El estudio de las técnicas de cuchillo del bujutsu/budo japones proviene de siglos atrás. El Tanto Jutsu estaba a medio camino entre ser una disciplina propia y un complemento del programa de la escuela. Era frecuente que las escuelas Koryu reservasen una parte de su programa para el estudio codificado del Tanto Jutsu. El Tanto formaba parte del equipamiento de los guerreros feudales en Japón, y como comentaremos más adelante en este estudio, el manejo y ocultación de esta arma tenía ciertas peculiaridades debido a su pequeño tamaño, en comparación con el Kodachi o la Katana. Tanto jutsu no hace referencia únicamente a las formas de defensa ante una agresión con arma cortante (tanto dori), sino también al manejo y perfeccionamiento para adquirir destreza en su uso para atacar en caso de necesidad (uso militar, policial, espionaje etc). En este libro hemos tratado varios aspectos que se hacen necesarios para comprender la historia, tradición, evolución y manejo del tanto, con dos perspectivas bien diferenciadas; las técnicas del pasado y las técnicas actuales. En las técnicas del pasado mostramos las diferentes formas clásicas que tenían las escuelas tradicionales para solventar diferentes situaciones ante ataques de tanto. Mientras en el capítulo de técnicas actuales hemos desarrollado secuencias técnicas que se usan hoy en día en varios programas de defensa policial o militar. Hemos añadido un capítulo de lesiones anatómicas producidas por el tanto, no solo desde el objetivo del daño infringido sino también del objetivo de donde deben ir los cortes o las estocadas.
