Before computers, we wrote letters. My mother's letters were like little novellas, several pages long. Her family members and friends loved to get her "books." Letters from mom were heartfelt and brought tears of love. As her pen moved passionately across the pages, sometimes her clear, blue eyes would well up. Letters were her release. They were her way of expressing herself in ways she could not voice. Occasionally, she would write letters to people out of anger and then tear them up. These could have been to politicians, relatives, and those are the ones I knew about. She would express her heart's desire, open up her soul, and pour out her thoughts. While I did not have the beautiful penmanship of my mother, I learned that the pen was my power. Some of my letters were releases which I destroyed. At age 15, I even wrote one about the need for a doctor in our little town. The letter and story was published in the newspaper. As a writer and a poet, I write as if my words are letters to the world, perhaps to express the desires of my heart. Other times I write to simply write. When we do express our desires within our heart this has a way of stirring up thoughts and even action plans to make things happen. They could be acceptances of things that can't be changed, but often are steps toward courage to make something happen. I posed this question and requested to others: What is the desire in your heart? This is my challenge to you. I would like to read about the desires in your heart in the "Dear Heart" anthology of letters, poetry, art, photography, and whatever ways helps you express your passion. There was a caveat to this. In honor of my mother, the expressions were to be sent to me via good old fashioned snail mail. Now, it is my pleasure to bring to you these beautiful heartfelt responses via Dear Heart. You may have wondered why Islam shares so many similarities with Christianity (Jesus is even mentioned in the Quran). Or perhaps you have challenged your imam friend to read the Bible if you are able to read the Quran. Perhaps, like me, you find it difficult to convince your Muslim friends that the Bible is not corrupt. This left me wondering why the biblical, historical, and systematic evidence is not convincing to many Muslims. Then it struck me: the Quran is the sole authority for the majority of Muslims. Nevertheless, the Quran is replete with biblical references and quotations. I decided to show my Muslim friend that the Quran quoted more than 7,000 Bible verses, some verbatim and many by the meaning. In this edition, there are quick references on the side of the main biblical text of the four Gospels that indicate where the Quran has quoted.

In 1976, Nigel Foster had no idea he would attempt to circumnavigate Iceland by kayak the following year. A chance meeting with a well-known expedition kayaker in the Scottish Isles changed all that. While others scoffed, he made plans, using the technology of the day: calling people on rotary dial telephones, visiting public libraries, consulting travel agents, folding letters into envelopes to be stamped and carried to the mail box. Slowly, as Foster learned about Iceland, he began to realize the difficulties ahead.Nobody had circled Iceland by kayak before. So, was it a foolhardy escapade? Possibly, but Foster describes how his earlier adventures made him optimistic. When the small team he first envisions dwindles to two, he has misgivings, but the project seems to take on an energy beyond his control. In June of 1977, he finds himself with Geoff Hunter on the heaving deck of a ferry bound for Iceland with snow dashed mountains rising before them.Despite contrasting personalities, Foster and Hunter have compatible goals. Together, they enrich their adventure, forgoing speed of travel to better experience Iceland. Icelanders welcome them with touching generosity. Their encounters are often outright hilarious. Ashore, the two hike up steaming volcanic peaks, not missing the opportunity to bask in mountain hot springs, or in contrast explore glaciers and ice-filled lakes. They camp on black sand beaches, eat seagulls and puffins, and deal with malfunctioning gear. Afloat, it is the moody ocean that pervades all, with its heaving shore-breaks and numbing chill. Here are towering cliffs, cacophonous seabird colonies, whales, driftwood logs from Siberia, and storm-whipped islands. As they forge ahead, their story becomes interwoven with threads, historical and geological, that enrich the narrative, making it a valuable resource for any traveler to Iceland. This is a story of Iceland as experienced in the 1970s. It reveals the atmosphere and character of the land and people at that time. There is a freshness untouched by high tech, which makes the recounting of this major accomplishment, the first circumnavigation of Iceland by kayak, a delight to read.

The book looks at the traditional song Nhemamusasa, a mbira song commonly sung in Zimbabwe. It has been performed by many groups in the country of origin and many parts of the world. Fortunate Hove explores the traditional elements of the song that makes it authentically Zimbabwean and how it ties in with patterns of speech used in Shona folklore. The song brings together ancient practices of conflict resolution as well as defining gender roles in a Shona society. The period of the song coincided with a time of unrest in the country during the period of Mfecane when many Nguni regiments from Zululand broke away from Shaka, moving northwards into neighboring countries where they carried out Zulu military-style raids and abductions. The critique is a convergence of history, feminism, expressions of conflict resolution, and marriage in Shona culture.

"El final de la década de los ochenta coincide con el último curso de los estudios universitarios de la protagonista de esta historia. El Madrid de la movida es pues el escenario donde todo sucede a partir del axioma de la libertad. Y no sólo eso, sino que además, la vida parece ser fácil y divertida, y el éxito personal está casi asegurado. No obstante, ella camina de la mano de la frustración y de la melancolía. ¿Por qué no consigue alcanzar sus metas? ¿En qué consiste el éxito? ¿Quiénes tienen acceso a él? The Aces Anthology presents short stories and poems from 25 writers, focusing on Northern Nevada. Some have written as many as 40 or 50 books, while others are making their debut in this volume. Bestselling and award-winning authors are featured side-by-side with newcomers. Among the entries, Ken Sutherland's debut story "SWOOP!" was selected as one of three finalists for the prestigious John Steinbeck Award. Whether traditionally or independently published, what these stories have in common is a passion for writing and a love of the singular swath of land that stretches from Lake Tahoe west to Ely and Elko: a land of majestic mountains, painted deserts, bustling cities, and ghost towns. Many have chosen to set their stories in this region, whether in the present day, the recent past, or in the colorful era of the Old West. In the pages of this anthology, you'll read stories of faerie creatures, intrepid ghost hunters, a singing cowboy, aliens, and pioneers. You'll find murder mysteries, touching stories of love and loss, creative poetry, a touch of horror, and a few unexpected twists. Many of the authors included in this work are also showcased on a website dedicated to displaying and promoting their works: ACES of Northern Nevada. ACES (the Authors' Collective e-Shop) is an online hub set up like a virtual bookstore and designed to introduce local authors to readers from across the region and beyond. As an outgrowth of the ACES initiative, this anthology shares that purpose. You can visit the ACES website at acesofnorthernnevada.com.
