"Tum Tum was a jolly elephant. I shall tell you that much at the start of this story, so you will not have to be guessing as to who Tum Tum was. Tum Tum was the jolliest elephant in the circus, but before that he was the jolliest elephant in the woods or jungle. In fact, Tum Tum was nearly always happy and jolly, and, though he had many troubles, in all the adventures that happened to him, still, he always tried to be good-natured over them. So I am going to tell you all about Tum Tum, and the wonderful things that happened to him. "

  • av John Millington Synge
    319,-

Edmund John Millington Synge (16 April 1871 - 24 March 1909) was an Irish playwright, poet, writer, collector of folklore, and a key figure in the Irish Literary Revival. His best known play The Playboy of the Western World was poorly received, due to its bleak ending, depiction of Irish peasants, and idealisation of parricide, leading to hostile audience reactions and riots in Dublin during its opening run at Abbey Theatre, Dublin, which he had co-founded with W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory. His other major works include "In the Shadow of the Glen" (1903), "Riders to the Sea" (1904), "The Well of the Saints" (1905), and "The Tinker''s Wedding" (1909).

Ernest Bramah (1868-1942) was an English author of considerable repute in his day. In total Bramah published 21 books and numerous short stories and features. His humorous works were ranked with Jerome K Jerome, and W. W. Jacobs; his detective stories with Conan Doyle; his politico-science fiction with H. G. Wells and his supernatural stories with Algernon Blackwood. George Orwell acknowledged that Bramah''s book What Might Have Been (1907) influenced his seminal Nineteen Eighty-Four (1948). Bramah, the creator of the immortal Kai Lung and Max Carrados, was a recluse who refused to allow his public even the slightest glimpse of his private life - secrecy perhaps only matched by E. W. Hornung, the creator of Raffles, and today, J. D. Salinger.

"Last night I drew all night. I copied the images from the textbook and then I drew them again freehand-I made them move on the page, lengthened the lines and darkened the centers."The tree, the river, the old textbook-a triptych with shifting borders hangs in a place where dreams and memories intersect. Omission and loss haunt those who live here, suspended as they are in an endless struggle to connect. Contracting and expanding as it progresses, the narrative of their existence ever-circles around a shrouded core.

  • av Xenophon
    285,-

Xenophon (431-355 BC), son of Gryllus, of the deme Erchia of Athens, was a soldier, mercenary and an admirer of Socrates. He is known for his writings on the history of his own times, the sayings of Socrates, and the life of Greece. He participated in the expedition led by Cyrus the Younger against his older brother, the emperor Artaxerxes II of Persia, in 401 BC. His record of the entire expedition against the Persians and the journey home was titled Anabasis (The Expedition or The March Up Country). He was later exiled from Athens, most likely because he fought under the Spartan king Agesilaus against Athens at Coronea. The Spartans gave him property at Scillus, near Olympia in Elis, where he composed the Anabasis. His writings are often read by beginning students of the Greek language. His Hellenica is a major primary source for events in Greece from 411 to 362 BC, and his Socratic writings, preserved complete, are the only surviving representatives of the genre of Sokratikoi logoi other than the dialogues of Plato.

  • av Elinor Glyn
    275,-

Elinor Glyn (1864-1943), born Elinor Sutherland, was an English novelist and scriptwriter who pioneered massmarket women''s erotic fiction. She coined the use of It as a euphemism for sexuality, or sex appeal. Elinor was schooled by her grandmother (a minor French aristocrat) which gave her an entrée into aristocratic circles on her return to Europe and led her to be considered an authority on style and breeding when she worked in Hollywood where she promoted the concept of the vamp. She was the celebrated author of early 20th century bestsellers as It, Three Weeks, Beyond the Rocks, and other novels which were then considered quite racy, as tame as they might seem now. She was a scriptwriter for the silent movie industry and had a brief career as one of the earliest female directors. Her other works include: The Visits of Elizabeth (1900), The Reflections of Ambrosine (1902), The Damsel and the Sage (1903), Elizabeth Visits America (1909), Halcyone (1912), The Point of View (1913), The Man and the Moment (1914), and Man and Maid (1922).

  • av Angela Brazil
    395,-

Angela Brazil (1868-1947) was the first of the British writers of "modern" School Girls'' Stories genre - written from the characters'' point of view. Along with her sister Amy, Angela then studied at Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. She was quite late in taking up writing, developing a strong interest in Welsh mythology, and at first wrote a few magazine articles on mythology and nature. It was possibly thanks to her sister Amy that she finally began work on a novel at the age of 35. Exceptionally with respect to many of her contemporaries writing in this vein, Brazil did not write any books in a series - each stood on its own with different characters every time. These were considered to deal accurately and sympathetically with the highs and lows in the lives of middle-class schoolgirls, including the tangle of emotional friendships. Her works include: The New Girl at St. Chad''s (1911), For the Sake of the School (1915), The Luckiest Girl in the School (1916) and The Jolliest School of All (1922).
