Slitherings in Sleaufort introduces the reader to Bixie Lee Biddle. She was living a boring life, with a boring job, in a boring town-with no expectation of things changing. Plod, plod one foot in front of the other, day by day until, well until....Then she received a letter from a Sleaufort lawyer telling her that she had inherited a house from her aunt. The aunt lived in Sleaufort-a town with endless sunshine and a nearby beach. So fun!In a blink of an eye, Bixie had packed for the trip, stored all the excess stuff, sublet her apartment and quit her job at the medical research facility. She was gone. She knew that she could get a county job in Sleaufort, because her brother was important in local politics. She was so wrong. The tides had changed and her brother' party was out of favor. She did get a job with the county-custodian at the courthouse. So special. The job included toilet cleaning, scraping off bird poop from the courthouse steps, swabbing up floods on the floors from the drink machine malfunctioning. Also, the courthouse was very busy because of the pig farm controversy.Bixie slowly adapted to her new job duties. Friendships grew, and there was always friction with the county managers. However, much of the time they were engrossed in their grownup hobbies of mail-order porno and afternoon massages. The courthouse has many interesting people, with many interesting secrets. Bixie, being a thorough cleaner, read the trash in the cans to keep herself informed. So many marital flummoxes-should the husband break up with the stripper girlfriend, should the single woman ask for child support or hold out for the more lucrative blackmail option?Bixie was instrumental in uncovering the embezzling by the courthouse head, Miss Thomas. No good deed goes unrewarded. After Miss Thomas "left", Bixie was given the additional housekeeping chores of cleaning all of Miss Thomas' property. Some surprises were found; there was a mummified dog in the closet and all kinds of Thomas relatives appeared. However, not everything was work, work. Bixie made connections with several hunky men who were around. There was a yummy Spanish teacher, gone before his time, cooked in a tanning bed, and another guy bit the dust, but he was too skanky for Bixie, but he had his following. One of the girls was the barely legal neighbor of Bixie. He was greatly mourned. There was always light-hearted entertainment among the courthouse folks. Dick Dave (with breeches hanging low) and Dolly Thorne (reeking of rose perfume) were forever lovers, until they weren't. The temps added their own flair of drama, The policeman, one who never bathed, one who took a pig to the prom, and the third who did all the work were always up to something. Of course, Jade, owner of a marital aide shop, was Bixie's go to best friend. And the calories available. Fats fried in grease and then coated with sugar and maple syrup. Calorie count was 34.Life would have been almost perfect, except for two things: the dead bodies and the reasons they were dead. We all know if we find one roach, there are more in the woodwork. So the appearance of more Thomases, not a good sign. The adventures of Bixie continue in the next 7 books and the good news is, as of now, Bixie is still alive.

Ever want to be a doctor or wonder how a physician feels about healthcare? Follow one man's journey through medical training and his reflections on the process.Less Than Human is a physician's experience and 'insider perspective' into the abusive and corrupt academic, political and legal systems one navigates to succeed in medicine. There is a dehumanizing aspect of medicine/healthcare for both patients and doctors. Our academic system treats students and eventual medical residents as a disposable exploitable commodity and patients as throughput objects.Unfortunately, healthcare focus is now taken off the patient and instead diverted to total government submission under the mantra of 'Compliance'. Subservience to government mandates override patient care.Besides bone crushing debt imposed by the higher education system, medicine is practiced under heavy-handed political, litigious and media influence; this book offers insight and critique of the American political, media and legal systems which undermine the Doctor-Patient relationship. This book was initially self-published in 2015 to help improve medical care in this country, this second edition is culled to be more focused and concise, yet still clearly describe deficiencies and offer solutions. Direct common-sense changes (to this day not practiced) are proposed to aright a failed system of academia, healthcare and the politics that controls them. Many of the issues presented in this book weigh heavily on doctors, but also creep into many aspects of our society. The greatest coup in healthcare is propaganda convincing people to mistrust their doctors' and have blind faith in politicians.

Government Can Deliver presents a framework for government agency performance improvement designed to change an inefficient culture and drive operational excellence. It outlines how government leaders can drive such change, and most importantly, it presents a proven approach for creating an environment that will affect positive change. This framework, a set of practical attributes and implementable best practices tailored for government agencies, is based on real-world experiences in which government did deliver. There are examples in each chapter of agencies that implemented elements of this framework and the resulting impact on agencies' operational performance. And while mainly using examples from large federal government agencies, this book can aid those in all levels of government and differing agency sizes. In writing this book, Richard endeavored to create a practical guide on transforming government agencies that can benefit all readers-whether you have made government service your life, study government as an academician or student, or are simply a concerned citizen. After establishing the need for improved government operations , the book presents attributes and best practices for eight solution functions. When properly addressed, each of these functions can, individually and collectively, significantly improve an agency's performance. The examples and arguments can help agency leaders justify implementing the necessary attributes and best practices to improve their agency's performance. The final chapter provides recommendations on how a government agency can develop a transformation plan to incrementally implement the attributes and best practices for each of these eight functions.Richard has seen first-hand the amazing things government agencies can accomplish when they have experienced, capable leaders, adopt best practices tailored for government, and appropriately leverage technology to support improved operations. Change is hard, but through government leaders' and employees' efforts focused on implementing the right changes, agencies can significantly improve their operational performance. Under the right conditions, magic can and does happen.

Scientific advances have always impacted every phase of human life, but the impacts and changes in the past few years have been more marked and far more astonishing than at any other time in history. We have become accepting of those events and, as a result, the world we know is unlike the one known by our forefathers. This book explores some of those advances and changes, and the author shares information about events, discoveries, and incidents that have impacted education, government, religion, medicine, scientific advances, and -- of course -- our personal lives. This was done by exploring what is known about robots, ghosts, extrasensory perceptions, and life after death and the resultant changes man has encountered.

The Chief Executive Officer of a large private corporation has the Board of Director votes to thwart a buyout/takeover bid from a corporate raider. However, several members of the BOD will stop at nothing to ensure the bid is successful, including hiring assassins to kill the CEO to eliminate his deciding, negative votes. If the CEO is absent from the board meeting, the corporate raider will be successful.Complications arise when the young CEO is temporarily incapacitated by an automobile accident caused by his own immaturity and recklessness. To provide the necessary negative votes and protect the corporation from the raider, its astute Chief Operating Officer, governed by his 25+ years of loyal and significant service, covertly hires a look-alike actor to pose as the CEO. The impostor has to successfully deceive the CEO's BOD members, staff, friends, acquaintances, and a TV-viewing audience for at least two months. To further the deception, a young attractive actress is hired to pose as the impostor's platonic girlfriend.Therein lies the plot. The impostor plays his role so well that there are a number of attempts to kill him, thinking that he is the real CEO. What follows are multiple, ruthless attempts to kill the CEO impostor to ensure the corporate raider's success. The impostor's life is further jeopardized by an avenging ex-convict who blames the CEO for the death of his sister.Throughout all the dangers the impostor must not break character. His mission remains the same: Deception without Detection. "No matter what happens, no one must know!"This fast-paced story takes place across many venues: the Big Sur coastal area; the snow-covered mountains of Utah; a cabin in the Adirondacks; mega-yacht moorings at St. Tropez, Nice, and Monaco along the French Riviera; a New York City horse-drawn carriage ride; a rustic cabin in Sleepy Hollow, New York; a retirement village in Arkansas; a movie premiere; a late-night TV show; and corporate guest lodges in California, 1000 Islands, and Florida. The theme of the Imperiled Impostor is the conflict between good and evil, with this additional consideration and question from a Machiavellian treatise: "does the end justify the means". In the story, does deceit and deception justify the final "good" result? The story also depicts the redemption of a gifted and capable person who had been wasting his life in self-indulgence and self-pity.

A story inspired by each of his muses rounds out the picture But what about his wife? Was Blake right in stating that a wife is not a muse? In the final section the author resolves this issue to his own satisfaction.

This is a book about survival. It is a book about a 21 year old Army Scout pilot shot down during the Vietnam War on a Scout mission well inside North Vietnamese controlled territory in Cambodia. He along with his two crew members, his Observer and his Door Gunner, were shot down on 10 March 1971.They were hit by a B-40 Rocket Propelled Grenade or an SA-7 missile. The pilot, WO1 Craig (Jeff) Houser immediately lost engine power and then realized he had no cyclic control. The burning aircraft passed over a river and crashed into the trees above the riverbank, exploded on impact, and then fell into the river and sank.He never saw his two crew members: Observer SP4 Robert T. Kiser or Door Gunner Sgt. Curtis R. Smoot again. After almost drowning, Houser managed to somehow get out of the wreckage of the aircraft on the bottom of the river and swim to the river bank. This was then the beginning of what turned out to be four days of Escape and Evasion. He was burned and blinded (totally blinded in one eye and loss of most of his vision in the other) by the crash. Most of his survival equipment was now on the bottom of the river. He had no food, no medicine, and no water. It was now the dry season in this area of Southeast Asia and other than the river he crashed in, all the intermittent streams and creeks were dried up.First he had to keep from being captured, that was the primary goal.It is absolutely a true story of survival against all odds.

Are we in a simulation? That's a question Dax Sky often asked himself. Not surprising given he designs simulations, creating alternate realities indistinguishable from the real world. It is the 24th century and Dax lives in the former United States of America, ruled by China. He works for a government agency called SISAR that creates alternate reality simulations of the past and future. His wife, Mae, is an engineer at Photonviz Corporation, a company that builds devices located throughout the solar system that collect photons reflected from deep space originally emitted from Earth. The photons record every event that occurred in Earth's history. SISAR uses the photon data to create the historical simulations used as the basis for its alternate history simulations. But Dax's life is torn apart when he returns from an expedition to the ruins of eastern North America to discover Mae, missing. Taken from his world by a man who looks like him.Dax's search for Mae will uncover incredible truths. But he must first learn the purpose of two mysterious, otherworldly objects whose origin trace back to the time of Christ's birth. The objects belonged to a strange magus who saved the infant Christ from being killed by the Romans in the Slaughter of the Innocents. They were discovered by archeologists in Costa Rica, in the 21st century, and may be connected to a simulation Dax created-a world inexplicably entwined with his own reality. The novel is hard science fiction and alternate history fiction, in the tradition of books by authors like Philip K. Dick. It is also an adventure, mystery and time travel novel like classic science fiction books written by Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. Themes explored by modern-day writers, including Stephen King, David Mitchell and Blake Crouch, are reimagined in The Designer. The Designer explores the nature of reality. And how myth and religion, theoretical and speculative physics, metaphysics and philosophy can come together to provide possible answers to the fundamental questions about the universe that have vexed human beings for millennia.

Growing up in an Italian-American household was special. It was particularly memorable for a boy who was given way too much freedom by his grandparents, Giuseppe and Maria, who treated him like a young Italian prince. There were fun and escapades galore, many of which could have ended in jail time for the young prince and his friends had it not been for sheer luck and Grandma's influence. Add to the mixture, a slightly gritty, multicultural city on the banks of Lake Erie as well as the chance association with rare and eccentric people, young and old, all who teamed up to make the total experience magical. Memories of those days, long past, unfold taking the reader back to a time when ethnic families welcomed friends to Sunday meals while their kids played outside away from technology occupied instead with breaking windows, setting off incendiary devices, pelting each other with slingshots and formulating gang fights. Mangia e mille grazie!!!
