Like a virus, Liam has infected vampire Rodrigo with the tremendous excitement of living in the San Francisco Bay area: because Rodrigo has the fortitude to bear it. Their imminent union keeps the vampire motivated by an urgency to distract himself from his own inner turmoil, which releases anxiety quickly. But Luciferian/Satanic duality creeps mysteriously into the lives and dreams of characters to alter their reality.

Einar grew-up in the witch town Tella, Spain, among caterers and servants with not much privacy, little space, no need or capability to maintain secrets, and no awareness of his own personal failings or how they could be related. The psychiatrist's intense interest centers around the fact that little academic writing exists about ghost twins. While living in Tella, Spain, Einar went to another psychological counselor about this, who belittled him - expressing no empathy, knowledge or understanding of vanishing twins. His previous therapist emphasized that his twin was only a mass of cells and it was quite apparent not destined to survive, that his sensitivity and concern should be more directed toward his mother's miscarriage, instead - to not make such a big deal about it. Einar never discussed the matter, again, after feeling shamed. He sincerely feels the need for some respect, to be listened to, including maybe some sort of validation about his own grief and trauma.The modus operandi of "Embers of Einar: White Binder" is the elimination of inauthentic elements of the self in order to reach the core personality within. It's a serial form of vanishing act, like Einar's vanishing twin, thus the death of the archetypal (never-seen, only spoken-of) transgressive person to overtake the personality. For Einar this identification with the unthinkable is an act of defiance, a way of burying that shame about what is perfectly natural. Tension between losing himself and finding himself in others often overwhelms.

Part fairy tale, part horror story about characters who convince themselves they are alright. But at times the truth arrives and they can't get it off them -- and there is no answer, only a question. Liam's film contemplates the many forms of erotic desire and shifting genders that both Shakespeare's "Cymbeline" and mythology's "Ganymede" release through various disguises of erotic attachment -- encouraging gender disruptions through less permitted forms of desire. And the necromancer, capable of every wickedness, brings back spirits of the dead to fight for him. Undead Spanish poet/playwright Federico Garcia Lorca searches for a way to be human, again.

Einar casts a spell with art. Like witches, artists are creatures of ritual because of their acts of creation. His paintings come alive by reflecting the psychology of color imbued with magic. While living in San Francisco's most artistic community of Dogpatch and attending California College of the Arts, Einar's paintbrush functions as a wand to direct energy and intent into visual spells. Color is a level of darkness. We use color magic every day to invoke a magical response, usually without realizing the ritual, practicing more witchcraft than we think. Einar, like a majority of men involved in magic, is satisfied with being called a witch because it is spirituality, a spiritual path: a road he walks to nourish his soul, to commune with the Universe's life force as a way to better his own life. A raven arrives as the incarnation of Einar's dead twin brother. Through the raven, he learns that reality doesn't exist but must be pursued and won. Einar views the world as an existential psychoanalyst who uses the function of belief as the basis of his magic. Belief is a tool.
