Wilhelm Wundt war ein deutscher Psychologe, Physiologe und Philosoph, der als einer der Begründer der experimentellen Psychologie gilt. Er wurde am 16. August 1832 geboren und verstarb am 31. August 1920. Wundt interessierte sich auch für die Verbindung zwischen Psychologie und Philosophie. Seine Arbeit trug dazu bei, die Psychologie als eigenständige wissenschaftliche Disziplin zu etablieren und beeinflusste Generationen von Psychologen. "Erlebtes und Erkanntes " ist seine Autobiografie.

Die Philosophie hat ihren Inhalt "mit der Gesamtheit der Wissenschaften gemein, aber sie nimmt einen anderen Standpunkt der Betrachtung ein, indem sie den Zusammenhang der Tatsachen und Begriffe ins Auge fasst; sie gliedert sich demnach in zwei Hauptteile: die Erkenntnislehre und die Prinzipienlehre (oder Metaphysik). Die Prinzipienlehre hat eine negative und eine positive Aufgabe: die Kritik der in jeder Wissenschaft steckenden metaphysischen Voraussetzungen sowie die Berichtigung und Ergänzung der metaphysischen Hypothesen" (System der Philosophie, 1897, S. 33).
