A Man of Means is one of the best books of PG Wodehouse and it is a classic of English humour. The books has this passage: "When a seed-merchant of cautious disposition and an eye to the main chance receives from an eminent firm of jam-manufacturers an extremely large order for clover-seed, his emotions are mixed. Joy may be said to predominate, but with the joy comes also uncertainty. Are these people, he asks himself, proposing to set up as farmers of a large scale, or do they merely want the seed to give verisimilitude to their otherwise bald and unconvincing raspberry jam? On the solution of this problem depends the important matter of price, for, obviously, you can charge a fraudulent jam disseminator in a manner which an honest farmer would resent."

Peking Dust is 19th and 20th Century Chinese history text that deals with the time leading up to and including the First World War (World War One). It contains this passage: "Two classes of books are written about China by two classes of people. There are books written by people who have spent the night in China, as it were, superficial and amusing, full of the tinkling of temple bells; and there are other books written by people who have spent years in China and who know it well,--ponderous books, full of absolute information, heavy and unreadable. Books of the first class get one nowhere. They are delightful and entertaining, but one feels their irresponsible authorship. Books of the second class get one nowhere, for one cannot read them; they are too didactic and dull. The only people who might read them do not read them, for they also are possessed of deep, fundamental knowledge of China, and their views agree in no slightest particular with the views set forth by the learned scholars and theorists. This book falls into neither of these two classes, except perhaps in the irresponsibility of its author. It is compounded of gossip,--the flying gossip or dust of Peking. Take it lightly; blow off such dust as may happen to stick to you. For authentic information turn to the heavy volumes written by the acknowledged students of international politics." ELLEN N. LA MOTTE.

If you strip Stoicism of its paradoxes and its wilful misuse of language, what is left is simply the moral philosophy of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, dashed with the physics of Heraclitus. Stoicism was not so much a new doctrine as the form under which the old Greek philosophy finally presented itself to the world at large. It owed its popularity in some measure to its extravagance. A great deal might be said about Stoicism as a religion and about the part it played in the formation of Christianity but these subjects were excluded by the plan of this volume which was to present a sketch of the Stoic doctrine based on the original authorities. The Dhammapada is a collection of sayings of the Buddha in verse form and one of the most widely read and best known Buddhist scriptures. The original version of the Dhammapada is in the Khuddaka Nikaya, a division of the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. The Buddhist scholar and commentator Buddhaghosa explains that each saying recorded in the collection was made on a different occasion in response to a unique situation that had arisen in the life of the Buddha and his monastic community. His translation of the commentary, the Dhammapada Atthakatha, presents the details of these events and is a rich source of legend for the life and times of the Buddha

The Soul of Man Under Socialism is a famous and classic poitical science essay by Oscare Wilde that contains this passage: "The chief advantage that would result from the establishment of Socialism is, undoubtedly, the fact that Socialism would relieve us from that sordid necessity of living for others which, in the present condition of things, presses so hardly upon almost everybody. In fact, scarcely anyone at all escapes."

THIS little self-help volume (the result of meditation and experience) is not intended as an exhaustive treatise on the much-written-upon subject of the power of thought. It is suggestive rather than explanatory, its object being to stimulate men and women to the discovery and perception of the truth that--"They themselves are makers of themselves."By virtue of the thoughts, which they choose and encourage; that mind is the master-weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance, and that, as they may have hitherto woven in ignorance and pain they may now weave in enlightenment and happiness.

Jack London (1876-1916), was an American author and a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction. He was one of the first Americans to make a lucrative career exclusively from writing. London was self-educated. He taught himself in the public library, mainly just by reading books. In 1898, he began struggling seriously to break into print, a struggle memorably described in his novel, Martin Eden (1909). Jack London was fortunate in the timing of his writing career. He started just as new printing technologies enabled lower-cost production of magazines. This resulted in a boom in popular magazines aimed at a wide public, and a strong market for short fiction. In 1900, he made $2,500 in writing, the equivalent of about $75,000 today. His career was well under way. Among his famous works are: Children of the Frost (1902), The Call of the Wild (1903), The Sea Wolf (1904), The Game (1905), White Fang (1906), The Road (1907), Before Adam (1907), Adventure (1911), and The Scarlet Plague (1912).

Los Angeles genealogist Ella Graepenteck is used to surprises. Clients lie, and old documents can reveal uncomfortable information. Stumbling across a dead body, though, is a more surprising experience than usual, and it leads Ella into a dangerous web of secrets and suspicions going back many generations. To find her way out, she will need all her professional skills, the help of eccentric relatives, and the trust of a detective with intriguing hazel eyes.It starts with a new client's fairly ordinary request. She wants to know who her grandmother's father was. Ella makes a routine appointment to look at some 1920s movie memorabilia and lands in the middle of a murder investigation. It seems like a random piece of bad luck, so she tries to keep her focus on her work, but connections start to appear between the murder and Ella's research. The lead investigator considers Ella's discoveries mostly a nuisance, or an attempt to deflect suspicion from herself, but his partner, Detective Cormac Roth, is more open to her ideas. He starts to think she may actually have a knack for investigative work. Between his deductive skills and hers, they might be able to solve this perplexing crime. It could even be the beginning of a long and productive partnership, if her problematic family doesn't get in the way.

Calling somebody a sinner or a hypocrite, or calling someone a lame or blind, or one-eyed, or giving him a nickname containing a reference to some defect or flaw in him/her, or his parents, or in his family, or giving such a nickname to a person, or a family, or a community, or a group, which may bring disapproval or disgrace on it. Only those nicknames have been made an exception from this Command, which though offensive, are not intended to disapprove of the persons concerned, but they instead serve as a mark of recognition for them. If there are several men with the same name and a particular man among them may be recognized only by a particular title or nickname of his, the title or nickname can be used, even though the title by itself may be offensive. For instance, if there are several men called Abdullah, and one of them is blind, he may be called Abdullah the blind, only for recognition purposes. Those titles also are not a part of this Command, which though offensive, are in fact, given out of love and the people who are called by those titles themselves approve of them, like Abu Hurairah (father of the kitten).
