"Staten" av Platon är ett klassiskt verk som framställer filosofens syn på det ideala samhället och den rättfärdiga människan. I verket utgår Platon från ett samtida samhälle där filosofer anses vara överflödiga, både av de styrande och folket, och den attityden vill Platon ändra genom att upplysa om filosofins nödvändighet för rättrådigt handlande. Boken är en av Platons mest refererade verk och är skriven i dialogform, ofta med Sokrates i rollen som protagonist.Platon, 428 f.kr.-348 f.kr., var en grekisk filosof, matematiker och författare från Aten. Han är en av de mest inflytelserika personerna inom västerländsk filosofi och är upphovsman till platonismen. I sin ungdom tillhörde han även kretsen kring Sokrates. Majoriteten av Platons skrifter tros ha överlevt och finns tillgängliga idag, till skillnad från många andra antika författare.
