Travis' survey of the history of production of Haviland dinnerware includes a listing of back marks and updated prices. She provides a brief history of the Haviland family, explains the process by which the china was made and decorated, and catalogs many patterns by Schleiger number (used by most Haviland matchers).

Travis, an expert on Haviland china, portrays the progress of this china in form and decoration from the formative years in the 1840s-1880s and on into the 20th century, which brought many changes to the Haviland companies. About 570 color photographs show the progression of patterns and style.
