August Wilson (1945-2005) wrote one play for every decade of the twentieth century that explored black life in America for the descendants of slaves. All of his characters seek wholeness, identity, and reconstituted selves after the terror of 250 years chattel slavery and its terrifying legacy. Their history, culture, wisdom, joys, triumphs, pain, sufferings, victories, weaknesses, and strengths are all embodied in one character, Aunt Ester. She is as old as the number of years blacks have been on these shores. All of the characters in the ten-play cycle are her children. Their search is through circumstance and adventure, certainly. This author demonstrates how Wilson uses language--poetry, the blues--to bring each play''s characters to a point of wholeness, redemption, and freedom, not from history, but ennobled and strengthened by it. Wilson employs fundamental theological doctrines to exhort Aunt Ester''s children to remember by whom and how they were freed and made whole.""Only the willfully ignorant do not understand the centrality of the African-American experience in the larger framework of American history. Only an ostrich, head buried in the sand, does not know the breadth of August Wilson''s stunning body of work. But only Riley Temple could expose that work--and its unifying genius--with scholarship and emotion and genuine Spirit!""--Ken Burns, filmmaker""This book should serve as required reading for every artist, student of theater, and every lover of the American Stage. It is stunning in its unique approach to, and understanding of, the great national treasure--August Wilson--that has left us so much in the form of ten extraordinary plays. . . . I say boldly and loudly that Aunt Ester''s Children Redeemed is insightful, enduring, and unforgettable.""--Kenny Leon, Broadway director ""Here is an outstanding study of an iconic African-American playwright: August Wilson. Elegantly written, masterful analytical, and utterly illuminating, this is a book that opens up a new world for cultural connection grounded in theological reflection. A new genre is being born, a genre of interconnected literary theology, a genre that has the potential to shatter the conventional artistic and theological worlds.""--Ian S. Markham, Virginia Theological Seminary Riley Keene Temple is an avid American arts advocate and supporter, and has been honored for his leadership of arts organizations. He is a telecommunications attorney in Washington DC, where his Board memberships include the National Archives Foundation and the Trust for the National Endowment for the Humanities. He holds a Masters degree, cum laude, of Theological Studies from the Virginia Theological Seminary. He has written frequently on theology and the creative arts.

The influence of Hans Frei (1922-1988) is wide and deep in contemporary theology, even though he published little in his own lifetime. These two volumes collect a wide range of his letters, lectures, book reviews, and other items, many of them not previously available in print. Together, they display the range and richness of Frei's thinking, and provide new insights into the nature and implications of his work. They are an invaluable resource for all those interested in Frei's work, and for any interested in his central themes: the development of modern biblical hermeneutics, the interpretation of biblical narrative, and the figural interpretation of all reality in relation to the narrated identity of Jesus Christ.

""If my life and experience is of some interest, it is chiefly so because I have lived through interesting times, in an interesting country, traveled to many interesting places, and been accompanied along the way by interesting folk.""John de Gruchy is a renowned South African theologian and an inspiration to many. An expert on the work of the anti-Nazi theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, De Gruchy is also a local struggle icon in his own right. In this book, we trace his story from his Viking ancestry, via a seafaring grandfather and illegitimate grandmother, to where he became an ecumenical activist for the South African Council of Churches and up to the present. We journey through a South Africa in transition and a rapidly changing global society. Along the way we meet varied, often controversial people, like Albert Luthuli, Jaap Durand, P.W. Botha and Constand Viljoen. With a foreword by his friend Desmond Tutu, this is the tale of an extraordinary life lived to the full.John de Gruchy is Emeritus Professor of Christian Studies at the University of Cape Town, where he taught for over 30 years.

Centered upon the lives of employees at a Manhattan advertising firm, the AMC television series Mad Men touches on the advertising world's unique interests in consumerist culture, materialistic desire, and the role of deception in Western capitalism. While the subject matters of the chapters in this collection have a decidedly socio-historical focus, the authors use basic topics as starting points for philosophical, religious, and theological reflections. The authors show how Mad Men reveals deep truths concerning the social trends of the 1960s and early 1970s in American life and deserves a significant amount of reflection from philosophical, religious, and theological perspectives. Some of the chapters go beyond mere reflection and make deeper inquiries into what these trends say about American cultural habits, the business world within Western capitalism, and the rapid social changes (gender, race, and sexuality) that occur during this period. Chapters examine paradigms of masculinity and femininity as well as the presentation of motherhood, fatherhood, sexuality, and childhood. This collection shows how social change represents the undercurrent of the interpersonal dramas of the characters on Mad Men, from the staid and conventional early seasons to the war, assassinations, riots, and counterculture of later seasons.

The Turning Aside is about stepping out of our routines--like Moses turning from tending sheep, like a certain man selling his everything to buy a field--to take time to consider the ways of God in the company of some of the finest poets of our time. Turn aside with such established poets as Wendell Berry, Les Murray, Luci Shaw, Elizabeth Jennings, Richard Wilbur, Dana Gioia, and Christian Wiman--and respond to their invitation for us to muse along with them. Walk with poets from various parts of the planet, even though some of them are less known, whose words have been carefully crafted to encourage us in our turning aside. The Turning Aside is a collection of Christian poetry from dozens of the most spiritually insightful poetic voices of recent years. It is a book I have long dreamed of compiling, and it has grown beyond my mere imagining in its fulfillment.
