China's Belt and Road Initiative, started in 2013, has transformed many places around the world but also China itself. In some cases, it provided crucial infrastructure, such as the General Hospital of Niger in Niamey or the National Library of El Salvador, while it also generated entire new urban areas, e.g. the Free Zone in Khorghos, Kazakhstan, with sometimes controversial effects to local communities and the environment. Based on research undertaken at the Politecnico di Torino, this publication looks at the Belt and Road Initiative in architectural and spatial terms. Organized in thematic categories, it entails a survey of 21 case studies and investigates the impact of these China-backed projects. All buildings are documented with maps, architectural drawings and photographs specifically created for this book.

The architectural work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt (1890-1954/1889-1972) is not yet adequately appreciated. As members of the Glass Chain initiative and the Ring collective, they shaped, especially through their work with Alfons Anker, the development of Modernist architecture in the 1920s, as evidenced by their winning design for the layout of Berlin's Alexanderplatz. While their early work was anchored in utopian expressionism, a more objective attitude emerged later, based on the application of new architectural constructs. The book documents all 40 of Hans und Wassili Luckhardt's realized buildings. Two essays deal with the unbuilt and utopian projects. Newly taken photographs and newly drawn plans by Carsten Krohn complement the historical illustrations. Comprehensive documentation of the work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt. With approx. 80 new photographs and 80 newly drawn plans by Carsten Krohn

Sie waren u.a.

The decades after the Second World War saw ambitious building programs to ensure social welfare. The Scandinavian countries in particular underwent an intense modernisation phase with the aim to distribute welfare to all. Yet, the relationship between welfare values and design in Scandinavia is anything but stable. The spatial and political legacy of post-war construction varies amongst Denmark, Sweden, and Norway and their welfare models have been changed, contested, and copied over time. This book explores how architecture, once seen as a medium for universal welfare, inclusion, and political participation, is now often associated with the opposite, such as alienation, exclusion, and segregation. The volume offers new perspectives on the history and redesign of post-war architecture and urbanity. With attractive photo essays on social housing in Scandinavia Based on an interdisciplinary research project by KTH Stockholm, Oslo School of Architecture, University of Copenhagen Internationally renown contributors shed light on aspects of the relationship between architecture and welfare

First comprehensive monograph about the tropical architecture of Godwin and Hopwood in Nigeria After studying at the Architectural Association in London, John Godwin and Gillian Hopwood moved to Nigeria, where they significantly shaped the country's architectural landscape for more than sixty years. When Nigeria became independent in 1960 following British dominance since the 19th century, the couple worked to create architecture that was site-specific, modern, and adapted to the climate relevant to Nigeria's aspirational political and economic policies. In this richly illustrated monograph, organised by typology, Ben Tosland examines Godwin and Hopwood's form of tropical modernism and illuminates its contemporary meanings and concluding with its relevance in times of the climate crisis. First comprehensive monograph about the architecture of Godwin and Hopwood Image-rich publication on one of the most important architectural practices for post-colonial, independent Nigeria Insightful findings for passive structural cooling techniques

Countering the phenomenon of sprawl in the often anonymous or chaotic urban periphery, the Oassis neighborhood in Lausanne takes a unique approach based on urbanity and hybridization. Located on a former industrial wasteland in the west of the city, Oassis reflects the compositional principles of the traditional city, while also engaging in the dynamics of ecological transition and climate resilience. This 'urban fragment' is both an urban fabric, compatible with future developments in the neighborhood, and an architectural object characterized by urbanity. The contemporary challenges of regenerating suburban areas are addressed here through diverse development programs and a profusion of gardens. Skilful combination of economic, ecological and social factors with high-quality architecture With unpublished documents and specially commissioned photographs

The garden as inspiration The garden embodies a condensed version of nature, just as, in Japanese philosophy, the entire world is thought to be reflected in a single dewdrop. This notion may be the inspiration for the Swiss imitation of Japanese gardens in the 20th century, the impetus for the incorporation of Japanese design elements more generally, and the conversion principle from alpine landscapes to Japanese stone gardens. Taking ten Swiss landscape architecture studios as examples, the author illustrates how they drew inspiration from miniaturized gardens (bonsai), borrowed scenery (shakkei), succumbed to the allure of the imperfect (wabi-sabi), and captured the spirit of Zen Buddhism. This book reveals parallels to the assimilation of Chinese influences in Japan and situates the phenomenon within the general reception of Japan in the West. Attractive and previously unpublished visual materials Well-researched content presented in a clear and appealing manner Japanophilia in Swiss landscape architecture with a photoessay by Martin Linsi

Never before had the garden to fulfil so many demands as it does today. It is a refuge from digitalised life and acts as a bridge to nature. As a man-made place where plants grow, it is cultivated and untamable at the same time. While for centuries the gardener's ambition was to control and subjugate nature, today it serves more as a place for retreat, a possible surrogate for wilderness, a habitat for animals or it fulfils the dream of self-sufficiency. In this book, landscape architects, sociologists, architects, artists, philosophers and historians illuminate different aspects of the garden in the Anthropocene in six chapters: the garden as a place of community, garden as art, garden as a place of enchantment and rapture, opening up questions of what garden as a model could stand for.

Though sometimes overlooked and underestimated, rural space has played a substantial role in social, cultural, economic, and ideological change. This role can be studied by looking at the re/production of spatial agents that were caused by direct or indirect political interventions in rural communities. In this book, scholars looking at case studies from Greece, Turkey, Italy, Portugal, and Austria discuss the making of identity in and through rural areas, which have dramatically changed under different political, social, and economic conditions from the turn of the 20th century up until today. By focusing on potential contestations of such changes, the authors provide a better in-depth understanding of spatial dynamics related to cultural and social spheres of 20th-century rurality. Includes contributions of national and international experts Deals with 20th-century rural environment and identity-making policies Findings of an international symposium of DFG Research Training Group "Cultural and Technological Significance of Historic Buildings", Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus-Senftenberg

Sustainability Sustainability is to become the guiding principle of social action and economic activity. At the same time, its ways and means are far from clear. As a holistic praxis, sustainability must combine technical and material as well as social, economic, ecological and also ethical strategies, which have multiple complex interactions and all too often also conflicting goals and priorities. In no other field can these be better observed, addressed and influenced than in architecture and building. "Building Better - Less - Different" Each volume of "Building Better - Less - Different" details two fundamental areas of sustainability and explores their specific dynamics and interactions. After introductory overviews, innovative methods and current developments are described and analysed in in-depth essays, international case studies and pointed commentaries. The sustainability criteria of efficiency ("better"), sufficiency ("less") and consistency ("different") form the framework for each book. What the press say about the first volume"Circular Construction and Circular Economy" "The articles, case studies and commentaries in this book make a major contribution to advancing the current discourse on implementing circular-based economic models in the building sector." Hessian Chamber of Architects, book reviews "To think of tomorrow when building today is the core message that Dirk E. Hebel and Felix Heisel want to convey to their readers. ... And they also show us how: with the help of relevant examples, grouped under the headings 'better', 'less' and 'different', they demonstrate concrete applications and argue that circular construction can also benefit the construction industry..." architektur aktuell Clean energy transition It has long been common knowledge that energy and sustainability are closely interlinked. And yet we are witnessing a profound shift in the sector. While the earlier focus was on improving energy efficiency and increasing the proportion of renewable energy in buildings, current energy conservation policies are supporting a broader, more holistic view. This encompasses integral approaches in which building design and construction measures form part of the energy concept from the outset, as well as accounting for grey energy in building materials and a holistic evaluation of buildings over their entire life cycle. For the energy-intensive and emission-producing building sector, climate change presents an even greater challenge than conserving resources. How can we contribute to a shift in heating strategies and employ new technologies to achieve climate-neutral heating? How can we respond to rising temperatures and the risk of increased energy consumption for cooling? Can low-tech concepts help to reduce the environmental impact of buildings over their life cycle? Shouldn't we take greater account of the users of buildings, and do we need completely different energy supply strategies? Digital Transformation At a time of natural ubiquity of digital tools, widely adopted to streamline project delivery in architecture, the foundations have been laid for a profound transformation of the construction industry to address the climate crisis. Digital architectural design and construction methods can be used as enabling technologies for a fundamental change towards a circular construction approach with significantly reduced ecological and climate impact. This approach comprises a digital reinterpretation of natural building materials through digital construction technologies. Digital deconstruction and reuse strategies can transform the existing building stock into resources for the future. Mass customization of tailor-made building components minimizes resource consumption. Architects, in their emerging role as interdisciplinary interface and digital master builders, reunite design and making through digital craft. Finally, the book provides a glimpse into the potential future of construction, which might be characterized by fundamentally different concepts of design and materialization of our built environment, challenging current paradigms within our discipline.
