In addition to reflecting my passion for travelling, a couple of themes emerged during the journey and writing of the book. Firstly, travel is quite a challenge for my wife, Sylvia, who has Parkinson's disease and who, as a disabled person, needs a wheelchair for getting around most of the time. This adds a whole new dimension to the practicability of travel, which my book addresses.A second theme, however, apparent almost from Day One of our travels, emerged and never really left us during our time in the Americas. This can briefly be encapsulated in a single word - freedom. We came across it when we saw the Statue of Liberty in New York and in talking to people in New York, and again in Philadelphia, with its links to the American War of Independence from the UK, where we walked in the footsteps of George Washington. In Latin America we were constantly reminded of their struggles for independence from Spain, both in Colombia and Argentina, where the two larger-than-life liberators, Simon Bolivar and José de San Martin, continue to wield an influence and presence that still seems to permeate life in both of these countries.Our story follows our travels and interactions with friends and strangers, from New York, across to Philadelphia and then down to Colombia and Argentina. Mike and Sylvia experienced many acts of kindness as well as great moments of discovery, as they travelled down the spine of the Americas, and our hope is that people, particularly with disabilities, will feel confident to step out of their comfort zones and explore a little more of what this wonderful world and its varied communities has to offer.

The year is 1995, a few years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. This has led to a whole new way of life in former Soviet satellite countries like Slovakia. Mike Fox was privileged to accompany a group of students, who went out from the UK into the country, to experience a changing culture, as Slovakia enthusiastically emerged into the ways of the western world. The UK students also enjoyed their new-found social contacts with their Slovak student counterparts, a process that was no doubt aided by liberal access to 'pivo', which is the Slovak word for beer, and which became an appropriate strap line for the tour. It turned out to be a never-to-be forgotten experience.

The story opens with tragedy on both sides of the world: in the USA, a US pilot by the name of Tyler is grief stricken by a tragic turn of events; in Iraq, Husna loses her husband and two young sons in a drone strike. Ironically, Tyler is a drone operator on Creech Airbase in Nevada, waking up with dreams of blood and gore as the psychological stresses of this 21st century killing mode takes its toll on his mental health. Husna, a beautiful woman, is on a mission of revenge: she sets off for the USA determined to kill as many Amerikanis as she can. She is chillingly clinical as she starts her killing spree in mainland America. At first, the police think they are searching for a serial killer. In a way, they are, but soon discover there is something extra about these gruesome murders. "She's a serial killer with attitude. She's also beautiful and dangerous. Fuelled by a consuming and bitter need for revenge she leaves Iraq for the USA. Her objective is simple: to kill as many Americans as she can!"
