Lin is a survivor. That's all she seems to be able to do now: live while those around her die. Long gone are the days of her studying as an engineering student. Lucky enough to survive the initial plague that killed 85% of the world's population, she keeps away from others at all costs, fearing a band of survivors called the Sparrows. With only the supplies she can scavenge and carry, she searches for somewhere safe, and the sweet oblivion of sleep.That is, until she meets James. The stoic leader of a peaceful group of survivors, he risks his life to save her from the Sparrows. When James is wounded in the process, Lin must make the choice to save him, or continue on her lonely trek through the wastelands of humanity. She finds herself inexplicably drawn to him, but can she overcome her past and her reluctance to rejoin society?
The Caseroom follows the fortunes of Iza Ross as she joins the ranks as one of around 800 women who, for the first time, have been allowed to join Edinburgh's thriving print industry in the late 19th to early 20th century as typesetters: a male-dominated trade which stands resistant to changes in the industry.
