With no family to help her, Teddy has no choice but to remain in Bird, South Dakota, and find a way to survive. The townspeople are rude, intrusive, and hostile to strangers. They harass Teddy as she struggles to emerge from depression and find a way to make ends meet. In a series of encounters with idiosyncratic residents, some intimidating and others comical, Teddy realizes that her wit and sense of humor are her best coping skills. However, an arson fire, mysterious break-ins, and death threats assail her.
