  • - Everything You Need To Know To Preserve The Freshness Of Your Food While Extending Its Shelf Life
    av Melissa Hammock
    155,-

A big part of combating industrial agriculture is taking control of sourcing and preparing one's own food in as many ways as possible. While shopping at local farmers' markets shares is an excellent way to get fresh ingredients of high quality, fewer people nowadays are skilled at preserving that seasonal food for the historically 'scarce' months of the year. Preserving knowledge has largely disappeared in the past two generations, simply because we live in times of seeming abundance and can't be bothered with preserving foods that we could easily buy. It's a skill worth re-learning, however, as the food industry becomes increasingly questionable and less trustworthy. There are enough recalls and warnings issued by the FDA each year to make anyone concerned about buying food from supermarkets. Preserving food yourself ensures that you know exactly what's in it -- and what's not. There are various ways to preserve food (you can read about that here) but this post will look specifically at drying, an often-overlooked and very simple way to save food for future consumption. Drying is effective because it removes the moisture that bacteria need to reproduce. Without moisture, food is safe from spoilage because mold and bacteria cannot grow. Dried food can usually be stored at room temperature. This book gives the following suggestions for easy drying.

  • - A Guide To Pruning Trees And Shrubs
    av Melissa Hammock
    155,-

Proper pruning enhances the beauty of almost any landscape tree and shrub, while improper pruning can ruin or greatly reduce its landscape potential. In most cases, it is better not to prune than to do it incorrectly. In nature, plants go years with little or no pruning, but man can ruin what nature has created. By using improper pruning methods healthy plants are often weakened or deformed. In nature, every plant eventually is pruned in some manner. It may be a simple matter of low branches being shaded by higher ones resulting in the formation of a collar around the base of the branch restricting the flow of moisture and nutrients. Eventually the leaves wither and die and the branch then drops off in a high wind or storm. Often, tender new branches of small plants are broken off by wild animals in their quest for food. In the long run, a plant growing naturally assumes the shape that allows it to make the best use of light in a given location and climate. All one needs to do to appreciate a plant's ability to adapt itself to a location is to walk into a wilderness and see the beauty of natural growing plants. Pruning, like any other skill, requires knowing what you are doing to achieve success. The old idea that anyone with a chain saw or a pruning saw can be a landscape pruner is far from the truth. More trees are killed or ruined each year from improper pruning than by pests. Remember that pruning is the removal or reduction of certain plant parts that are not required, that are no longer effective, or that are of no use to the plant. It is done to supply additional energy for the development of flowers, fruits, and limbs that remain on the plant. Pruning, which has several definitions, essentially involves removing plant parts to improve the health, landscape effect, or value of the plant. Once the objectives are determined and a few basic principles understood, pruning primarily is a matter of common sense. The necessity for pruning can be reduced or eliminated by selecting the proper plant for the location. Plants that might grow too large for the site, are not entirely hardy, or become unsightly with age should be used wisely and kept to a minimum in the landscape plan. Advances in plant breeding and selection in the nursery industry provide a wide assortment of plants requiring little or no pruning. However, even the most suitable landscape plants often require some pruning. The guidelines presented in this publication should be helpful when pruning any plant.

  • - The Basics Beginner's Guide to Precision Rifle Shooting
    av Melissa Hammock
    155,-

The feeling you get when you can hit a tiny target, almost out of sight, is really amazing for many of us. Taking your skills to that level takes some time and training, but it's gratifying when you achieve that next step in your shooting skill set. One reason many shooters are moving up to longer ranges is the challenge. It's pretty easy to hunt or plink at the range and get good hits on target sub-200 yards, but as soon as you start to go longer then some skill is involved as is the need to do some basic math and use more tools. These complications mean that it's harder and more time consuming to shoot this way and that makes it appealing to those who want to go to the next level. Here we explain the basics of how to get started in Long Range Shooting.

  • - How to Tie the 20 Knots You Need to Know
    av Melissa Hammock
    155,-

Knot tying has always been one of those key outdoor skills that the inexperienced take for granted. The experienced outdoorsman, however, has had enough success and failure to know that there are right and wrong knots for certain jobs. But first, it helps to know a few strange terms. Put it simply, a knot is some kind of fastening or splice made by intertwining one or more ropes or some other flexible material. After tightening a knot, it should hold on its own. A hitch is a little bit different. It's like a knot, but it generally involves another object like a stick, a post, a ring, or occasionally another rope. Properly tied, hitches can hold their place, or they may be able to slide, depending on the hitch you choose. A lashing is like a hitch, but slightly more complex. Lashings involve the use of a rope or similar material to secure two or more objects together. To grossly oversimplify all this, the knot is just rope fastened together; the hitch is a rope fastened to an object; and a lashing is a rope fastening multiple objects together. Knowing how to tie knots is an important and useful skill, but some people get overwhelmed. There are many knots, far too many for the average person to remember them all. Fortunately, being able to tie a handful of knots is enough to see you through. Just TAP the BUY NOW icon to get FULL ACCESS to this information in this book and become a MASTER at knot tying
