In the first half of the twentieth century, urban design under the influence of European dictatorships not only served to support the rulers in their own country, but also to gain the recognition of the democratic states. After the National Socialist regime came to power in Germany, urban design increasingly became the trump card in the competition amongst the large dictatorships in Europe - almost as in the time of absolutism. Irrespective of all conflicts and political orientations, there was an intense exchange of ideas amongst the states in Europe. It is therefore not adequate to make an assessment just from the point of view of the dictatorships. The overarching view helps to understand the special characteristics of each dictatorship and also disproves some simplified interpretations of their respective approaches to urban design. That is not just of historic interest; the discussion of the issue of dictatorships is always also an expression of our social condition, our commemorative culture, our ability to recognize old and new forms of dictatorship - even today! The book discusses the state of research into urban design under five dictatorships during the first half of the twentieth century, and presents new research results based on examples.

Wie und weshalb wurde aus dem eigentlich politikfernen theoretischen Physiker Andrej Sacharow (1921¿1989), allgemein anerkannter Vater der sowjetischen Wasserstoffbombe, ein Vorkämpfer für Menschenrechte und der erste Friedensnobelpreisträger Russlands? Dies ist die erste Biografie, die Sacharow als Physiker und Persönlichkeit des öffentlichen Lebens gleichermaßen gerecht wird. Das Buch stützt sich auf bislang der Öffentlichkeit unzugängliche Dokumente sowie auf Auskünfte von zahlreichen Zeit- und Augenzeugen, die Sacharow als Studenten, Physiker und Menschenrechtsverteidiger, vom beruflichen und politisch-gesellschaftlichen Tätigkeitsbereich und privaten Umfeld her persönlich kannten. Wie unlängst freigegebene Dokumente belegen, war der Umbruch in Sacharows Leben durch seine Berufsbelange bedingt, insbesondere als beide Supermächte ihr Raketenabwehrsystem aufzubauen begannen. Sacharows Insider-Kenntnisse über die Vorgehensart auf den oberen sowjetischen Führungsebenen bestärkten ihn in seiner Überzeugung, die Zielsetzungen Frieden, Fortschritt, Menschenrechte seien untrennbar miteinander verknüpft. Sacharows kompromisslos freies, unabhängiges Denken und Fühlen kommt in seiner Hoffnung zum Ausdruck, dass in Zukunft wissenschaftliche Denkweiseund religiöses Empfinden eine tiefgründige Synthese eingehen werden.

Der Architekt Rudolf Olgiati ist durch die Verzahnung traditioneller Elemente mit der Architektur der Moderne Vorbild für zeitgenössische Architekten wie Peter Märkli. In den letzten Jahren hat sein Werk zunehmend Beachtung erfahren. Rudolf Olgiati (1910 bis 1995) entwickelte unter dem Einfluss von Le Corbusier, bei gleichzeitiger Rückbesinnung auf eine dem traditionellen Bauen verpflichtete Architektur, in den 1950er- und 60er-Jahren eine eigene, prägnante Architektur, die weit über Graubünden, seinen zentralen Wirkungsort, hinaus Aufmerksamkeit erzielte. In seiner Bauten kombinierte er alte mit neuen Elementen und übersetzte traditionelle Formen wir beispielsweise das trichterförmige Fenster oder die bogenförmige Überwölbungen in eine radikal zeitgenössische Sprache. Der Reprint der Originalausgabe, der 1977 anlässlich einer Ausstellung herausgegebenen Monografie zum Gesamtwerk, macht dieses wichtige Dokument nun endlich wieder lieferbar. Er enthält zudem, als Faltblatt eingelegt, die Dokumentation der nach 1977 realisierten Bauten, die die Übersicht zu Rudolf Olgiatis Werk vervollständigt.
