Sivagnana Botham of Meykanda Deva by J.M Nallaswami Pillai was first published in 1895.The system of Hindu Philosophy which is expounded in the following pages, and its name will be altogether new to many an English educated Hindu who is content to learn his religion and philosophy from English books and translations and from such scraps as turn up in newspapers and magazines and from such scraps as turn up in newspapers and magazines. The word means True End, and as used in logic, it means the proposition or theory proved as distinguished from the proposition or theory refuted, which becomes the Purvapaksham. The Saiva Philosophy is so called as it establishes the True End or the only Truth and all other systems are merely Purvapakshams. The system is based primarily on the Saiva Agamas. But the authority of the Vedas is equally accepted and the system is then called Vedanta Philosophy or Vedanta Siddhantha Philosophy or Vaithika Saiva Philosophy.

THIRUVARUTPAYAN OF UMAPATHI SIVACHARYATranslated with Notes and Introduction by J. M. Nallaswami Pillai first published in 1896.The Vedas and the Sivagamas in Sanskrit and the Tirumurais and the Siddhanta Sastras in Tamil are the principal scriptures of Saiva Siddhanta. The four authors of the first eight of the Twelve Tirumurais are called the Samaya Acharyas. They are St. Tirugnana Sambandar, St. Tirunavkkarasar, St. Sundaramurthi, and St. Manikkavachakar. The hymns of the first three are generally known as Thevaram, and those of the last as Tiruvachakam. These living hymns of the Samaya Acharyas which are well-known for their intensity of devotion and spiritual uplift, and for their matchless beauty of expression contain also all the fundamental ideas of Saiva Siddhanta. The tenth Tirumurai viz., Tirumantiram by St. Tirumular, which was composed some time before the 6th century A. D. , gives the essence of the Sivagamas, and a more or less systematic account of the Saiva Siddhanta Philosophy.

I know nothing of Saiva Siddhanta beyond what I have leamt from Swami Vedachalam, but if it means, as he says, opposition to Vedantist Pantheism with its doctrines that all is one and all is illusion, it has my heartiest sympathy. For I have long thought monism as harmful socially as it is scientifically groundless, and the widespread acceptance it has won in India seems to be a clue to much of the political history of the country. If the peoples of India can be persuaded that the truth of speculations also must be tested by their bearing upon life, the progress of India will be much accelerated.
