The main focus is on the analytic counterpart of these problems, which amounts to computing projections onto subspaces of a Hilbert space of p x 1 vector valued functions with an inner product that is defined in terms of the p x p matrix valued spectral density of the process.

  • - New Trends and Open Problems

While much attention has already been paid to Trump's use of Twitter as a phenomenon-how it helps drive news cycles, distracts attention from other matters, or levies attacks against rivals, the news media, and other critics-there has been little scholarly analysis of the impact Twitter played in the actual election.

  • - Why a Social Justice Perspective Matters
    av Monica M. Taylor

This book addresses the obesity epidemic from a political, economic and social perspective. While it does examine the behavioral risks associated with rising obesity rates, it also explores the political level, by evaluating theories in social justice and the political economy that foster or restrict at-risk behaviors.

    av Taner Akan
    869,-

The common roots of success and failure in economic growth and development lie in the systemic governance and fragmentation of institutional complementarities, respectively, but not in the unilateral adaptation of market-led or state-led models.

This monograph investigates the stability and performance of control systems subject to actuator saturation. The authors apply these treatments to the estimation of the domain of attraction and the finite-gain L2 performance by using the quadratic Lyapunov function and the composite quadratic Lyapunov function.

  • - The CSHPM 2016 Annual Meeting in Calgary, Alberta

    1 339

This volume contains fourteen papers that were presented at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society for History and Philosophy of Mathematics/La Société Canadienne d¿Histoire et de Philosophie des Mathématiques, held at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. In addition to showcasing rigorously reviewed modern scholarship on an interesting variety of topics in the history and philosophy of mathematics, this meeting also honored the life and work of the logician and philosopher of mathematics Aldo Antonelli (1962-2015). The first four papers in this book are part of that remembrance and have a philosophical focus. Included in these are a discussion of Bolzanös objections to Kant¿s philosophy of mathematics and an examination of the influence of rhetorical and poetic aesthetics on the development of symbols in the 16th and 17th Centuries. The remaining papers deal with the history of mathematics and cover such subjects as Early schemes for polar ordinates in the work of L¿Hôpital, based on lessons given to him by BernoulliA method devised by Euler for determining if a number is a sum of two squaresPlayfair¿s Axiom and what it reveals about the history of 19th-Century mathematics educationThe modern library classification system for mathematical subjectsAn exploration of various examples of sundials throughout ParisWritten by leading scholars in the field, these papers are accessible to not only mathematicians and students of the history and philosophy of mathematics, but also anyone with a general interest in mathematics.

  • - Qualitative Properties of Solutions, Phase Space Analysis, Semilinear Models
av Marcelo R. Ebert & Michael Reissig
    1 319,-

This book provides an overview of different topics related to the theory of partial differential equations. Selected exercises are included at the end of each chapter to prepare readers for the ¿research project for beginners¿ proposed at the end of the book. It is a valuable resource for advanced graduates and undergraduate students who are interested in specializing in this area. The book is organized in five parts:In Part 1 the authors review the basics and the mathematical prerequisites, presenting two of the most fundamental results in the theory of partial differential equations: the Cauchy-Kovalevskaja theorem and Holmgren's uniqueness theorem in its classical and abstract form. It also introduces the method of characteristics in detail and applies this method to the study of Burger's equation.Part 2 focuses on qualitative properties of solutions to basic partial differential equations, explaining the usual properties of solutions to elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations for the archetypes Laplace equation, heat equation and wave equation as well as the different features of each theory. It also discusses the notion of energy of solutions, a highly effective tool for the treatment of non-stationary or evolution models and shows how to define energies for different models.Part 3 demonstrates how phase space analysis and interpolation techniques are used to prove decay estimates for solutions on and away from the conjugate line. It also examines how terms of lower order (mass or dissipation) or additional regularity of the data may influence expected results.Part 4 addresses semilinear models with power type non-linearity of source and absorbing type in order to determine critical exponents: two well-known critical exponents, the Fujita exponent and the Strauss exponent come into play. Depending on concrete models these critical exponents divide the range of admissible powers in classes which make it possible to prove quite different qualitative properties of solutions, for example, the stability of the zero solution or blow-up behavior of local (in time) solutions. The last part features selected research projects and general background material.

  • - From Groups and Tiles to Frames and Vaccines

This highly readable book aims to ease the many challenges of starting undergraduate research. It accomplishes this by presenting a diverse series of self-contained, accessible articles which include specific open problems and prepare the reader to tackle them with ample background material and references. Each article also contains a carefully selected bibliography for further reading. The content spans the breadth of mathematics, including many topics that are not normally addressed by the undergraduate curriculum (such as matroid theory, mathematical biology, and operations research), yet have few enough prerequisites that the interested student can start exploring them under the guidance of a faculty member. Whether trying to start an undergraduate thesis, embarking on a summer REU, or preparing for graduate school, this book is appropriate for a variety of students and the faculty who guide them.

This book tells the story of Terania Creek - the world's first direct action blockade in defence of a forest, occurring in Australia in 1979. Contrary to claims that the Australian counterculture was a mere imitation of overseas models, the Australian movement, coalescing with a home-grown environment movement, came of age at Terania Creek.
