Since 1823, Noblesville has served as the county seat for Hamilton County, Indiana. Located on the White River just north of Indianapolis, Noblesville grew from rural beginnings, changing as businesses and industry moved into the area, which was encouraged by the discovery of natural gas. This book documents the history, community life, and growth of Noblesville using stories and photographs collected from local residents, historians, church archives, the Hamilton County Historical Society, and the Hamilton East Public Library. The Sandusky Plains were once home to wandering bands of Wyandot and Delaware Native Americans, and early settlers endured a hard pioneer life. William Crawford led his famous expedition here in 1782, and Fort Ferree was built during the War of 1812. Over the years, Wyandot County has been home to many other important events and people. Astronaut Neil Armstrong attended Upper Sandusky Junior High, and Upper Sandusky High School held the first all-night prom in 1948, which was featured in Look magazine. The famous television comedian Cliff Arquette haled from Carey, and Lovell is close to one of the largest solar fields east of the Mississippi River. Cedar Lake has been home to Indians, pioneers, industrialists, hotelkeepers, and more. At the center of town is a 787-acre body of water also called Cedar Lake. In 1882, the Monon Railroad laid tracks along the western lakeshore. In winter, the Armour brothers, John G. Shedd, and the Howkinsons harvested lake ice and loaded it on trains bound for Chicago meatpacking houses. Tourists, and sometimes scoundrels, soon discovered this summer playground. They came by rail or buggy for fresh air and country-fried chicken. During the hotel era, nearly 50 establishments provided lodging overlooking the lake. Entertainment was provided in over-the-water dance halls offering big-name performers like Stan Kenton, the Beach Boys, and Lawrence Welk. Entrepreneur Samuel C. Bartlett recognized opportunity and bought up acreage. He set up a real estate office to sell lots and cottages. But the boom time passed, and the town has become predominantly residential.
