  • - Nondualism and the Conduct of Sacrifice
    av T. M. S. Evens
    435 - 1 565

Cutting across social science and the humanities, this book develops the ontological implications of the thesis of the Manchester School of Social Anthropology: that all social order necessarily betrays conflicting underlying principles. It also mounts a study of the ontology of self and other in relation to dualism, as well as non-dualism.

  • - Biological and Social Perspectives on Alloparenting in Human Societies

    1 619,-

From a comparative perspective, human life histories are unique and raising offspring is unusually costly: humans have relatively short birth intervals compared to other apes, childhood is long, mothers care simultaneously for many dependent children (other apes raise one offspring at a time), infant mortality is high in natural fertility/mortality

  • - Ethics, Politics, and Fieldwork in Anthropology

    2 039

Concerns with research ethics have intensified over recent years, in large part as a symptom of "audit cultures" (M. Strathern) but also as a serious matter of engagement with the ethical complexities in contemporary research fields.

  • - Europeanizing Contemporary Histories

    1 419

Despite the interest in general European history, the European dimension is surprisingly absent from much of the writing of contemporary history. In most countries, the historiography on the 20th century is dominated by national perspectives. This book focuses on the development of a shared conception of European history.

    405,-

Underlying the current dynamics of technological developments, their divergence or convergence and the abundance of options, promises and risks they contain, is the quest for innovation, the contributors to this volume argue. The seemingly insatiable demand for novelty coincides with the rise of modern science and the onset of modernity...

  • - Explorations of Urban Coexistence

    565

Examining the way people imagine and interact in their cities, this book explores the post-cosmopolitan city. The contributors consider the effects of migration, national, and religious revivals (with their new aesthetic sensibilities), the dispositions of marginalized economic actors, and globalized tourism on urban sociality.

  • - Accounts of Jewish Everyday Life, 1933-1938

    1 419

Most books on Nazi Germany focus on the war years. Much less is known about the preceding years although these give important clues with regard to the events after November 1938, which culminated in the Holocaust.

  • - Negotiating the Self, Narrative, and Modernity
    av Lisette Josephides
    405 - 1 419

In a series of epic self-narratives ranging from traditional cultural embodiments to picaresque adventures, Christian epiphanies and a host of interactive strategies and techniques for living, Kewa Highlanders (PNG) attempt to shape and control their selves and their relentlessly changing world. This lively account transcends ethnographic particularity and offers a wide-reaching perspective on the nature of being human. Inverting the analytic logic of her previous work, which sought to uncover what social structures concealed, Josephides focuses instead on the cultural understandings that people make explicit in their actions and speech. Using approaches from philosophy and anthropology, she examines elicitation (how people create their selves and their worlds in the act of making explicit) and mimesis (how anthropologists produce ethnographies), to arrive at an unexpected conclusion: that knowledge of self and other alike derives from self-externalization rather than self-introspection.

  • - Transnational Media During and After Socialism

  • - Transitional Justice, Trial Narratives, and Historiography

    1 849

For decades the history of the US Military Tribunals at Nuremberg (NMT) has been eclipsed by the first Nuremberg trial - the International Military Tribunal or IMT. The first comprehensive examination of the NMT, this volume brings together diverse perspectives from several fields to explore the impact and legacy of the NMT.

  • - German-American Women, Women's Rights and Nativism, 1848-1890
    av Michaela Bank
    1 859

German-American women played many roles in the US women's rights movement from 1848 to 1890. This book focuses on three figures-Mathilde Wendt, Mathilde Franziska Anneke, and Clara Neymann-who were simultaneously included and excluded from the nativist women's rights movement. Accordingly, their roles and arguments differed from those of their American colleagues, such as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, or Lucy Stone. Moreover, German-American feminists were confronted with the opposition to the women's rights movement in their ethnic community of German-Americans. As outsiders in the women's rights movement they became critics; as "e;women of two countries"e; they became translators of feminist and ethnic concerns between German- Americans and the US women's rights movement; and as messengers they could bridge the gap between American and German women in a transatlantic space. This book explores the relationship between ethnicity and gender and deepens our understanding of nineteenth-century transatlantic relationships.
