Common Sense Supply ManagementGet incredible control of your supply chain! Dr. Tom DePaoli in Common Sense Supply Management presents a practical guide to supply chain management and process improvement. He shares invaluable insights by captivating stories. If you dislike consultants, buzzwords and theories, this non-traditional book is meant for you. You will not be able to put the book down until you have finished the supply chain management adventure. Visit Dr. Tom books.comIt includes: - How to build relationships throughout the supply chain.- A roadmap to transform your supply chain.- Best practices and metrics suggestions.- Proven supplier tactics.- Sourcing, negotiation and training advice.Don't let your supply chain ruin your bottom line for one more day! Some comments about the book: I read this book with a fairly tenuous grasp of logistics, and most of that knowledge was gleaned from reading other books. One thing I've noticed many books on Six Sigma and Lean lack are stories that illustrate the principles. Without stories, it all seems like fluff. Dr. DePaoli draws from his extensive experience in the area of supply chain management to show newbies the ropes (which can be overwhelming) and give more seasoned members of the industry strategies for success and pitfalls to avoid. Highly recommend it!The tales consist of easy to read short stories on such topics as negotiations, building relationships, benchmarking, supplier relationship management, and eprocurement. In one, DePaoli relates why beating suppliers constantly doesn't work. In another, he explains how managers can earn trust of their employees. A third looks at why women excel at managing relationships with suppliers. Being entertained by good storytelling with a purpose is why I highly recommend Dr Tom DePaoli's book to not only the sourcing professional but also to anyone in a role that touches procurement, purchasing, supply chain, etc. Common Sense Supply Management is a great primer for the new hire as well as one with experience. For the new hire it will help them get into the right mind set. For the experienced it will"sharpen the saw" as a refresher while more importantly serve as a sanity check when taking a step back from the daily grind. Personally, Dr.DePaoli's insight on information-based negotiation is invaluable and affirmed the approach we take where I work.

Dr. Tom DePaoli covers a variety of topics for his readers to enjoy. I especially like how Dr. Tom uses personal experiences and examples to enhance the points he is trying to make to his readers. The book Avoiding A Supply Chain Apocalypse, there are suggestions about making improvements, how to do things in the supply chain industry, and of course, to learn from mistakes. One tip is to do storyboards, Dr. Tom mentions the concept at the beginning of the book and then dedicates an entire chapter to storyboards for his readers to obtain a better understanding. Dr. Tom stresses that trust is an essential trait for all good leaders and all business deals. In conclusion, Dr. Tom succeeds in his premise. My favorite new idea from the book is 'appreciative inquiry' defined by Dr. Tom as a systematic discovery process to search for what is best in an organization or its strengths. The value of this to procurement and supply chain professionals is in the alteration is can lead to in how we are perceived and the expanded scope of what we can accomplish. Procurement often goes out into the organization to understand the inner workings of a category or process. We have as our goal the desire to improve how spend is managed or how execution takes place. With appreciative inquiry, we still evaluate categories and processes, but with a focus on finding what is good about them and emphasizing that. The difference is subtle; we still identify opportunities for improvement, but the focus is on positive change. The end result is that the people participating in such evaluations feel like they are being recognized for their accomplishments rather than audited for their errors.

Visit drtombooks.comFast track your process improvement strategy now!It includes: - Why Kaizens are a better faster option.- Fun training exercises.- An easy Kaizen roadmap.- Common Kaizen and process improvement mistakes to avoid.Comments about it: DePaoli also shares mistakes he's seen. A big one is having a sponsor who is not committed to Kaizen. "I've seen organizations build a team that's raring to go, but the sponsor drags his feet on implementation. Imagine what that does to credibility and morale." Another is that some people proceed without a full understanding of the tools. "It's difficult to teach and examine the process at the same time," DePaoli says. "I like to teach the tools before I do the Kaizen." He also likes to use common experiences in his teaching to make his point. In addition to the success stories and common mistakes, the book contains training exercises as well as a training presentation, a roadmap, tips, a glossary of terms and lots more. For organizations trying to streamline processes, the emphasis on efficiency over bureaucracy will be particularly relevant. In such cases, the future state or To-Be, ensures that the processes and guidelines put in place reduce the need for individual approvals for the majority of steps. Kaizens also recognize and incorporate the Voice of the Customer (VOC) as one of eleven steps. If you are not a Black or Green Belt (hint: they are the two of the highest levels of certification), no need to worry. Kaizen Kreativity provides enough background and templates to get started, although working with someone who has the appropriate experience never hurts.
