Hi. I'm Marissa Sanlier. Up until a few days ago, I was a twenty-year-old girl living with my great, great... maybe a few more greats... aunt in Pennsylvania. She died... mysteriously... and left me everything. Her fortune, her corporation, and this huge estate. But she also left me a note. That note led me to secrets that dated back thousands... tens of thousands of years and laid to rest the question of where we came from, why we were here, and who made us this way.I stumbled onto an ancestry of assassins dedicated to seeing the innocents remain free, and ensuring the plots of secret societies hidden in the shadows never come to pass. Secret societies that always existed, clouded in conspiracy theories, but whose history dates back to the birth of mankind! My great aunt trained me from a toddler to one day take her place... unknown to me... and I was now supposed to simply accept her role as guardian? The choice is clear. I could fade into a privileged lifestyle, ignore the genetic enhancements passed on to me by dead parents, and watch the world fall slowly into chaos, slavery, and total subjugation by those working in the shadows. Or I could take up the mantle of my ancestors and become...The Hawk!

The stories in Gettin' High take place mainly in New York City and Puerto Rico, though three are set in rural Michigan where the author grew up. They transpire during the turbulent decade of the 1960s. As the title suggests, many characters smoke weed and experience its eerie and pleasurable effects. That is one current running through several stories, though not a major theme. Rather, the thematic anchor is the search for love and meaning in a changing, transient world. The characters are generally involved with music, as performers or students, and what it means to become a professional musician. Music as a means to communicate truly with another person is also an important facet of the plot lines in the stories, whether this is on a river tour or on a formal concert stage, and the characters strive to find the essence of their art in various ways. Of course, music goes beyond words, and this musical quest is what propels many of the characters' lives and loves. Also, the real-life business of music is another salient aspect for character development.Three of the stories are set in the rural landscape of the author's youth. Here the theme of the demise of the family farm is set forth against the backdrop of the long transition from an agrarian to an urban life style which has taken place throughout the 20th century. All of the stories in Gettin' High were written many years ago while the author himself was working as a professional musician in the Puerto Rico Symphony. As such, they may seem somewhat dated, since this was a time before iphones, the internet, TikTok and social media. People actually needed to communicate more directly with one another, in a more intimate fashion. And this is reflected in the plots and dialogue of the stories. The roles of men and women were also, for better or worse, more rigidly defined. And this perspective undoubtedly finds its way into the portrayal of the characters as they seek to explore new boundaries and experiences--from the farm to the concert stage to smoking weed--a long trajectory set against the backdrop of the Vietnam war.Though these stories were mostly written over 50 years ago, the author believes that they are still relevant in today's world. The subject of abortion figures in A Love Story as well as interracial love. Also, a forgotten incident of child abuse rears its head in The Hermit as well as performance anxiety in The Recital. The racism still lingering in the South of the early 1960s, and which America is still struggling to truly confront, plays a role in Milly-A Fantasy. And undoubtedly, the transformative potential of music has not diminished over the years--whether it be jazz, the folk music of the 1960s, today's Hip-Hop and Rap or the classical music of the formal, concert stage. Humanity still seems to thrive on music's inherent message of hope and its curative power. Finally, it is the author's hope that, at the very least, readers will find something of themselves in the characters of these tales as they seek out life's ephemeral joys, happiness and fulfillment in today's challenging world.

Perhaps Harrison Hamblin should have known when that body hit the Land Rover's hood. With a huge, unexpected thump. As it slid hesitantly off the hood, next hitting the road's feeble rock barrier, and tumbling into the ravine.Maybe he should have known what his colleague, the Navajo genius Michael ThreeHats, explained. "As my brothers the Apache's would have done. A warning. Turn around, leave our land, or meet our challenges." Harry was naively eager to meet this latest test. So he has accepted the challenge of carrying unknown, probably contraband freight to his old stamping ground, Dar es Sabir (Door of patience). And putting up with the irritable band of Tuaregs who seem be trailing him constantly. And other tests and challenges: Encountering excitable Tuaregs, odd, half-starved pygmies, Jean d'Argent his former manservant, now a successful entrepreneur, a past love and old friends and acquaintances in Dar es Sabir, now a newly declared city-state renamed the Republic of Independent People. The RIP is the fabrication of Wahid, the former revolutionary who conquered Sabir on the third try. And Harry even admired him as a kind of Robin Hood before this revolution. But things had changed. Wahid had become tyrannical, potential foes were "counting dunes," (a euphemism for summary execution), and his father's rumored lost treasure was foremost on his mind. Driving all his decisions. Bad ones.Harry has acquired the name, passport and identity of a German arms dealer who was coincidentally his bunk-mate as he sailed to Algeria. We also soon learn that Wahid is a practicing pedophile, that the reputedly honest judge has compromised his own integrity, and that the beautiful Amina (protagonist for three years in Harry's dreams), has married Wahid but has failed to bear him children. In the background lurks Alain, evil twin to Antoine, the former police chief.

This is a book of Rock-solid hope in the Truth. People of the Twenty-first Century, this is the letter that is written to you, this is your book.Though not God-breathed like all of the Bible, it respects, reflects, and draws directly from God's Word in a Scripture-saturated, but contemporary, conversational style. Your "executive summary" on this verse-by-verse commentary:People in every century, in every generation since the First Century AD have treated the letter "to the seven churches which are in Asia" as their own, as if it arrived with today's mail; the general, incorrect assumption has always been, and continues to be that Revelation is about our own time and place. However, the title and opening verses of "The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants - things which must shortly take place" tell all readers since the seventh decade of the First Century that this circular letter to those historic churches and inspired book of the Bible was written to them, and not to us!Furthermore, since God's words will not return to Him void, without accomplishing their purpose, the believers in those churches understood the ultra-timely message; to them, Revelation was not a book of unfathomable mystery! Finally, from the chain-of-command described in Revelation 1:1-3, we also see that the testimony of this Apocalypse - this Revealing - is that of Jesus Christ Himself, The Way, The Truth, and The Life.Christ is our infallible Guide to The Father and eternal fellowship with Him. So if we stay within the guardrails that God has established and on the path that makes all the difference, hope becomes reality!

A THIRST IN BABYLON is a fact-based novel relating the events leading up to the St. Francis Dam disaster in 1928, near Los Angeles. It follows the life of William Mulholland, chief engineer of the Los Angeles Water Company, who spent most of his fifty years with the company searching for new sources of water to accommodate the needs of a rapidly growing population in a city that he had grown to love. Several of those years were spent in the construction of an aqueduct that would traverse 240 miles of desert, and tunnel through a mountain range, to reach its final destination in Los Angeles. Historians would laud the construction of the aqueduct as the greatest achievement of its kind - second only to the building of the Panama Canal. The St. Francis was not the first dam Mulholland constructed in the development of reservoirs in the Los Angeles area, but it would be the last. The dam was constructed to contain water to be used in the event of a drought. There would be enough water to accommodate the needs of Los Angeles throughout the dry period. When full, the St. Francis Dam would hold back 12 billion gallons of water. Sadly, two years after the structure was completed, at a time of night when most of the unsuspecting community was sleeping, the dam collapsed, unleashing a gigantic flood of water, a hundred feet high, that would travel fifty miles, the Pacific Ocean. It is also the story of those who courageously responded to the disaster, taking part in the rescue and recovery of the flood victims. Many of their stories are related in this account of the disaster. The story describes the actions of the unsung heroes - those who tended to the bodies of those who did not survive the tragedy. The St. Francis Dam collapse has been recognized as the greatest man-made disaster in California history. At least four hundred known people were killed in the flood, though many victims are still missing.

Yet they come in the hopes their lives will be touched, they experience healing and their lives are changed. Imagine what it is like to see a little girl raised from the dead. Even though it may be illegal to convert others to Christianity, when the people see the miracles and hear about Jesus Christ who is the healer, the people want to commit their lives to Him.Our team also provides leadership training to tribal leaders who do not have access to Bible schools or colleges. Some of these tribal leaders will walk for days through dangerous jungles to meet with us and enjoy practical Bible training. This book talks about experiences like this which have built the faith of the author and will strengthen yours also.

A book of poems, all of which were written in 2023/4, in a variety of styles and approaches. All of them are short (no more than one page). The content is varied, but perhaps the best way to describe their overall style or flavour might be to say that they concern themselves with many of the themes of traditional Romanticism: nature, madness, love, nostalgia, childhood, memory, loss, melancholia, dreams, the supernatural, beauty. Many have a philosophical tone.About a fifth of the poems are ekphrastic: that is, they are reactions to other works of art, especially paintings and songs. For example, there are poems based on paintings by Van Gogh, Matisse, Velasquez, Hopper, (among many others), and songs by Nico, the Beach Boys, Neu and Popol Vuh (again among others).Since the author is now 70 and most of the poems are written in a fairly traditional style, they might appeal most to fellow Boomers. Many of the poems deal with coming to terms with getting old, looking back at one's life, and preparing to face death. This sounds grim, but the mood of the poems varies a lot.As well as the poems, the book also has two other sections featuring short stories and essays. The eight short stories follow the modern trend of being really short by past standards, often around 1000-1500 words. There is no flash fiction, though. With two exceptions, they are basically realistic in style and are mostly about relationships. The eleven essays focus on Art (predominantly painting and poetry), exploring the following range of topics in terms of their relationship to Art: authenticity, materiality, the canon, success and failure, rhyme, originality, ekphrasis, science, logic, beauty, and mystification.

Over the past several years, since the mid-2010s, America and Americans have gone through astonishing, unprecedented political, geopolitical, societal, and cultural changes. BLM, Antifa, transgenders, diversity equity inclusion, Trump derangement syndrome, rigged elections, an "insurrection," COVID crackdowns, vaccine mandates, assaults on free speech, political persecutions and prosecutions, mainstream media propaganda, the merger of state and corporate power, and reckless involvement in foreign wars that threaten to launch World War III.These events raise serious doubts about the sanity of the U.S. and Western elites who are driving the changes, and they point to the precipitous decline of America and its "Empire of Lies," as Vladimir Putin has labeled it.Chicago-based freelance educational writer and political commentator A.J. Smuskiewicz has carefully observed it all. He has evaluated, re-evaluated, and documented his evolving perspectives on the national and international chaos in this collection of essays, compiled from his published works during the momentous period of 2014 to 2024. The essays offer his unique, distinctly personal insights on the profound issues of the day (and some not-so-profound issues), with an unusual, highly individualistic mix of Right and Left ideas, of conservative, libertarian, and revolutionary radical views.Smuskiewicz compiled this collection as America was in the midst of another wild and weird election season-with one candidate facing possible imprisonment, a second candidate apparently struggling with dementia, and a third candidate posing a threat to both. Where could America and the world be headed? These essays will help to give you the background knowledge and frame of reference you need to understand and deal with whatever the hell is going to happen in this Empire of Lies.
