassessment of the school of 'political realism', one of whose proponents claims to have predicted the war. Was the West partly 'responsible' for the war? Second, to what extent does the war of aggression, as an undeniable violation of law, damage the status of international law and justice? Third, the war is embedded in political developments that stretch back a century. It is examined in its context within American foreign policy since the Wilsonian peace programme, in relation to the dangerous reluctance of the EU to pursue a decisive geopolitical policy towards Russia, and interpreted in the light of Stalinist echoes within Russian politics.

The volume develops the concepts of the self and its reflexive nature as they are linked to modern thought from Hegel to Luhmann. The moderns are reflexive in a double sense: they create themselves by self-reflexivity and make their world - society - in their own image. That the social world is reflexive means that it is made up of non-subjective (or supra-subjective) communication. The volume's contributors analyze this double reflexivity, of the self and society, from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing both on individual and social narratives. This broad, interdisciplinary approach is a distinctive mark of the entire project. The volume will be structured around the following axes: Self-making and reflexivity - theoretical topics; Social self and the modern world; Literature - self and narrativity; Creative Self - text and fine art. The primary audience for this book is students and the young researchers interested in the core of the discipline. Commutative algebra is by and large a self-contained discipline, which makes it quite dry for the beginner with a basic training in elementary algebra and calculus. A stable mathematical discipline such as this enshrines a vital number of topics to be learned at an early stage, more or less universally accepted and practiced. Naturally, authors tend to turn these topics into an increasingly short and elegant list of basic facts of the theory. So, the shorter the better. However, there is a subtle watershed between elegance and usefulness, especially if the target is the beginner. From my experience throughout years of teaching, elegance and terseness do not do it, except much later in the carrier. To become useful, the material ought to carry quite a bit of motivation through justification and usefulness pointers. On the other hand, it is difficult to contemplate these teaching devices in the writing of a short book. I have divided the material in three parts. starting with more elementary sections, then carrying an intermezzo on more difficult themes to make up for a smooth crescendo with additional tools and, finally, the more advanced part, versing on a reasonable chunk of present-day steering of commutative algebra. Historic notes at the end of each chapter provide insight into the original sources and background information on a particular subject or theorem. Exercises are provided and propose problems that apply the theory to solve concrete questions (yes, with concrete polynomials, and so forth).

The conception of disinterested pleasure is not only central to Kant's theory of beauty but also highly influential in contemporary philosophical discourse about beauty. However, it remains unclear, what exactly disinterested pleasure is and what role it plays in experiences of beauty. This volume sheds new light on the conception of disinterested pleasure from the perspectives of both Kant scholarship and contemporary aesthetics. In the first part, the focus is on Kant's theory of beauty as grounded on the conception of disinterested pleasure. In the second part, disinterested pleasure is investigated in the light of contemporary debates on beauty. The organization of the material is presented as follows: This introductory chapter I represents a theoretical analysis of the computational algorithms for a numerical solution of the basic equations in continuum mechanics. In this chapter, the general requirements for computational grids, discretization, and iterative methods for black-box software are examined. Finally, a concept of a two-grid algorithm for (de-)coupled solving multidimensional non-linear (initial-)boundary value problems in continuum mechanics (multiphysics simulation) in complex domains is presented. Chapter II contains descriptions of the sequential Robust Multigrid Technique which is developed as a general-purpose solver in black-box codes. This chapter presents the main components of the Robust Multigrid Technique (RMT) used in the two-grid algorithm (Chapter I) to compute the auxiliary (structured) grid correction. This includes the generation of multigrid structures, computation of index mapping, and integral evaluation. Finite volume discretization on the multigrid structures will be explained by studying a 1D linear model problem. In addition, the algorithmic complexity of RMT and black-box optimization of the problem-dependent components of RMT are analysed. Chapter III provides a description of parallel RMT. This chapter introduces parallel RMT-based algorithms for solving the boundary value problems and initial-boundary value problems in unified manner. Section 1 presents a comparative analysis of the parallel RMT and the sequential V-cycle. Sections 2 and 3 present a geometric and an algebraic parallelism of RMT, i.e. parallelization of the smoothing iterations on the coarse and the levels. A parallel multigrid cycle will be considered in Section 4. A parallel RMT for the time-dependent problems is given in Section 5. Finally, the basic properties of parallel RMT will be summarized in Section 6. Theoretical aspects of the used algorithms for solving multidimensional problems are discussed in Chapters IV. This chapter contains the theoretical aspects of the algorithms used for the numerical solving of the resulting system of linear algebraic equations obtained from discrete multidimensional (initial-)boundary value problems.

Ce livre présente l'édition et la traduction annotée de fragments issus d'un traité de maqālāt d'Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Qalānisī. À la différence d'al-Balḫī et d'al-Asʿarī, les deux grands auteurs de maqālāt de cette époque, notre auteur n'est ni muʿtazilite ni formé chez les muʿtazilites, mais un 　théologien traditionniste　 de l'école d'Ibn Kullāb. Seuls fragments restants de ce grand théologien, ces maqālāt reflètent sa volonté d'intégrer les milieux sunnites dans les débats théologiques du iii e/ixe s. L'histoire qu'il nous livre des premiers siècles du kalām prend ainsi le contrepied aussi bien de celle des muʿtazilites que de celle des ḥanbalites, pour qui les métiers de théologiens et traditionnistes s'excluent mutuellement. Ainsi, al-Qalānisī participe avec al-Ashʿarī de ce grand mouvement de synthèse qui caractérise le ive/xe s tout en se démarquant fondamentalement de son célèbre contemporain. This book investigates a number of central problems in the philosophy of Charles Peirce grouped around the realism of his semiotics: the issue of how sign systems are developed and used in the investigation of reality. Thus, it deals with the precise character of Peirce's realism; with Peirce's special notion of propositions as signs which, at the same time, denote and describe the same object. It deals with diagrams as signs which depict more or less abstract states-of-affairs, facilitating reasoning about them; with assertions as public claims about the truth of propositions. It deals with iconicity in logic, the issue of self-control in reasoning, dependences between phenomena in their realist descriptions. A number of chapters deal with applied semiotics: with biosemiotic sign use among pre-human organisms: the multimedia combination of pictorial and linguistic information in human semiotic genres like cartoons, posters, poetry, monuments. All in all, the book makes a strong case for the actual relevance of Peirce's realist semiotics.

The Hatata Inquiries are two extraordinary texts of African philosophy composed in Ethiopia in the 1600s. Written in the ancient African language of Geʿez (Classical Ethiopic), these explorations of meaning and reason are deeply considered works of rhetoric.
