Il desiderio di un libro speciale intorno alle fonti dell¿Orlando Furioso nacque, credo, anzitutto nella mente di Giosuè Carducci. Da lui, in nome del Comitato che veniva preparando le feste del Centenario Ariosteo, io ebbi l¿invito a intraprenderlo. E la pubblicazione si sarebbe dovuta fare in occasione appunto del Centenario, ossia nel 1875; ma l¿estensione impensata del lavoro produsse un inevitabile ritardo, e il volume vide la luce solo nell¿anno successivo. Gli andava innanzi una prefazione, che mi giova riportare quasi per intero, non senza permettermi di ritoccarla dove di ritocchi abbia bisogno, senza l¿affettazione e l¿ingombro di segnalazioni speciali.
