Once one of the largest townships in Bucks County, Rockhill was founded in 1740. In 1890, the area was separated and became East and West Rockhill Townships. The communities are renowned for their scenic beauty and many historic sites, including covered bridges, mills, one-room schoolhouses, and churches. The area is home to historic Ridge Valley, Almont, Naceville, and the Lake House Inn. A well-known recreational area, it contains both Tochickon Creek and Nockamixon State Parks. The townships even have their famous residents in Lee Felbinger, author of three books about the Lone Ranger, and Ruth Richards of the Georgia Peaches, portrayed in the movie A League of their Own. Grand View Hospital, which has played an integral part in the community since its founding in 1913, continues to manage the health care of the surrounding communities.

The histories of Roxbury and Bridgewater are intertwined, as both communities developed from settlement to ecclesiastical society to incorporated town. Both were once part of larger adjoining towns, with Bridgewater originally known as Shepaug Neck and Roxbury first named Shepaug Plantation. Shepaug is a Mohegan word meaning "rocky river" and was taken from the name of the river that runs through Bridgewater and forms Roxbury's western border. While settlers first plowed the land, they also built homes, schools, and churches and constructed gristmills, blacksmith shops, hat factories, tobacco warehouses, taverns, and general stores. Townsmen mined iron ore and quarried stones in the hills. Over time, the horse and buggy gave way to railroads and automobiles as modes of transportation between the towns, while new inventions gave locals free time for entertainment and civic pursuits.

Incorporated in 1854, Silverton sits at the eastern edge of the Willamette Valley and gives way to the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. It was built along Silver Creek, a location used for countless years by native people. As the town grew, it became a shipping center for the timber and agricultural industries of the area. During the early part of the 20th century, Silverton's mills helped supply the nation with lumber. Like many small towns, Silverton has changed with the times, but it has retained its small-town feel as a vibrant community with a diverse population. The community has nurtured many talents over the years, including political cartoonist Homer Davenport and astronaut Donald Pettit.

Point Mugu has played a major part in naval history since 1943, when a small group of U.S. Navy Seabees and several newly organized amphibious units headed across the Oxnard Plain to establish an advance base training facility. Toward the end of World War II, the small naval air base began testing newly developed guided missiles, pilotless aircraft, and special weapons to combat kamikaze pilots. This early testing transitioned Point Mugu from a temporary base into a pioneer in the world of science and national defense. On October 1, 1946, the Naval Air Missile Test Center Point Mugu and, later, the Pacific Missile Range were established to create, research, and test weapons systems. Point Mugu continues to support many diverse military missions, including testing weapons systems, operating space satellite systems, and providing radar and communication support to the naval aviation community.

Listed on the local Tacoma Register, the Washington Heritage Register, and the National Register of Historic Places, the North Slope is the largest residential historic district in Washington. Perched atop Job Carr's Hill, it is a trapezoid with streets at an angle, or sloped, to the grid designed by city planners. The bulk of the neighborhood was built on a 166-acre farm belonging to the Carr family. Purchased in the 1860s from the federal government, it was sold in the 1880s for residential development. The first homes in the North Slope were built from 1888 to 1893 for tycoons, bankers, and railroad men. Renowned residents included Gov. Ernest Lister, John Q. and Virginia Mason, and Bing Crosby, who was born in the North Slope and baptized at St. Patrick's Church.

Nestled along the Eel River in Northern California's Humboldt County, Fortuna has changed and grown according to economic and historical forces. Harvesting, milling, and shipping of redwood lumber provided the economic mainstay for nearly 100 years. The fertile Eel River Valley became known for its apples, potatoes, and a large dairy industry. Relative isolation ended in 1914 with the completion of the railroad from San Francisco, and in the 1920s expanded automobile traffic brought growing numbers of tourists to the redwood forests. "Friendly Fortuna" is a city of celebrations, known for its annual rodeo, first held in 1921. Organizations such as the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, founded in 1904, form the heart of the community. The Pacific Lumber Company town of Scotia, the now-vanished mill town of Newburg, and other neighboring communities such as Fernbridge--born in 1911 to house the men building what would become the world's longest concrete bridge--have also woven their stories into the tapestry of Eel River Valley history.

Millville had always been known for its glassmaking, but with the outbreak of World War II, the community's identity was primed to change forever. A private civilian airfield gave way to the creation of America's first defense airport, the training ground for the U.S. Army's Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and Republic P-47 Thunderbolt pilots. Bright and brave young men from across the country converged on Millville in the early 1940s to learn to fly and fight for freedom. Some died in training; others flew into history as heroes. While in Millville, they lived the average lives of the country's military men, playing baseball, flirting with the girls at the local USO dances, and attending Sunday night dinners with local families, creating lifelong friendships in a time when a young man's life expectancy was in the hands of America's enemies.
