The Bible had made history, changed societies, created art and also caused murders-quite a lot of murders in fact. The latest one is the killing of Professor Karl Fehr of the University of London. He provided the long missing archaeological proof for a daring theory published by Professor Kamal Salibi, a real (not fictional) Lebanese historian [see his book 'The Bible came from Arabia', 1985). Based on thorough linguistic and geographical studies he, and later also Fehr, became convinced that all locations and events mentioned in the Old Testament are connected to Asir, a southern province of today's Saudi Arabia, and not to the region of Palestine/Israel! Of course, hardly anyone is willing to see any truth in that theory. It is not conform with the age-old and commonly accepted interpretation of the Old Testament and is therefore shocking. No wonder that Salibi in his lifetime and now Fehr with his archaeological proof faced a whole phalanx of enemies, among them Fehr's murder. Professor Rietberg, a Middle East historian and Fehr's colleague at the University of London, as the amateur detective with this talents already proven in other murder cases manages finally to solve this politically sensitive case as well.

  • - An Epic Adventure in Time and Space and a Tale of Enduring Love
    av C J Harvey

Some ten thousand years ago, Earth was visited by beings from another planet in the Barnard's Star system. The Babylonians recorded that beings they called the Oannes were amphibious creatures who came to Earth for the welfare of the human race. The historian Hellandus describes them as having fishlike features but the head, feet, and arms of a man. They instructed humans in everything a civilized nation should know. They built a city beneath Antarctica near the Davis Sea and have lived there peacefully and secretly ever since. But now a rogue Dwarf Star called Zarama threatens the very existence of both Earth and the home planet, Nazmos.Their mythology predicts that a being from another planet will avert disaster.Enter Ashley Bonner into this scenario. He has been granted special gifts, and the Oannes think he may be the predicted one.Can Ashley really prevail against a star a third more massive than the sun? This is the story of Ashley's development to manhood from age four to seventy and his ultimate sacrifice to save both worlds.-C. • - An Epitome of Cowardice
    av Ansbert Ngurumo
    179,-

While some western media nicknamed him "bulldozer," and one opposition politician in Tanzania called him "petty dictator," some critics have called him the "Trump of East Africa." His bullish and sadistic statements and actions have qualified him as a modern day dictator on the rise. It calls for an immediate local and international action in order to arrest the situation before it worsens and destabilises the whole of Eastern and Southern Africa. In a similar manner that Italy's Benito Mussolini, Germany's Adolf Hitler, Zaire's Mobutu Seseseko and Uganda's Idi Amin rose to power and used it to crash independent thought and crumble their countries, turning their citizens into subjects, John Pombe Magufuli, has made Tanzania infamous for the wrong reasons. In just three years, he has almost successfully attempted to replace democracy with a one-man rule, becoming an embodiment of brutality, nepotism, authoritarianism, grand corruption, diplomatic exclusion-ism, extrajudicial killings, abductions and arbitrary torture of civilians; turning East Africa's most peaceful and stable country into a police state and a "skunk of the world." His distorted approach to leadership and development, and his disregard of democracy, human rights and rule of law have turned him into a bully that seeks religious obedience from everyone, and he uses fear as his main tool of leadership. He terrorises the parliament, the opposition, the media, the diplomatic and international community, his own party, Muslims, journalists, activists, religious leaders, the business community, the judiciary and others - in a bid to establish himself as a leader that must be feared and never dared. This book exposes, through analysis, the root of this sadistic leadership. It digs deep into the dictator's behaviour and leadership style. It encourages everyone to stand firm and overcome threats imposed by this despot. It awakens governance institutions to do their noble and constitutional task, and never allow similar mistakes that paved the way for this situation to prevail. The good news is that the dictator is timid and cowardly. His use of fear as a leadership tool testifies to his cowardice and insecurity. Proactive action from local and international partners in development will help to stop the dictator from causing further damage - putting an end to his autocratic rule as he seeks to extend it. There is every indication that, given a chance, he would never leave power voluntarily. Civilised people do not have to wait for that to happen. The world does not need another Idi Amin in East Africa. There is no need for the world to watch East Africa's most peaceful nation sinking into irreparable, perpetual mess as it did with Rwanda prior to the 1994 genocide. With this book, I am stepping in to offer an informed analysis that may be part of the solution. I am laying a ground for a further follow up and research on the matter.

This little-known but remarkable man was not just a Missionary. He was a writer, photographer, naturalist, and linguist as well. Despite only receiving a primary school education, he published several books on Polynesia and Madagascar, illustrating them with the then new science of photography and his own drawings. Having taught himself both printing and bookbinding, he translated the scriptures and religious texts into the native language for the use of the local congregation. His last days were spent in his English country home, enjoying his garden and the plants he had introduced from his travels.

  • - An Olla Podrida of Opera Anecdotes
    av Gerry Zwirn
    179,-

Covent Garden 1947. After acknowledging the applause following her spectacular debut performance of Salome, Bulgarian soprano Ljuba Welitsch made her way back to her dressing-room. As she was changing her costume there came a knock on the door: a small group of male admirers had gathered outside to pay their compliments. Taken completely by surprise the startled diva, whose English at the time was, to say the least, somewhat limited, called out:"Don't come in yet poys: I'm still dressed!"It's anecdotes like these that add sparkle and fun to the topsy-turvy world of opera - hence the title. The author has spent about three years collecting more than three hundred anecdotes about operas, singers, composers, conductors and impresarios. Arranged from A to Z for easy reference, the reader will find an amusing account of the man who, after seeing a performance of Aida in Parma, wrote to Verdi demanding his money back; stories about Callas, Caruso and other celebrated singers as well as such composers as Rossini, Puccini and Straus (not a typo: it's spelt with one s); about the World's Greatest Tenor and the various claimants to that illustrious but contentious title; composers who sang; the hidden dangers of opera in translation; prima donnas and their tantrums; and the activities of that unseen body, the claque. If you'd like to test your knowledge of matters operatic check the opera quiz. There's also the story of a little fox terrier, who despite his humble pedigree, can claim to be the world's most famous dog, mainly thanks to opera.

This book of poems I have written spans over various stages of my life. I think of each as a different thought process. From Nature through to politics ( Even though i don't really consider myself a political person). But i still find it a vehicle for thought and thought release, within a positive and negative realm that surrounds us everyday.

  • - An Anthology of Poetry and Short Fiction
    av Kanyampa Manda
    195,-

An anthology of Poetry and short fiction whose preoccupation is to engage this troubled world, to come to a realization, to forsake its life of vanity and therefore focus onto real issues- the fight against poverty- to raise the status of the least of our brothers to a level of dignity. Thus - ReCreation to remake the world. The introduction to the collection notes the different aspects of the concept of the title, as representing both light diversion and spiritual renewal. This collection accordingly provide for both these aspects, offering pictures of the innocence of everyday life and a readiness to indulge in contemplation. A better idea of the collection's character would be gained from particular mention of one or two individual poems: This Poetry - a typical twentieth century style poem, moves from an invocation of the setting of its making to more abstract considerations of perfection, harmony and wholeness; Mind, Body and Soul is a remarkable and highly visual sequence of particularities of time, place and landscape, while Who Will Plead for Angola is a more overtly moral and political lament for failed expectations and ideals.A distinctive voice. The verse is dignified, and eloquent in mood and tone, but also visually and metaphorically evocative and very much alive to natural phenomena and human habit and motive.Enjoy.

Tina lived in a time when there was no name or diagnosis for mental illnesses nor an understanding of the various types of mental ailments and treatment for them. As the years passed, the medical science of mind matters, psychiatry, and help for dysfunctional personalities came into its own. Today, in our modern world, there is help and medical professionals trained to work in the field of the human mind. So many trigger points and causes lead to these behavior patterns-from trauma to the simple struggle of living day by day with all that this brings to us. Some of us are more resilient, more able to deal with stress and strain. Many are not for a variety of reasons and causes. Please consider her story, and if you identify with her or you see that your loved one or a family member does, please be brave and reach out for help. Make the choice deliberately and on purpose to get the help you need. Don't waste time waiting for later and, while you do, destroy those around you and your own chance to be happy and to heal.
