The laying of the Foundation Stone, lectures and addresses, discussion of the Statutes, Dornach, Dec. 24, 1923 - Jan. 1, 1924 (CW 260)"This anthroposophic movement is not an earthly service. This anthroposophic movement in its entirety, in all its details, is a service of the gods, a divine service." --Rudolf SteinerDuring Christmastime 1923, one year after the fiery destruction of the first Goetheanum, in a wooden carpentry shop overlooking the charred ruins Rudolf Steiner established the General Anthroposophical Society, to which he joined his destiny. This volume documents that occasion. Readers will find the complete proceedings of the conference, as well as Steiner's in-depth description of the structure and organization of the new Society. Discussions of the statutes are also recorded in detail. The laying of the Foundation Stone into the hearts of the members is at the center of this book. The foundation Stone Verse (or mantra) is reproduced in the different forms in which Steiner gave it each day of the conference along with his commentary on its different rhythms. Also included is Rudolf Steiner's lecture on plans for the second Goetheanum, illuminating the spiritual significance of its architecture, as well as his talk on the burning of the temple at Ephesus. This edition features a foreword and conclusion by Marie Steiner. The text is complemented by a list and biographical data of the members mentioned and reproductions of handwritten notes and blackboard sketches. This volume is a translation from German of Die Weihnachtstagung zur Begründung der Allgemeinen Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft (GA 260).

From the contents of this lecture: "Fairy tales and sagas are comparable to a good angel, granted human beings as a companion from birth on their life's wanderings, to be a trustworthy comrade throughout - offering comradeship, and making life inwardly into a truly ensouled fairy tale!"This is a lecture, given by Rudolf Steiner, entitled "Märchendichtungen im Lichte der Geistesforschung," and contained in the volume "Ergebnisse der Geistesforschung" (Results of Spiritual Research) GA 62. The series in which this lecture was given at the Architektenhaus in Berlin, may be said to underline its overall importance for Rudolf Steiner: Held February 6th 1913 subsequent to a lecture January 30th on Raphael, it was followed a week later, on February 13th, by a lecture on Leonardo da Vinci. In addition, "A Mongolian Legend," an excerpt from a matinee lecture given by Rudolf Steiner: "Mythen und Sagen. Okkulte Zeichen und Symbole" (Myths and Legends. Occult Signs and Symbols), is also included. This lecture is from GA 101, lecture IV, given on the 21st of October 1907 at Berlin.

The Theory of Heat; Second Scientific Course;14 lectures, Stuttgart, March 1-14, 1920 (CW 321)Following his first scientific course the previous year (The Light Course), in these lectures Rudolf Steiner discusses the nature of warmth, its relationship to the four states of matter, to light, to color, and to the subearthly and superearthly realms. He extends the modern ideas of physics through aspects of understanding achieved by spiritual science. With extensive notes and diagrams, this work comprises essential reference material for natural science teachers, as well as interested parents and anyone wanting a deeper understanding of a theory of heat and warmth based on spiriual science."The manifold new aspects of the subject presented placed the element of warmth within the great evolution of the cosmos and then traced it even into the phenomena of life, the concrete processes in the transformation of the states of aggregation in matter, and even into mathematical formulae.... Indications thus given were then worked out during the following years in the Research Institute and Laboratory at the Goetheanum and traced into numerous phenomena of the rhythms of the day and the year, phenomena of life, the most subtle influences in processes of crystallization, and they became useful in the later inaugurated agricultural work." --Guenther Wachsmuth, The Life and Work of Rudolf Steiner (p. 378)This volume is a translation from German of Geisteswissenschaftliche Impulse II zur Entwickelung der Physik II: Zweiter naturwissenschaftlicher Kurs: Die Wärme auf der Grenze positiver und negativer Materialität (GA 321).

6 lectures at The Hague, April 7-12, 1922; A written report by Rudolf Steiner on the course (CW 82)"There is no contradiction, if you look into the matter correctly, between destiny and freedom. However, in order to be able to present the concept of destiny to the world later on, it was first necessary that the concept of freedom be presented in the book The Philosophy of Freedom." -- Rudolf Steiner (lect. 6)Published here for the first time in English, these six public lectures are among Rudolf Steiner's most inspired--and inspiring--explorations of Anthroposophy as a true science of the spirit. Our age provides abundant explanations of the universe, its nature and evolution. But underlying most scientific modalities is a passive engagement with self and world, a taking-for-granted of the faculty of thinking, and, as a result, an indifferent arranging of phenomena through logical inference. But the question remains: What is thinking? A product of chemical processes in the brain, or a spiritual activity through which we become participants in a spiritual cosmos? This is Steiner's starting point in all his work. He aims to cast off the unnecessary limits imposed on knowledge by a science that fails to examine its most fundamental epistemological premises. The lectures here are a remarkable contribution to this lifelong project--a compelling, eloquent, insightful study and affirmation of our very humanness.Speaking to a youthful academic audience, Steiner does not confine himself to the arbitrary delineations of codified academic disciplines; on the contrary, he breaks down barriers, builds bridges, envisions a future academy in which the paths of knowledge are broadened through a genuine science of initiation to encompass our role as members and, ultimately, co-creators of the physical, soul, and spiritual universe."Those who seek to prove something show, through the very fact that they seek to prove it, that for them what must be proved is not readily perceptible. We actually seek to prove something whenever we have no direct perception of it.... When in older, instinctive cognition people had a perception of what they called the divine being, they did not need proofs. Historically, the proofs for the existence of God began only when the perception was lost. Evidence is required wherever there is no perception." -- Rudolf Steiner (lect. 6)This volume is a translation from German of Damit der Mensch ganz Mensch werde. Die Bedeutung der Anthroposophieim Geistesleben der Gegenwart (GA 82), 2nd ed., Rudolf Steiner Verlag, Dornach, Switzerland, 1994. Cover image: The Golden Cell by Odilon Redon, 1892. There was a time when a continent called Atlantis still lay between Europe and America. This portion of the world's surface was at one time land; this land now forms the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Plato alluded to the last remaining remnant of that lost continent when he sopke of the Island of Poseidon. Countless publications are dedicated to proving that Atlantis existed and attempt to discover the location of the Lost Continent. Here, accepting the existence of Atlantis, the author pontificates on the spiritual condition of soul attempts to indicate the inner nature of the conditions under which they lived. An interesting discourse on the evolution of the Atlantean and Leumurian race as revealed by the Akashic records.Atlantis was first mentioned in Plato's works Timaeus and Critias, written in 360 BC. Obtained from the Akashic Records and under the influence of the Theosofical Publishing Society, Steiner presents in this work the Akashic information available about Atlantis and Lemuria.

"Since the coming of Gautama Buddha, Eastern mystics have spoken especially about a future condition when earth will be bathed in a moral etheric atmosphere. Ever since the time of the ancient rishis, they had hoped that this moral impulse would come to earth from Vishva Karman (or from Ahura Mazda, as Zarathustra proclaimed). Eastern mysticism foresaw that this moral atmosphere would come to earth from the being we call the Christ. Eastern mystics had set their hopes on the being of Christ." -- Rudolf Steiner (p. 125)The first chapter of the Acts of the Apostles describes Christ's Ascension: "and a cloud received him out of their sight." As the disciples were looking up, two angels appeared and said, "the same Jesus, taken up from you into heaven, shall come again in the same way as you have seen him go."Starting in 1910, Rudolf Steiner initiated a series of lectures announcing the advent of Christ's appearance in the sphere of the earth's etheric or life body. This he said would begin between 1930 and 1940, but at first, only a few people would be aware of it. In time, more and more people--regardless of their religious affiliation--would be infused by Christ's living presence. Such "Damascus experiences," bespeaking a new natural clairvoyance, Steiner said, would become increasingly common. The Christ will become a living comforter. Though it may seem strange now, it is nevertheless true that even large numbers of people sitting together and wondering what to do will see the etheric Christ. He will be there and confer with them; he will cast his word into their gathering. We are approaching these times when this positive, constructive element will take hold of human evolution." -- Rudolf Steiner (p. 122)The lectures collected here on the second coming of Christ also contain significant related issues, such as spiritual science and etheric vision, the etheric vision of the future, the Sermon on the Mount and the land of Shambhala, the etherization of the blood, the mysteries of comets and the moon, Buddhism and Pauline Christianity, and the three realms between death and rebirth.

In 1920 Rudolf Steiner had already foreseen that the future imperialism would be economic rather than military or nationalistic. In these three lectures he describes the history of imperialism from ancient times to the present and into the future. The anglo-american would play an increasingly important role in future developments, so the English visitors who attended must have been especially attentive. These lectures are the 16th, 17th and 18th of 18 lectures in the lecture series entitled, Spiritual and Social Transformations in Human Evolution, published in German as, Geistige und Soziale Wandlungen in der Menschheitsenticklungen. They were given by Rudolf Steiner on February 20-22 1920, at Dornach, Switzerland. From Gasumptausgabe (collected works) #196.

'The present age needs to understand that human beings must hold the balance between the two extremes, between the ahrimanic and the luciferic poles. People always tend to go in one direction... The Christ stands in the middle, holding the balance.'- Rudolf SteinerThese eleven lectures were given in post-war Stuttgart against a backdrop of struggle and uncertainty - not only within society at large but also within the anthroposophical movement. Rudolf Steiner and his supporters were working to introduce 'threefold' social ideas and - given Steiner's public profile - were coming under increasing personal and sometimes physical attack.Steiner responds to this turbulent situation by revealing the spiritual background to the forces of decline working in contemporary civilization. He speaks of retrogressive powers - spiritual beings referred to as luciferic or ahrimanic - that work directly into human culture, manifesting, for example, in what he refers to as the 'initiation streams' of Western secret societies, the Church-allied impulse of Jesuitism and the Bolshevik force of Leninism. The spiritual agents of adversity also encourage polarised thinking and false opposites such as East verses West, materialism and mysticism, or knowledge and belief. Only the threefold principle - represented by Christ - allows us to create a balance in the midst of these existential conflicts. This freshly-reworked translation is complemented with notes, an index and an introduction by Matthew Barton.

'Suppose you have seen an event, have formed an idea about it, and you say something that is not true - in other words, something that is a lie. Then what flows from the object is correct and what flows from you is false and this collision is a terrible explosion; and each time you do this, you attach a gruesome being to your karma which you cannot get rid of again until you have made good what you lied about.' - Rudolf SteinerIn a previously-untranslated volume of lectures, Rudolf Steiner presents shattering insights regarding the interaction of human and spiritual beings. He speaks, for example, about how perfumes can give certain spirits access to people on earth, or how phantoms, spectres and demons can be created through human deficiencies - or even how the arts of architecture, sculpture, painting and music allow 'good' or 'hideous' entities to enter our world. As he states: 'Learning about the effects of spiritual beings is of much greater help than moral preaching. A future humanity willknowwhat it is creating through lies, hypocrisy and slander.'The lectures are divided into two broad thematic groups: the first relating to the inner path of knowledge and its relation to the yearly festivals, and the second focusing on the work of elemental beings in our everyday world. The 18 lectures are complemented with notes, an index and an introduction by Christian von Arnim.
