Black Like That is a collection of poems about my experience as a Black woman in America. It reviews what I have learned from living in this skin, on this land, and all the ancestry that has followed me to keep me covered. It is an invitation to my folk to find themselves in these stories and for those who cannot ascribe to these identities, I invite you to consider another perspective. Black Like That in all of its iterations is an offering from all the voices in mine that had no space to speak.

Most of the fifteen men and one woman chronicled in this work did not achieve the pinnacle of the hopes they held dear and may be looked upon as mere anecdotes in the larger scheme of history and the era in which they lived. But, for their very real everyday lives they advanced the possibilities of the world to which they were born. What was unapparent at the time, but manifest later, was that their attempts, their labors for something better, benefited the community in which they lived even without their understanding and even if it did not elevate substantially their own lives. Progress, whether personal or larger, is incremental. What often seems just a moment in time in historical review, is often the movement of change on a grander scale. Such it was for the men who brought their wealth, whether great or small, and their experiences back with them from the frozen north to the small town along the shores of the Stillaguamish River where they lived out their days.
Resistance takes many shapes. For Indians of Southern California it ranged from escape when possible to violence and assassination when forced. Acts of civil disobedience incorporated blocking roads to blocking legislation. They lobbied in the halls of Congress and argued in courtrooms while they struggled to secure their lands, natural resources and respect for themselves and their way of life. Whether with guns or law books they fought for the rights guaranteed through treaties which were so callously discarded by indifferent or hostile federal and state governments. However, they never surrendered their beliefs or their homes easily to the Euro-American invaders of their land. Extensive sections of this abridged second edition appeared earlier in the book, This War is for a Whole Life: The Culture of Resistance Among Indians of Southern California, 1850-1966, published in 2012 by Ushkana Press of Banning, California. New information has been added to certain key figures in the book. This work follows the path of leadership, resistance and adaptation that provided direction during times of confusion, showed strength when outside forces seemed overwhelming and inspired hope when days seemed darkest. Such dark days gave rise to the important Mission Indian Federation which is the focus of this consolidated edition.

When they approach the cage with exotic birds, Elsa gets distracted and separated from the group when she hears a macaw complaining about another bird, who took advantage of an oversight, and bit his apple that a boy threw into the cage. The macaw is very frustrated because nobody wants to tell him who bit his apple, and it seems that they want to give him a hard time and make fun of him. Elsa is fascinated listening to the birds discuss among themselves and how they try to solve their problems.
