Preface In a small Côte d'Azur village with a hotel, a beach and fishermen, a blind boy and Manon, the daughter of a gruff baker, hang out on the beach daily with the village children, from the age when they were toddlers. And yet they live still in a world of their own.Timo, although deprived of eyesight, is gifted with insight. He can tell intricate stories that captivate children as well as adults. That's how in the summer of 1957 they meet Sofie, a slowly dying girl of their age. He discovers what she lacks and shares with her his daily breakfast of fried "fruits de mer" he gets from the fishermen. Sofie recovers.Timo "sees" with his hands and one day Manon permits him to "see" her ripening body. So does Sofie. They taste loveand promise each other to marry the three of them. There is no proof this particular story did ever happen, but no proof either it didn't.There are famous lovers in literature and art, like Romeo and Juliet. So why should this story be different?Purity has it own ways to stand out in the Akasha Chronicles and to reach the "fantasy" of writers who are acquainted with this purity and long for it. Because longing is a strong magnet.

Indochina, 1951. Tonkin and northern Annam have been liberated from the French by the Vietminh. In the south, the French army and navy are fighting a vicious battle to keep the corrupt regime in Saigon in power. It began for Ruben with a dream about puzzling meanings of floating bamboo braids. We meet him in Nha Trang, an Annamese port town where he debarkes from a French ocean liner, in search of a monastery that should be somewhere in the mountains of Annam. It was not the only reason for his quest: he had inherited a chest with unusual contents: a little skeleton, not of a child. Accompanying the chest was a manuscript - played into his hands by an old librarian - of a relative who had not survived the war. In it, his ancestor mentioned a monastery of the unknown order of Zong. A Chinese word, he would later find out, but the order seemed to be Japanese.... He engages a boy in Nha Trang to be his guide. Nguyen takes him to his grandmothers compound, where he lives with his mother Yen.Ruben blends into Annamese life, trekking through forests and mountains with Nguyen and later with Yen; they travel by smuggling ships, old junks and rattling coasters from North to South and back again, across a war-torn country.
