The menu needed altered severely. Not fit to consume or eat: that's how folks viewed the politics served to them in Kentucky. Candidates didn't level with the people. Dishing out negative advertising throughout the campaign sickened voters. Forking over the most massive helpings of money-the key ingredient-enabled a Carey Lucas and Hayward Thomas primary victory. A diet of deceit and greed--consumed by the congressman and his daughter, Myra (the apple does not fall far from the tree). The congressman's daughter and best friend, Royce VanArsdale, lead exciting, rich, tumultuous lives in the Bluegrass' thoroughbred racing world. Royce VanArsdale and Leila Nichols share a rich lifelong history of eccentric, family secrets among the Bluegrass elite. Their friendship tears apart as the congressman's daughter weaves a web of deceit and lies. US Congressman Carey Lucas pockets the largest pool of money of any departing member of Congress--$700-thousand--free to take his campaign chest by not running for office. Corruption of the Highest Order. Congressman Carey Lucas' actions reflect one of the reasons why the public holds Congress in such low esteem. It validates their concern that there are a lot of people who get into politics to benefit themselves financially. The money was not supposed to be a special interest pension fund, but was contributed to the Lucas election campaign. By running for governor against the millionaire horse breeder, Congressman Lucas could pocket that money (by not seeking another congressional term). The US representative broke that promise he made while running for governor-to "not keep any of that money." He put into his pocket what remained in his congressional campaign fund...bad politics, bad taste, and bad for the Republican party. The congressman misleads the public with press releases--including remarks about the Persian Gulf War (used to benefit his campaign). Protagonist Royce VanArsdale, along with others, fight anorexic behavior--struggling to tame their fight for perfection, demanded by extremely wealthy and successful families who often expect too much. The politics, itself-along with substance--is purely anorectic....

In this short story collection, Gary Troia shares his adventures, travels and memoirs from his life."Excellent! A collection of short stories about: depression, alcoholism and drug use. Very compelling reading. I read this short story collection all in one go." (Maria, Goodreads.) "Gary manages to take the mundanities of life and elevate them to brilliance. in this short story collection" (Sara Fell) "Author, Gary cements growing reputation...A Bricklayer's Tales touches on real-life experiences in the building trade." ( Salina Patel, Hounslow Cronicle) Anyone who has ever done building work for brutal wage slavery and wondered if they were going mad, will recognise the life of Ray Dennis, (Troia's alter ego) which evokes a vision of mind-numbing, soul-destroying workplaces and workmates. His is the voice of discord for the marginally employed, the creatively frustrated working Joe, who turns to a life of drink and drugs to elevate the monotony of life. Few have brought this world to life with such despair, black humour and indifference as Gary Troia. He paints a beautifully sad portrait of a truly messed up person with potential, struggling to keep his messed up mind from drowning in cheap wine and self-loathing. Ray's spirit is trapped in a world of endless grey mundanity. A Bricklayer's Tales is the ultimate "I hate this job" story, written as a collection of short stories and memoirs, each one containing a snapshot of the life of Ray. Troia captures the tedium of working in a low paid, menial job and living hand to mouth. This book of short stories is sad and questions the reader to ask questions about their own life. This book achieves clarity without trying. Ray has three expensive hobbies: drinking, drugs, and running away. Without the income that Bricklaying provides, he would not be able to maintain his chosen lifestyle, so he compromises his principles and continues with his trade. A collection of short stories and memoirs that include: Angel Dust, the peculiar story of a man whose new life in America leads to conversations with Ancient Greek philosophers Mrs McClintock, an absurd farce in which a Glaswegian couple retire to Spain A Bricklayer's Tale, the story of a disillusioned, alcoholic bricklayer What I Did In My Summer Holidays In 1000 Words, could having an idea ever be considered a criminal act? My Grandfather's Shed, the making of an English key Peyote, hippies, LSD and an idyllic refuge Return Ticket, handcuffed and ready for deportation. A sad departure from the States The Day My Soul Left Me, "to be or not to be? That is the question" Advert In The Art Shop Window, will a new building job in Spain be the start of a new life? The Unchangeable Chameleon, can a leopard change it's spots? A collection short stories and memoirs of British dark humour.

  • av Robert a Buckmaster
    239,-

In this groundbreaking book, independent language researcher and teacher trainer Robert Buckmaster tackles the problems of English pedagogical grammar by re-imagining English grammar as a system of distance, meaning and conventions: G[DMC]. Current pedagogical grammar is marred by exceptions and special uses: past forms are used in present time; short cut rules avoid focusing on word and form meaning; and grammar rules are imprecise and difficult to operationalize. It is a retrospective grammar of language analysis, not one of language in use. Learners struggle to understand the complexities of English grammar and fail to use the language to the full potential. The usual excuse has been that the forms (e.g. the present perfect) are difficult and need to be taught and retaught. But what if the interpretation of grammar which has been taught is at fault? What if we have, in fact, made the task difficult because of the analysis which is presented to learners? What if there were a different, more internally consistent view of English grammar which could be taught instead? In fact there is: it is a prospective grammar to use to understand language as it happens. This new grammar sees tense as not being about time but about distance: time distance, reality distance and formality distance. All words have meanings but some also have form meanings, and these form meanings combine and add to our understanding of speaker meaning. And language conventions govern much of English grammar - like word order and collocations. The Ideas of English Grammar introduces the five key distance ideas, eight form meanings, the key modal/modifying verb meanings, the concepts of distance between words and in sentences and utterances, the conventional pathways of verbs and nouns, the conventions of questions and time phrases, and includes an analysis of conditionals (seven of them) and reported speech. The book also touches on a new model of language - the Associative Model - and considers some key principles from that model: the Placement and Start Here principles. All this is supported by hundreds of clear example sentences, tables and diagrams. This is a completely new, wholly coherent and internally consistent, and teachable system of English grammar which avoids the problems and pitfalls of traditional grammar. All teachers, trainers and coursebook writers will benefit from re-examining English grammar with the help of this re-imagining of English grammar.

Get ready to experience an action filled Summer on the P Bar J Ranch. Long time Arizona rancher Jeff Dean is thinking back to a particular summer over 60 years ago. The summer begins with Jeff getting settled in, meeting & becoming friends with the ranch owners' 11 year old twins (Lenny & Lynda), getting to know the hired hands, and taking a bike ride with Lenny on their Schwinns to fish and explore.Readers will experience an action filled childhood summer on the P Bar J Ranch and in the process will pick up true bits of history, cowboy etiquette, tips on handling horses, and a feeling for the time and place. There are also shoot outs with bank robbers, and a good dose of early '50s nostalgia, e.g. Roy Rogers, cap guns, B westerns, and Schwinn bicycles.

A deadly mistake in an otherwise routine crime for Brikken Motorcycle Club puts an eight-year-old girl in front of Chief. Just why Chief steps up to become Johanna's guardian escapes his reasoning, nor has he wasted time trying to find an excuse beyond protecting a child's innocence from the club's criminal activities. He only knows that when he looks down into her sweet, innocent face full of curiosity instead of fear, she moves him. Her eyes are more expressive, her personality more addictive, than anything he's ever experienced. He provides and gives, and makes her feel special. She isn't only his taste of freedom from the hard life he lives, but his spring, summer, fall, winter. The Good House & The Bad House is a long-poem and essay using graphics and text to explore place-memory, factual metaphor, the after-effects of multi-generational conflicts, and transness. These themes are continuously in need of the house as their setting, bringing forgiveness to the merging of multiple selves which are stationed simultaneously in memory and the present.Published by Recenter Press.

From the author of the BEST SELLING BOOK "The Miraculous Results of Extremely High Doses of the Sunshine Hormone-Vitamin D3-My One Year Experiment......." This IS the better mousetrap! Most MD's get just a basic 4 years in Med School, then work to earn not learn. I've researched diseases and aging for 20+ years, with a 10 year stint where I spent 12 hrs/day everyday in the Northwestern Med School's library just reviewing clinical and scientific studies! .I've had 3 major papers published; the publishing journal has 5 Nobel Prizes between the editors. And described my papers as extremely exciting and of major importance! It's time to take control of your Alzheimer's treatment and try protocols that have actually worked and are based on the newest, latest, cutting-edge, and CORRECT theory. Why is it that Big Pharma still pushes Alzheimer's treatments like aricept, namenda, razadyne, exelon, cognex that are expensive, have side effects, and are basically do nothing? Because it's the only way they can make money on Alzheimer's! The treatments that work-are unpatentable/ unprofitable! The latest theory (which is PROVING correct) is that Alzheimer's, like other diseases of aging, is actually caused by the huge increase in the reproduction-related hormone -Luteinizing Hormone (LH)- that occurs in both men and women after age 50 (up to 1,000's of %!). Just like annual plants, and Pacific Salmon that are killed after a burst of reproduction by their reproductive hormones- humans undergo the same process except in slow motion! LH is literally eating away at our brains and bodies! The evidence that the"LH causes AD" theory is true is becoming larger and even attracting scientists from the ultra-conservative NIH (National Institute of Health), it is all detailed here in this book. When the hormone LH rises too much in young children it causes precocious puberty (reaching sexual maturity as young as 5 years old!). To stop precocious puberty, doctors have been using Lupron injections for years which stops the rise in LH. Lupron injections have also been used successfully to STOP the progression of Alzheimer's in a small pilot study which is described in detail in this book. Melatonin, which also suppresses LH has also been shown to STOP the progression of AD! The melatonin study is also described in detail in this book. Newsflash!- The results of an additional new study showed that melatonin plus daily exercise completely halted Alzheimer's disease in a mouse model of AD where the mice had not one but three different AD causing mutations. The study is described in this new edition. Also I just took 300mg for 2 months & tested my LH levels which dropped 30%-it works! Why doesn't Big Pharma promote new treatments based on this cutting edge new theory-BECAUSE THEY CAN'T MAKE ANY MONEY ON IT! They would rather keep selling you Aricept and pretending they don't accept the new evidence! Heck -they probably think you are eventually going to die anyway so what's the big deal? Anyone can just go buy melatonin over the counter, and any doctor can write a prescription for Lupron which is about to go off patent in 2015! Read this book and follow its protocols to stop Alzheimer's in its tracks! Also learn about the fantastic promise of high dose melatonin as a treatment for AD and possible side effects to look out for based on my year-long experiment and the experience of my friends taking huge doses of melatonin. This is by far your best chance at stopping Alzheimer's!
