We are all governed by our autonomic nervous system, and neuroscience tells us our bodies sometimes just react to situations with which we are faced. When we are faced with something that frightens us, for example, we may go into what is called a fight or flight mode; and when we are in a calmer place then we might sit and digest and just think about things. Emergencies may send us into fight or flight, while non-emergencies allow us to rest and digest. Often we do not understand why we do things, and sometimes the things we do can be explained by neuroscience. Written by award winning author, attorney and former teacher, Penelope Dyan, this 'learn to read' book is meant to keep kids thinking. Using skill based methods of word recognition, word repetition and rhyme, and filled with kid-friendly drawings, this book is a perfect fit for the core curriculum where young students are supposed to think and create. To further enhance the learning experience, there is a fun music video to go along with this book on the Bellissimavideo YouTube channel.

Urquhart Castle sits near the banks of Loch Ness. It was one of Scotland's largest castles, and its ruins include a tower house commanding views of the famous loch and Great Glen. The castle has experienced a lot of conflict throughout its 500 years as a medieval fortress. It's history from the 13th to 17th centuries was particularly bloody. Following the invasion of Edward I, it fell into English hands, was reclaimed and lost again. Then in the 14th century, it was part of the Scots' struggle for independence. It came under the control of Robert the Bruce after he became King of Scots, and in the 15th and 16th centuries the castle and glen were raided from the west by the ruthless MacDonald Lords of the Isles. Now none of that means much to a kid. What is important to a kid is the mystery and the fun of a place, and this is a place where the imagination of a kid will know no bounds. Practice reading skills through word recognition, word repetition and rhyme as you look though the camera lens of photographer, John D. Weigand. Award winning author, attorney and former teacher, Penelope Dyan, and John D. Weigand know how to keep a kid's interest, because they see through the eyes of a child. And if you look on the Bellissimavideo YouTube channel for the music video that goes with this book, you will find even more learning fun!

Nash's House, Chapel Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England is the house next door to the ruins and gardens of William Shakespeare's final residence, New Place. It has been converted into a museum that is perfect for kids! It traces the history of Stratford-upon-Avon from the earliest settlers in the Avon Valley to Shakespeare's time. There are lots of fun hands-on activities there for kids making it the perfect place to visit after you have visited all the other housed in the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, which acquired New Place and Nash's House in 1876. New Place is basically not existent, and what you see there looks more like a vacant lot than anything else; however they are uncovering things on the lot all the time, so the various exhibits keep growing with the continued research and discovery. Nash's House was named after Thomas Nash, who was the first husband of Shakespeare's granddaughter, Elizabeth. The ground floor is furnished as it would have been in Nash's day. Enjoy the photography of John D. Weigand as you explore Nash's House and practice your reading skills through word recognition, repetition and rhyme; and then watch a fun music video on the Bellissimavideo YouTube Channel that goes with this book for even more learning fun!

Vienna, the largest city in Austria, is its capitol. It is known as the city of music because of its musical roots, and it is also known as the city of dreams because it was home to the world's first psycho-analyst, Sigmund Freud. The roots of the city lie in early Celtic and Roman settlements that created a Medieval, Baroque city.Photographer John D. Weigand and award winning author, attorney and former teacher, Penelope Dyan visited Vienna just before Christmas and saw many things that would delight a child. Dyan believes the key to traveling well with a child, especially a young one, is to not put them into overload. "If you do that," Dyan says, "then all you will end up with are complaints of tummy aches and hurting feet." The trick here is to let the child absorb, because a child is like a sponge. Let them look at pictures and then just watch and see what he or she sees. Museums are soon forgotten, and what is remembered is what they saw as only they can see. Dyan asked a well traveled young Italian child in Spain what he liked to do when he traveled, and he simply answered, "Go to playgrounds and parks." According to Dyan, if you want to see with a child's eyes, ask a child what they see! This is how Dyan sees through the eyes of a child. There is also a video on the Bellissimavideo YouTube Channel that goes along with this book!

Louis XVI ascended to the throne amidst a financial crisis. The state was nearing bankruptcy and expenitures exceeded income. This was because of France's financial obligations from their own involvement in the Seven Years War and its participation in the American Revolutionary War. The end result was overthrow of the government by a lot of angry French people. Photographer, John D. Weigand and the award winning author, attorney and former teacher, Penelope Dyan have now once again combined efforts to create a book that does not simply spoon feed children facts, but instead encourages them to ask lots of questions and to learn. All children should be encouraged to make this book their own through inserting their own photographs, notes, tickets, etc., into the book. Dyan believes it is okay to explore all facets of history, because we learn from our history, which tends to repeat itself if left to its own devices. She also encourages children to think for themselves and to think about others, and this is a prevalent pattern in her books as she and Weigand see with the eyes of a child, what captures their infinite interest, knowing that all the riches in the world cannot begin to buy neither happiness nor a long life, as was the case with the French nobility and royalty, a repetitious historic theme.

Brenner Pass is a beautiful place, and the exciting thing is that you can see it by train! If you want, you can even stop at one of the many train stations along the way and stretch your legs and talk a walk around one of the several lovely small towns. Brenner Pass is a feast for the eyes. Have your children count how many church steeples they see along the way, or how many small villages they see. At the end of World War I international borders shifted. Control of the area has shared between Italy and Austria ever since. During World War II, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini met there to celebrate their Pact of Steel on March 10, 1940. And Brenner Pass was a Nazi escape route after the collapse of Germany in 1945.The pass is beautiful to behold, and with or without its colorful history, the journey is fun and interesting. Travel the pass through the pages of this book, and pretend you can hear the sound of the rails going clickity clack, clickity clack as you trave along the railroad's track.

Penelope Dyan was cruising down the Rhine River in Germany when a wrinkled rather young woman began blowing smoke in her face. Dyan very politely tried to fan the smoke away with a piece of paper; and the woman just laughed at her and held the cigarette closer. Right then and there, as children played nearby, this story formed in her head. In fact, Dyan tried to turn on her computer that very instant to write this story, but the sun was too bright; and she couldn't see the computer screen. Nevertheless, the story was written. It is something that must be said. No one should ever be so selfish as to invade the breathing space of another. Use this book to warn your children about the dangers of smoking and second hand smoke, or give this book to a friend as a friendly nudge to stop smoking altogether. Be brave like the child in this story. Don't be afraid to be a little rude when your health is at issue, and never punish your child for saying something that is true and right.Dyan is a former k-12 teacher and an award winning writer. And as irreverent as this book may seem, it tells a very big truth.,

You can learn a lot about life from a tar pit, like don't get too close or you just might fall in and get stuck and never be able to get out! Penelope Dyan was inspired by her visit to the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, California, because the Tar Pits spoke to her about the origins and the disappearance of so many species. Surprised at how many different species were excavated from the pits, she was reminded about the fragility of life and how we all must work together to preserve what we have. Life does not have to end up in the pits.Join Author Penelope Dyan as she tells her very special version of the story of the La Brea Tar Pits. Everyone has dreams and sometimes those dreams you dream at night can be scarey. That's how it was with Ben one night. He had a dream that was both scary and fun, but it was still a dream he was glad to get out of when he saw the vultures and realized he was among so many wild animals. There are basically two types of dreams, the dreams you wish for and hope will come true and the dreams you dream at night. The dreams you dream at night are divided into two additional main categories. One of those categorizes is the good dream, and one is the bad dream. The thing to remember is all dreams come from inside your head, so if you get frightened at night, you are merely frightening yourself, and all you need to do is either take control of your dream or wake up and get out of bed or go back to sleep and think happy thoughts so you have good dreams.Parents can use this book to talk about these things with their children to help them understand what is happening when they dream and also to reassure them all is well, just as Ben's mother did in this book. Penelope Dyan's first Ben Book, "Ben's adventures---Proof Positive A Boy Will Be A Boy" has been honored by being placed in the Southbank Center Poetry Library, London, chosen by the Arts Council, UK. Dyan is an attorney and former k-12 teacher who loves and really understands kids of all ages, even kids who are grown-ups! This is also book for boys that girls can read, because everyone dreams!
