And to the degree of absorption to your own soul...I pray you will uncover sparks of life in my candor, my thoughts, my uncanny approach, my fresh ideas, my honesty, my truths, my deep passion and even my outrage which create this message I share with you today.

    This collection of poems was assembled from five decades of writing. Uniting the poems is an attempt to find words that record the material world while also cracking it open to the mystery that animates all things. In this sense, the poems, even the secular and humorous among them, manifest the sacred, the holy present in every human, plant or rock. Should a label be put on the collection, and none fit well, they are poems built from concrete images, from a full opening of the senses, though sight seems to prevail. The poems provide the reader with the experience of joy and sorrow, pain and delight, a time to laugh and a time to cry. They open simple, ordinary events into larger spiritual realms. They grow from soil made rich from reading great poets, classical and contemporary, with special debts to John Donne, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, T. S. Eliot, Robert Lowell, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Galway Kinnell, Linda Pasten, Sharon Olds, and Mary Oliver. Writers of fiction, the liturgy of the church, the Psalms, the writing of great mystics and naturalists have also influenced these poems. In particular, I mention Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, St. John of the Cross, Thoreau, and Annie Dillard. The list is long. One always writes in the wake of other writers. Lastly, the poems grow from a quiet love lived with loving friends and family. The love and the quiet are present as subtext of many poems. They are poems about the little things which, pieced together, form a life worth living.

    Deep reflection is not necessarily associated with complex or slow thinking; rather it is a smart, deliberate response to life around you by giving yourself the opportunity to move beyond the first response-which is often reactive and emotive-to any situation or idea you encounter, whether on a practical, emotional or even imaginary level. "e;Deep"e; reinforces the tendency to think deeply and positively on these various topics: facing troublemakers, dealing with pain, personal financial issues, gastronomy, reading, criticizing, inspiring, and feeling always good to go. The reader will find in this book the inspiration to look at life with great confidence and positivity in dealing with the constant challenges, and those who love reading specifically will find "e;Deep"e; a pure pleasure to read.

    I wrote my first book last year during the pandemic. The times were difficult and our country was on lockdown due to the surging numbers of people infected with and dying from the Covid-19 virus. There was much unrest amongst the people of our nation due to social injustice and the conditions we faced as a result of the pandemic. Many families suffered the loss of loved ones and people could not gather together for support. It was then I began to write my children's story. The story is told from the viewpoint of a child. The main character awakens due to a noise she hears coming from the living-room. When she enters the room she sees her mother watching television and there are people holding signs. Her mother doesn't see her enter the room and a tear falls from her eyes. When Livi asks her mother what's happening a conversation unfolds that gives way to inclusion and diversity. Her mother uses the illustration of a rainbow to describe the unique characteristics of individuals. The two children discuss with their mother the importance of being accepting and open to others differences. This is a great book for discovering character feelings and introducing diversity to children.

    My goal is for this book to serve as a resource for others who have been affected by a Traumatic Brain Injury. Deep in my heart, I hope that this book helps them to be able to adjust to their new lives and prepare for the trails that they will have to deal with as they go through their recovery and learn how to live differently. I encourage all of them to pick up their cross, and accept Jesus in their lives as their Lord and Savior. Believe in him, and believe in His word...the Holy Bible. The accounts in the bible have bee proven by eye witnesses, college researchers, and archeologists. However thick and however high your steel wall stands doesn't matter, for He is right there with you, waiting for you to receive Him. John 16:33 reads, "e;I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."e;

    This light, this sword, this sabre, this Great White Shark, this grand collection of poetry, then, eats its way through any hole or depression. It is the sun to the disappearing moon, Jupiter to Mars, living in paradise not behind bars. Written in and around Grand Valley Healthcare Center, the nursing home in Van Nuys, CA where Luza has spent the last ten or so months, this landmark autobiographical poetry collection embraces the pain, suffering, frustration, longing and suicidal tendencies that come with a true artist's imprisonment in one of these facilities. So, freedom chained, love aborted and harmony molested, here he is swinging for any fence he can find. If the questions are:Why is human kind on earth?Where did we come from?What does it mean to be human?Then, NURSING HOME BLUES has the answers spiritually, philosophically, metaphysically, emotionally, intellectually and psychologically. Tomorrow is a blue dawn, yesterday a red maple and today a green meadow. This tome is a buffet for poets and a cornucopia for writers and thinkers alike. Do not put it down!!
