God's intent is that through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to His eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord (Ephesians 3:10-11.) This book takes a fresh look at one prominent New Testament church, the church at Ephesus, to see how well they were fulfilling God's vision for His church. The Scriptures examined include a section of the book of Acts (when the church was founded), the book of Ephesians, further instructions in I and 2 Timothy, and God's letter to the Ephesian church in Revelation 2. God's intent for His church has not changed during the centuries. How well are our churches today showing forth God's wisdom?

This book is a commentary on Colossians, focusing on the role of spiritual wisdom and understanding as converts to the gospel transform into disciples.  How do people who have believed the gospel of Jesus Christ become people whose lives manifest the following character?...live a life worthy of the Lord, please Him in every way - bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that they have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father?  (Colossians 1:10-12)?Maybe the question is more personal: if you are someone who has believed the gospel, how can you become someone who lives that life?I have titled this book "The Spiritual Wisdom and Understanding of Colossians," because spiritual wisdom and understanding are keys to the transformation from being a convert to becoming a disciple.  Spiritual wisdom and understanding are not the only keys, but they are critical keys as revealed in Colossians 1:9-10.Study questions at the end of each chapter will facilitate review and application of the material discussed. This Proverbs workbook will help parents teach their children the practical wisdom of God. The issues discussed - money, friends, diligence, response to aggression, pride, discipline, etc. - are relevant to our daily lives and will arise in your family sooner or later. These lessons can help lay a foundation of godly values and guidelines for your children. Our family used the workbook when our children were 8 and 10 years old. Older children and adults will find no problem in being challenged by the material because these issues are in the heart, not the mind. The workbook has been used in several churches, in many families, and also by a high school senior class in practical living. Recently updated for publication, the Proverbs workbook would be a great addition to home school curriculum and could also be used by adult small groups to explore God's wisdom in the book of Proverbs. Dick Hockett and his wife Betty live in San Jose, CA, where they attend a local church. They have two married children and six grandchildren. Dick is retired from high-tech industry in Silicon Valley and has taught Bible studies for many years in California and in the Midwest.

The "better thans" of wisdom are intriguing and life-impacting. These are proverbs in the Wisdom Books of the Bible (Proverbs, Psalms, and Ecclesiastes) that present a contrast of two things - one "better than" the other. For example: Proverbs 16:19 "Better to be lowly in spirit and among the oppressed than to share the plunder with the proud." The choices we make around these "better thans" affect our relationship with God and with others. These choices determine how we live - whether we are encouraged or discouraged, peaceful or anxious, at rest or driven. This book is intended to provide some understanding of these "better thans" and to show why one choice is actually better than another. The book originated as a series of blogs on some of these "better thans." What started out as an intriguing activity to the author ended up having a major impact on him, as he began to reflect on his own life and understand the choices he had been making and the consequences of those choices. DICK HOCKETT and his wife Betty currently live in San Jose, CA, where they attend a local church. They have two married children and six grandchildren. Dick is retired from the high-tech industry in Silicon Valley and has taught Bible studies for many years in both California and in the Midwest.
