This novel is a powerful, grim, historical fantasy story, based around the slave trade of the 17th and 18th centuries and its repercussions on a family whose wealth is built on it. The first part of the story introduces the present-day 10th Lord of Eastlyn, Robert Montague, and his family, who continue to endure the consequences of a voodoo hex placed upon them centuries before. The second part describes the 1st Lord of Eastlyn, George Montague, a wealthy but cruel and callous slave trader, and the enslavement of an Amazonian warrior named Nabila. Much of the novel's strength is rooted in its foregrounding, which depicts man's inhumanity to man and the vile and heinous nature of slavery. The final part shows the effect the curse has had on the Montague family and describes the actions and courage of young cousins who set out to free themselves from the voodoo hex placed upon them. The twists and turns that take place as a result are comprehensive and will provide entertaining relief for the reader following this tale of human suffering and vindication.

Are you ready for round two of Now Who's Talking? Des Lynam returns with more animal antics in this second collection of conversations, once again illustrated by Bryony Hill. This time, they're heading to the farm and the zoo to eavesdrop on an even wider variety of animals, ranging from ferrets and turkeys to flamingos and crocodiles. Just as in the previous volume, Des gives voice to the animals in a way that mirrors their behaviour in the real world, while at the same time offering some intriguing insights into their interactions with us humans. As ever, Des's words are perfectly complemented by Bryony's imaginative yet realistic drawings. 'Full of charm, novelty, and wit - just like the man himself.' Susie Dent 'I loved Des's voice. It was always one of my favourites to imitate ("Wine 'em... dine 'em... Lynam"). Now the old master's found a whole range of voices and applied them to the birds and animals in his garden and beyond. Whimsical, witty, imaginative - and great fun.' Rory Bremner

How does a farm boy brought up on an isolated farm with no electricity, or running water supply, leaving school at fifteen with no academic qualifications, have a successful career in the police force and become an overseas police adviser? John describes his motivation to serve and protect, and takes you through his police career, including when he climbed the headstock of a disused colliery to talk down a disturbed teenager, had a convicted killer hold a knife to his throat, and took a loaded shotgun out of the hands of an aggressive teenager. He enumerates his progression through the ranks and describes an occasion when he refused to obey an order from his Chief Constable, which probably cost him a promotion. Post-retirement, he worked for a private security company involved in the escorting of prisoners to courts and prisons and describes having to spend three days in the witness box at an inquest into the death of a prisoner in transit to prison. As an overseas police adviser sitting in a restaurant in Addis Ababa with his wife, a colleague and his wife, John saw a hand grenade come to a standstill just inches away from his legs and he expected to die, but miraculously survived. Flown back to the UK for treatment he had his moments of fame, appearing on TV news and on the Big Breakfast show on Channel 4. Attending a presentation function at the Café Royal, he sat next to Lois Maxwell, the original Miss Moneypenny and the lady on whom her character was based.

Press your chin hard against your throat. Now turn your head to the left and lift your left shoulder until it touches your ear. Keep your chin against your throat, your left ear against your left shoulder, contract your neck and shoulder muscles as tightly as you can and hold it like that for the rest of your life. That's right. Eat like that, brush your teeth like that, drive like that and keep your head like that when you go to sleep at night. This is what psychiatrists in South Africa did to me and they expect me to live like that for the rest of my life.

Humanity has long dreamed of travelling and settling among the stars. The fact is that like any other star, the Sun, will one day succumb to gravity and run out of its primary fuel, hydrogen. When this happens, life on earth will become impossible, as the sun envelops our planet. Understandably then, many have considered the possibility of colonising planets beyond our solar system in order to ensure the survival of 'Earthians' (my moniker for humans born on planet Earth) beyond the fixed lifetime of our sun. Zoom or Doom imagines such a journey but on a far grander scale - expanding beyond our galaxy. Marx Afaro Zytan, an oddball who appears nervous while relaxed but serene when nervous, is a ruthless man and an inhabitant of planet Zist. The book follows his story, which revolves around the revolutionary scientific discovery of a special type of fuel system that can transform matter into energy. This not only enables the possibility of light-speed travel for space-ships, but intergalactic travel and even time travel.
