En alguna de mis novelas anteriores me propuse establecer la influencia ejercida por las circunstancias sobre el carácter. En la presente historia he invertido el proceso. Mi meta ha sido señalar aquí la influencia ejercida por el carácter sobre las circunstancias. La conducta seguida por una muchacha ante una emergencia insospechada constituye el cimiento sobre el que he levantado esta obra. Idéntico propósito es el que me ha guiado en el manejo de los otros personajes que aparecen en estas páginas. El curso seguido por su pensamiento y su acción en medio de las circunstancias que los rodean resulta, tal como habría ocurrido muy probablemente en la vida real, unas veces correcto, otras equivocado. Acertada o falsa su conducta, no dejan en ningún instante de regir la acción de aquellas partes del relato que les incumben a cada uno, frente a cualquier evento.

Esta es la historia de lo que puede resistir la paciencia de la Mujer y de lo que es capaz de lograr la tenacidad del Hombre. Born to a London painter, William Collins, and his wife, the family moved to Italy when Collins was twelve, living there and in France for two years, so that he learned Italian and French. He worked at first as a tea merchant. On publishing his first novel, Antonina, in 1850, Collins met Charles Dickens, who became a friend and mentor. Some Collins works appeared first in Dickens's journals Household Words and All the Year Round. The two also collaborated on drama and fiction.

They were not able to get legal protection so their rightful hesitance was seized by their wicked relatives. Both sisters' opinion is entirely different for their fight. Magdalene decides to get heritance by any means while Norah wants to get it by goodness and fairness. In the end Norah wins the fight .
