There comes a time when you must put things in writing before they are forgotten and lost forever. That even applies today in spite of the highly advanced society we live in. In this rural community on the river banks of the Rio Grande in the early 1900s when illiteracy predominated, the history and identity of its residents were preserved by story-telling. These "cuentos" often left much to the imagination but still were very entertaining, vivid and memorable (not to be confused with tall-tales).One of the very first stories that I remember hearing was that of a bigger-than-life character who happened to be my grandfather, Don Juan. We were all fascinated by how this man was able to win the admiration and respect of his neighbours at least enough to have stories told about him. Although they were all survivors, they were also all interdependent, and looked for an orientation that could make them believe in themselves. In spite of the many and varied challenges they confronted, many like Don Juan provided a perspective of right and wrong, of commitment to family, of surviving untold suffering, but also of purpose to continue. This story provides a sampling of how this rural community in "El Capote" ranch sought its own destiny from the bare essentials that the river lands could provide. Don Juan may not have been a legend, but he was a pilar of strength, faith and loyalty to a way of life many had no choice but to embrace.

Young and old alike find snow globes irresistible. It's so tempting to hold these glass domes in your hands, to shake them gently or turn them upside down. They call to mind winter wonderland scenes, favorite childhood toys and most of all, the places we have visited around the world. In Snow All Over the Globe, Shelley Harwayne and her grandson Ben Harwayne pay tribute to these treasured collectibles. By sharing the history and science connected to snow globes, they have enriched the role snow globes play in our lives. Readers will discover what snow globe makers have done to prevent the water in the globe from freezing, how they experimented with different materials to make realistic fake snowflakes, and how they managed to make those snowflakes fall slowly. Additionally, readers will learn about the very first snow globe and the changes in the production of snow globes over the years. Along the way, readers will delight in learning which presidents collected snow globes, when snow globes have popped up in movies and television shows and some of the more surprising uses of snow globes. Salt and pepper shakers, pencil sharpeners, and music boxes are among the many novelty snow globes that have been manufactured.Whether you own dozens of snow globes, just a few or even long to purchase your very first one, this book will make you proud to be an admirer of snow globes.

Throughout our history Americans have embraced the myth that our national debt is immoral and destructive. This deeply rooted belief goes back to our Founding Fathers: Jefferson excoriated debt as "the greatest of dangers to be feared." Andrew Jackson demonized debt as "a national curse." Current political leaders continue to endorse this negative view of our national debt. Obama said that incurring debt was "irresponsible" and "unpatriotic." John McCain condemned it as "generational theft." In this book, the prize-winning economics professor Arthur Benavie, demonstrates in clear and non-technical language that belief in this myth has repeatedly blocked our federal government from creating jobs and investing in our children's future.Benavie describes the many occasions, including from the administrations of FDR to Obama, where our leaders were faced with severe political retribution at the mere suggestion that their policies would increase the national debt.Belief in this myth presents a continuing danger to the wellbeing of our children and grandchildren. Benavie examines several ways to disempower it.

An outbreak of twelve gruesome, unsolved murders from the 1800s seems an excellent choice for Jay Dalton to try out his hand at writing. Doing so as he is starting life over after a painful divorce in a peaceful, rural farmhouse, in which he had recently moved, seems delightful. All would not stay as it seems for long. The quaintness of his old farm house quickly fades as he becomes more aware that he isn't alone in his new abode. A series of journals Jay discovers provide unexpected research results for his book, even as they seem to come more and more ominously to life. But it is a series of "accidents" that are most troublesome, as it seems that someone intends for Jay to never finish his book.As Jay digs deeper, he begins to suspect that the unsolved murders, the hauntings in his house, and his current peril may be more closely connected than he would have ever suspected. How good he is at putting the pieces together may just determine if he lives to write about it.

A Widow's Awakening tells the story of how Krista triumphed through a fairy-tale love that quickly became a toxic, turned fatal marriage at an early age, and how losing a husband at 23 years old transformed her outlook and attitude on life. With the many highs and lows of any marriage, she had to learn to live with the physical and emotional abuse that came with being married to an addict. As she coped in a marriage based around alcohol and drug addiction, she had to overcome her own battles of misuse to regain her life.Struggling through battles of addiction and mental health issues, with not only herself but loved ones, her journey through the years taught her a great deal on healing, self-awareness, and self-love. After shutting out many emotions for years throughout her childhood, she had to relearn to be vulnerable and open with herself and others.Krista spent her childhood lacking the emotional guidance most children learn which left her fighting to understand her emotions for many adolescent years. Feeling empty for so long, she searched for any relationship that would make her feel whole but found it in all the wrong places. Learning to rely on her own individual capabilities was something that took years to adapt to as she went through many obstacles to find her inner strength.Krista wrote this book in hopes that other people struggling with similar situations would be able to relate to the hardships that can happen in life and to gain a spiritual perspective to become resilient.

Les Appels du Vide is a collection of short poems honouring the jarring, shocking and thought provoking nature of grief. Grief intrudes the stitching of the fabrics that make up our lives. These thoughts provoked within us are as revolutionary to our characters as they are shocking, and instinctively we repress them. This book honours them and brings them into the light instead.

"Women like myself!" I saluted to a rousing reception."We are here!" the women chorused. I stood in the middle of the women. They gathered around me on all sides at the square entrance of Eke-oha market."Women like myself!!""We are here!!""Women like myself!!!""We are here!!!" They responded a third time."Today, the wind has blown, and we can now see the behind of the fowl. We now know that these white rulers do not like us, and our men do not like us too.""Who bears nine months of labor pains?""We do, we do.""Who bears all the labor of housework and raising the children?""We do, we do.""Who tends the men and nourishes all their desires?""We do, we do.""Women like myself!""We are here!""We shall not be counted. We will not pay tax. We will not pay tax because we bear the children and we bear the fire of kitchen coals on our palms.""It is the truth, it is the truth.""Where the rat eats is where it falls. The men must tell us why the hen must always be spread-eagled for the randy cockerel.""Today, we will burn down the courthouse, and we will have their red caps."The women needed no more prodding. My last statement had aroused their anger.

God's Presence in Creation: A Conversation with Philo, Paul, and Luke is for anyone who has an interest in understanding how the authors of the New Testament perceived the world as God's creation, our home from "the beginning" (Gen 1:1). The book lucidly engages in conversation three 1st century CE authors Philo, Paul, and Luke, to offer a new and fresh understanding of the environmental theme, care for creation. The inclusion of Philo, a Hellenistic Jew and philosopher, adds uniqueness to the distinctive approach of this book and enriches the discussions of the two New Testament authors, Paul and Luke. Four "environmental" Greek terms are carefully analyzed- kosmos (world), ktisis (creation), pronoia (providence), and oikonomos (steward)- to show how these authors viewed the created world within their own Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts. The analysis is enhanced with an impressive exploration of a threefold relationship: creation-and-God, creation-and-mediator, creation-and-humanity.

Harry Jones, an American Special Forces veteran, and Hakim al-Boulos, a Yemeni freedom fighter, are joined together to execute missions into Saudi Arabia to dissuade the Saudis from bombing civilian areas in Yemen. Harry must help Hakim manage his team as they are buffeted by fickle winds blowing in Washington DC. Winds that disrupt the original reason the NSA supported the interdiction mission utilizing Hakim's group. The vast empty spaces in both Yemen and Saudi Arabia are the background for action, while the urban areas of Chicago, Houston and Washington DC, along with forested New England, represent the perceived superiority of America. The novel is based on US and Saudi Arabian involvement in Yemen's civil war, which has killed thousands of people. The story isn't ideological in presentation but is strongly character driven, as people are reacting to situations beyond their control.

Despite conventional medicine and pharmaceuticals, there is a growing trend toward seeking more natural forms of healing and health maintenance. Pharmaceuticals can have harsh side-effects, and many times pharmaceuticals cannot be used to treat certain types of illness. For example, if someone has a viral infection, antibiotics cannot be used to treat that infection. I have worked with many patients with varying ailments and health concerns, treating them with natural or homeopathic remedies. From my experience working with these patients, it is evident that, when used properly and with insight, natural and homeopathic prescriptions can work as well or even better than conventional medicine and pharmaceuticals. This book is not meant to replace your family physician, but it is a guide to healthier living through wiser food consumption. I believe if people used naturopathic and homeopathic remedies, overall health would increase and the need to go to doctors, specialists, and surgeons would decline significantly. Here's to a happy, healthy life; naturally.

This book weaves glimpses of some of the author's experiences; intertwined with the experiences of friends, family and acquaintances; in his half-century journey to understand the impact of oppression and trauma on his life and the country. The author explores how the murder of his young friend Matthew Shepard, and being briefly thrust into the national spotlight, affected the direction and focus of that journey. The book chronicles his movement from the deafening silence of growing up in the "don't ask don't tell" environment of Wyoming; through that horrific murder; and into decades of painstakingly slow, positive, change toward social justice; accompanied by a growing negative backlash culminating in "don't say gay" and other hate-based legislation.
