Han föddes och växte upp i Edinburgh, där han också påbörjade utbildningar till ingenjör och inom juridik. Vid 25 års ålder lade han studierna åt sidan för att satsa på sitt författande. Han är mest känd för de klassiska verken "Dr Jekyll och Mr Hyde" och "Skattkammarön". Stevenson led av vacklande hälsa hela livet, hans barndom präglades av sjukdomen bronkit och avled han vid 44 års ålder av en hjärnblödning.
