We inhabit the same world Jesus did-one of pain, joy, surprise, suffering, and wonder. At times life is good, joyous, and fair. At other times it's dreary, unfair, and hard. We may pray with little sense that God is listening. In many ways, divine silence is part of this life. It ca n be deeply unsettling when we have been wronged, misrepresented, defrauded, violated, or betrayed. Inwardly or perhaps vocally, we cry out for divine justice. To hear nothing in response is difficult, even disorientating. In this work, Douglas addresses questions we all ponder:¿ How long should we keep praying if God is not answering?¿ If a person with mental illness commits suicide, can God have mercy on them?¿ What about tsunamis, floods, and other "acts of God"?¿ Why does God allow the death of the innocent?¿ Why wouldn't an all-powerful and all-loving God prevent humans from doing evil?¿ Is there purpose in suffering and can good come from it?

In this short consideration of Watchmen, Dr. Julian Darius considers this seminal work in context, helping readers place Watchmen within the comics tradition. It's the perfect introduction to the work for students and readers new and old. Also included is Darius's celebrated "58 Varieties: Watchmen and Revisionism," which contextualizes Watchmen within the project of superhero revisionism. In World Literature Today, Rob Vollmar wrote, "Julian Darius's '58 Varieties: Watchmen and Revisionism' is a loving psychedelic romp... that uses a deconstructionist's lens to dissect and reassemble every aspect of the story."

About the Marlette Water Systems. Water was stored in wooden tanks and sent through pipes into the towns. Virginia City had become America's greatest producer of high grade silver and gold ore. On May 12, 1862 the water companies combined to form the Virginia and Gold Hill Water Company. In the early 1870's the Virginia and Gold Hill Water Company realized they needed more water to supply the cities domestic and mining needs as a drought was starting to threaten the cities. "I started out taking pictures of this pristine area just for myself, but it morphed into something bigger and I became interested in the history of the water system. Then I decided to incorporate this history into a picture book that I was putting together for myself. I have traveled all the roads involved in the water system, from Marlette to Virginia City, Nevada and it has been quite a trip. I am excited to share this experience with other people as the Marlette area provides beauty and tranquility." From the author Julie Michler

If Only Suomi is a story of love through time. At first thought, the difference between past, present and future may seem obvious. The past has happened, the present is now and the future has yet to come. Second by second, our future becomes our past. That is if time is linear and we travel in a straight line. But what if we could travel in time, your past can become your future or your future can become your past? What if your future could become your past? What sort of paradox could we create? How careful would one have to be to avoid even wiping oneself out of time altogether? What if you went back in time and fell in love, then had to return to the present, leaving your love behind? What if you could travel back and change your past to change the present and your future or even to live your life a second time? This is a story of how the future changed the past, when Al from 2028 travels back to 1972, just for three days. This is a science fiction story and a romance, for Al falls in love in 1972 and then has to return to 2028 without his beloved Suomi. Will they ever meet again? Time can sometimes work wonders. Most books are considered to be fiction or non-fiction or a combination, written before or after the events therein. Those are either historical, which can include a lot of speculation and guesswork; simply made up, futuristic, speculative, prophecies or wishful thinking. This book is all of that. It's questionable when exactly it was written. It is clearly written after events in the author's life, but both before and after the present day. in 2020, on our calendars. It includes memories and dreams, prophecies and wishful thinking. In fact, some sort of time travel. If only in the mind. So what is the difference between dreams and memories? We can have memories of dreams and dreams of memories. We can have dreams within dreams. What is the difference between reality and illusions or imagination? Dreams can seem very real and what we normally call reality can often seem unreal. Ancient religions tell us that the world is nothing but an illusion, just at twinkle in the eye of the Creator, a cutting from the fingernail of Krishna, 'Maya'." All the world's a stage. And all the men and women merely players." wrote William Shakespeare. As children we sang "Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream, Merrily merrily, merrily, merrily, Life is but a dream."Modern-day scientists may tell us that the whole Universe and everything around us, even our own bodies, is made of subatomic particles, too small to see with the naked eye, and waves, that sometimes it may be a particle and sometimes a wave, wave-particle duality and, according to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, we can never say exactly when and where a particle is. They say that it is mostly space and that it is our senses and brains that put it all together so we can live in it. In other words; an illusion. Others even say that technically it is all holographic! We are not actually here at all!And some religious folk who believe in an all-powerful God may say that it was all made not so long ago, to look like it is much older, like a film set or a game of Dungeons and Dragons. Then there are dreams within dreams.

There is a substantial body of work emerging currently, seeking to address the problems caused by the economic model that has dominated the world for the last several hundred years - not least the negative impacts on the environment and sustainable health of the biosphere. This book adds to that body of literature, and brings an interesting new set of ideas into play. The author offers an approach to the philosophies and politics of nature based on a reinterpretation of the history of capitalism, in particular its concept of capital. It leads to a new anti-capitalist conception of the philosophy of ecology which takes into account at the same time history, ethics, politics, law and economics.By linking philosophy, law, economics and management, this work seeks to go beyond the mono-disciplinary and purely theoretical approaches which often characterize works devoted to the philosophy of nature, or the philosophy of ecology. It proposes a concrete philosophical alternative to modern capitalism which leads to ecological co-management and care at all levels of society, including that of political bodies, and the reform of constitutions and parliaments. In short, it is a book for a theory and a practice of environmental action in the broad sense within the framework of an institutional revolution passing in particular through the heart of the capitalist system.

"This book examines Spinoza's ontological argument and introduces the concept of "paradoxical singularity." It explores the ways in which Spinoza's ontology establishes a framework in which singular things are, paradoxically, differentiated through intersecting causes. The book argues that Spinoza's ontological argument functions at once as a philosophical, religious, and political ethos in which interpretation is inseparable from cooperation. This emphasizes a connection between the productions of knowledge (interpretation) and the way of life (ethos) that those productions involve and express. Recommended for scholars interested in Spinoza's influence on post-structuralism, trans-individuality, and the history of secular religious thought." --

The main focus of interest in this book are the figures of writers and writing subjects in Rushdie's oeuvre who contemplate and reflect on the nature and purpose of their craft, their authorial identity and their positioning in society and intellectual history, though their writing. It discusses the aesthetics of the texts they produce, and their subsequent agency in the world through the various ways they are interpreted and appropriated. Authorship is a special category of storytelling; a specific craft and vocation giving expression to a conscious and purposeful project. The book focuses on what postcolonial literature specialist Dr Jane Poyner calls "the ethics of intellectual practice" as the major theme pervading Rushdie's entire corpus of writing; fictional, essayistic and autobiographical). The key audience for the book is, primarily, students of postcolonial literature, and of Salman Rushdie's work in particular. It will also be of interest to readers wishing to get a deep insight into the works of one of the most prominent, and most controversial, contemporary writers --

"The criminal justice system has morphed from a harshly punitive system to a distinctively more rehabilitative and restorative one focusing on supporting victims and changing offender behavior. A variety of collaborative actors from police, courts, and corrections partner with social workers, psychologists, and community members who rely heavily on a civil law approach similar to alternative dispute resolution (ADR). While much of these innovations within criminal justice have been evolving over the last several decades, students in criminal justice programs rarely hear much, if anything, about them. This textbook seeks to address these gaps in the literature through the traditional Criminal Justice Ethics course with a case study approach."

WHAT ANY NORMAL PERSON WOULD DO From the author of the popular online blog Mydangblog comes this compilation of strange stories, wacky adventures, and weird and wonderful thoughts. Topics range from the sublime (bizarre online ads and forklift fantasies) to the ridiculous (worst case scenarios and more clocks than you can count), to the even more ridiculous (haunted bathrooms and questionable quizzes). Suzanne Craig-Whytock's absurdist sense of humour was borne out of a childhood spent watching Monty Python combined with a natural tendency towards anxiety and OCD, and it's on full display within these pages. She may not be good at math (among a lot of other things) but she's certainly mastered the art of laughing at herself, and now you can laugh right along with her. The poems in Sean Akerman's Bridges, Night survey the ruins of late empire. Red-lit refineries, ghostly motels, empty train tracks, rainy highways, and mournful fields come in and out of focus on an ambulatory journey through a depopulated midwest. After traversing rusted-out towns and bridges, the poems turn their attention to the people who call these places home, whose hearts and dreams flourish and give way. Bridges, Night offers more than stolen glimpses into a modern wasteland, however. Life finds a way of continuing on. Birds nest in the gutters of abandoned homes, herds return to blast sites, foxes appear in clearings, hands reach out for hands. Like the mythological Phoenix rising from the ashes to soar on the wings of new life, the poems that conclude the collection, composed as a cycle of ghazals, lift disappointment and decay into amatory song, fusing a fragmented world into a meaningful pattern.-Andrew McCarron, author of Mysterium and The Ballad of Sara and Thor

No other living poet extends the work of Sam Hamill like Katie Sarah Zale. The depth of feeling (often elegiac) and the fierce commitment to justice (gender, environmental and societal). There aren't enough poems like this in the world.-Paul E Nelson, A Time Before Slaughter, Founder: Cascadia Poetics Lab, Literary Executor for Sam Hamill "What is there to do about all the violence?" asks Zale in her opening poem "Bread," setting the tone of this weighty collection. But there is lightness too, the weight of a leaf falling in the face of grief. It is the hopeful lightness that helps us to cope with all the darkness ... it is especially the light touch of the poet's lyrical precision that makes these poems so memorable. Describing the last hanging in Michigan, Zale writes, "I am the twisted neck and rise and fall of final breaths," but I am also "the ink that changes the law" ... "a voice protesting" and "a flower unfolding."-Gene Twaronite, The Museum of Unwearable Shoes and Shopping Cart Dreams Her poems reach into the violence of our times and shine a tender spotlight on nature, paving the way for us to find resilience by seeking truth.-Sheila Bender, Since Then: Poems and Short ProseA resonance of peril energizes these poems ... The Weight of a Leaf is the weight of what is written to testify and celebrate ... the struggle to affirm that all lives matter.-Carolyne Wright, Pablo Neruda and Blue Lynx Prizes, American Book Award, Pushcart PrizeAn unflinching look at the world without judgment: what we notice, what we pass by, what we hear ... what we wonder about-"sunflowers / lying dead in Ukraine." Katie writes with beautiful imagery and music and invites us to gather our own words. In "September 24, 1830: The Last Hanging in Michigan," each line begins with "I am." If we speak up and say what kind of person we are, we answer the question. This is a brave book.-Eleanor Kedney, Between the Earth and Sky
